Heliopolis’ Sammy’s makes smash burgers worth smashing your diet for

🍔 There are days when the 9-5 leaves you with a serious case of midweek blues, ones that we’ve found, over the years, may only be cured by a good ol’ burger. Heliopolis’ Sammy’s, we’ve also found, has just the right antidote.

So, what’s on the menu? Right off the bat, the menu is a breath of fresh air — your options are limited to six variations of their signature smash burger, alongside basic fries, cheese fries, loaded fries, and Sammy’s fries, which are loaded with an extra burger patty. For the burgers, highlights include Oklahoma onion, mushroom, and sweet chili variations, with the remaining three being more or less what you’d find as staples on any burger joint menu.

What we ordered (and liked): When in Rome, do what the Romans do. In this case, the Romans decided to indulge in an Oklahoma Smash, a Sammy’s Mushroom, and a plate of Sammy’s fries — naturally, a V7 Cola Diet had to enter the equation to ease digestion. The order landed on our doorstep 20 minutes later, and first impressions were positive: portions were generous, packaging was great, and the food was hot.

The standout? Most certainly the Oklahoma Smash. Though not as groundbreaking as our favorite Oklahoma Onion provider, Meat Party BBQ’s, the burger held its own and then some: the patty was well-seasoned and well-cooked, and the onions complemented without overpowering. The Mushroom Smash also gained our favor and earned a repeat order on a separate occasion. The Sammy’s fries, however, proved a little too much to handle — though perhaps we were already full by the time we got to them. Initially appetizing in theory, an entire patty on a plate of cheese, sauce, and pickle-loaded fries proved too much to handle, though it delivered on flavor as well.

The verdict: If you’ve decided that calories don’t exist and your diet could use a break, Sammy’s is definitely a solid option. You won’t be stuck on the menu for more than five minutes. Whatever you order will definitely deliver on one front or another, and you’ll be full for quite some time. A piece of advice: if you’re going for Sammy’s fries, you might not need anything else.
