Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and happy almost-weekend. We’ve got a fun, light issue this afternoon. First up: we sat down with the three founders of Ash — Egyptian actor Asser Yassin, his brother Islam Yassin, and their partner Seif Shimy — who built a premium menswear brand after spotting a gap in the market.
Elsewhere in today’s issue: a memoir about fostering dogs in New York that Universal has already bought the rights to… and why dating in your 20s isn’t all that different from rescuing dogs, according to its author.
But first, the news…
THE BIG STORY ABROAD-
🌐 Still leading the charge on the digital front pages this afternoon are the latest updates from the UN General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York. In case you missed it, the past 24 hours saw US officials meet with Iranian envoys — the first direct meeting since June. Despite Trump threatening in his UN address that he would “annihilate” the Islamic Republic should no agreement be reached to end the war soon, he later told reporters it was a “very good meeting.” Naturally, Iran warned the US against any attacks.
What we’ll be keeping an eye on: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will be one of many world leaders addressing the UNGA today — in the early hours of Thursday, Cairo time. Pezeshkian will be followed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is reportedly ready for trilateral talks with Russia and the US to end the war in Ukraine.

ALSO- The US president and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are also getting plenty of ink ahead of their anticipated meeting tomorrow. The trip marks Xi’s first White House visit since 2015, and the agenda is set to include a trade truce nearing expiration, chip export controls, AI safety, China’s economic ties with Iran, and Taiwan. AI, in particular, seems to be the focal point, with reports of tech executives — including Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Apple’s Tim Cook, and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, among others — attending a state dinner on Thursday.

MEANWHILE- Following a boycott by major TV networks after CNN, Politico, and MS Now sued the administration for banning them from the White House, the US Justice Department said that media outlets can be shut out of the White House at the president’s discretion. This comes after a court filing from the Trump administration argued that access to the White House is a “privilege, not a right,” adding that Trump retains the right to control private areas of the White House to protect national security information.

We dive into what that means, how it works, and what’s in it for Egypt here;
- The National Bank of Egypt secured preliminary approval from the Central Bank of the UAE to acquire Banque Misr’s branches in the Emirates. The state-owned lenders say the move aims to integrate their overseas banking presence into a single operation under UAE rules;
- Egypt’s economy absorbed the Iran war better than almost anyone could have expected seven months ago, supported by a flexible exchange rate, swift policy responses, and comfortable international reserves. But persistent vulnerabilities, including high gross financing needs, heavy short-term debt, and a large state footprint, continue to pose medium-term risks, according to the IMF’s latest Egypt assessment;
- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is lending our friends at EFG Holding USD 40 mn to expand financing for MSMEs — its first direct facility to the parent company. The funds will flow through subsidiaries of EFG Holding’s NBFI platform, EFG Finance, and target businesses in rural areas outside major cities, where it’s hardest to access finance.
