Ukraine launches its largest-ever drone attack on Moscow

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

🌐 Dominating the front pages this afternoon is Ukraine’s largest-ever drone attack on Moscow, which left two dead, at least six injured, and damaged a major Russian oil refinery earlier today. The attack comes as Russia enters the final day of parliamentary elections, with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin saying, “the unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of ​disrupting the elections.” The mayor claims 1.6k drones were intercepted, including 450 that were headed for the Russian capital. Meanwhile, Russia continues its drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, which Ukrainian authorities say have claimed eight lives on Saturday.

CLOSER TO HOME- Also making headlines this afternoon are claims by Yemen’s Houthis that they launched drone and ballistic missile attacks on Riyadh on Saturday, just hours after flames and a large plume of smoke were reported near the Saudi capital’s international airport, where some flights were disrupted on Saturday. Saudi Arabia issued overnight alerts warning of potential threats around Riyadh, marking the group’s first strike on the capital since the two sides began exchanging attacks in July. US embassies also sent security alerts for American nationals in the region. Houthis’ military spokesman Yahya Saree said the attacks targeted “sensitive sites” in the capital and Aramco facilities and were in response to Saudi attempts to target the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

IN OTHER NEWS- Voters in two German states are heading to the polls today as pressure mounts on Chancellor Friedrich Merz, particularly following the record result of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) earlier this month in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The AfD is seeking another strong result, with opinion polls showing the party ahead of Merz’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), while speculation has grown over a possible mid-term replacement if the CDU’s fortunes fail to improve.
