THE BIG STORY ABROAD-
🌐 One story is still dominating the headlines this afternoon: the German elections. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now pushing to turn its historic election victory in Saxony-Anhalt into its first state government, appealing directly to lawmakers from Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservatives for support. The AfD received 44% of the vote, securing 39 of the state parliament’s 83 seats, but fell three short of the 42 needed for an outright majority.
The appeal puts pressure on Merz’s Christian Democratic Union, which slumped to just 17.2%, its worst showing in the state. Mainstream parties have traditionally maintained a “firewall” against working with the AfD, which Germany’s domestic intelligence services classify as right-wing extremist. The results have triggered concern in neighboring France and Poland and highlight growing discontent with Merz’s ruling coalition.
