THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Egypt, UAE will lay the foundation stone for Ras El Hekma project today

Good morning, friends, and a very happy Friday to you all. This long weekend is much needed after a busy week of news, and we hope you have some fun plans to fill it up with.

Enjoying the holiday at home? Maybe you should spend it planning an upgrade. This week’s Enterprise Guide is full of tech gadgets that will help you optimize and automate your living space. Welcome to the future.

Enterprise Weekend comes out each Friday at 9:00am CLT. We’ll be back on Monday at 6am with EnterpriseAM Egypt. Until then: Enjoy the weekend.

LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

REAL ESTATE-

#1- Construction work on the Ras El Hekma project will officially kick off today: Emirati sovereign wealth fund ADQ will lay the foundation stone for its USD multi-bn Ras El Hekma project today, Deputy Housing Minister for Technical Affairs Abdul Khaleq Ibrahim told Al Arabiya earlier this week. The first phase of the project — for which work has already unofficially begun — will take three years and cover 10k feddans, Ibrahim added.

#2- Construction licensing made easier: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has directed the government to scrap the construction licensing requirements put forward in 2021 and reinstating the full provisions of the 2008 Building Law and its executive regulations, according to a statement from the Housing Ministry. Permits can now be issued in a maximum of 44 days and minimum of 26 days.

ECONOMY-

#1 Egypt is set to secure USD 2.9 bn in financing to support the state budget and enhance structural reforms from a number of development partners, including the European Union, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, Japan, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and the French Development Agency, Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat told reporters on the sidelines of a press conference yesterday. The new funds are pending the necessary approvals, Al Mashat added.

#2- Egypt’s GDP growth slows in FY 2023-24: GDP growth came in at 2.4% in 4Q 2023-24, bringing the GDP growth rate for the full fiscal year to 2.4%, Al Mashat announced at the press conference. That’s compared to the 3.8% growth rate recorded during the previous fiscal year.

Driving the decline: The lower GDP growth rate came as geopolitical tension and volatility in the global economy put pressure on the Egyptian economy, particularly with “the government’s contractionary policies aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability — strengthening the governance of public investments being a key policy,” the minister said. Suez Canal activity dropped 30% y-o-y in FY 2023-24, with a “sharp 68% contraction recorded in the last quarter alone,” the minister added.

These drops were offset by growth in other sectors, including communications and information technology, tourism, wholesale and retail trade, transport and storage, and social services, including education and health.

#3- Business activity is back to contraction territory: Egypt’s non-oil private sector activity contracted in September, as higher cost inflation dampened sales and new orders during last month, the S&P Global’s Egypt Purchasing Managers (PMI) index shows (pdf). The September index reading came in at 48.4, down from 50.4 in August, which was the single month of expansion the country’s non-oil private sector had witnessed since November 2020.

#4- Has our fourth loan review with the IMF been pushed back again? The Fund is likely toconduct the fourth review of our USD 8 bn loan program in November, a government source told Enterprise. The review that will unlock a USD 1.3 bn tranche — the biggest among the four tranches to date — was initially scheduled for September, before being delayed to October.

The why: The government wants to wait so investment incentives and investment agreements currently in the works can be finalized and then taken into account for the review. In addition to this, the delayed third review has pushed back the timetable for subsequent reviews, our source told us.

#5- Egypt’s current account deficit saw a fourfold rise in FY 2023-24, recording USD 20.8 bn up from USD 4.7 bn during the previous fiscal year, driven by a significant increase in trade deficit and a decline in Suez Canal revenues. Despite the widening current account deficit, Egypt recorded an overall balance of payments surplus of USD 9.7 bn, which the bank said was driven by structural reforms that took place during the second half of the year, which resulted in a net inflow of some USD 29.9 bn.

INFRASTRUCTURE-

Intro Technology and Omani data center leader Oman Data Park will establish a new USD450 mn sustainable data center in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), under an MoU inked between the two. Spanning some 80k sqm, the center — dubbed the Kemet Data Centre — will be developed in two phases and will serve large companies looking for cost-effective and advanced cloud solutions, Internet of Things (IoT), and digital transformation.

MANUFACTURING-

Egypt could soon manufacture its own electrolyzers to power its green hydrogen ambitions: Norwegian renewables giant Scatec, Belgium’s John Cockerill, John Cockerill-Technip JV Rely, and France’s SLB have plans to set up a factory to manufacture electrolyzers for green hydrogen production in Ain Sokhna.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

The world’s attention was squarely fixed on our part of the world throughout last week, after Israel upped its offensive on Lebanon by battering the country with airstrikes and launched on-the-ground invasion of the country after assassinating Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah over the weekend.

As in Gaza, civilians and children have found themselves at the receiving end of attacks. More than a mn Lebanese civilians have fled their homes to seek safety in the north of the country and even in neighboring Syria, with the death toll over the last two weeks expected to have now reached around 1k.

Fears of regional escalation began to feel ever more real, with Iran launching a missileattack on Israel later in the week in retaliation for its invasion of Lebanon, which Israel vowed to respond to. The apartheid state also launched attacks on Yemen throughout the week.

While in an otherwise quiet week for business news, a bullish Chinese stock market caught many by surprise, with Chinese equities having their best day in 16 years on Monday, after “fevered trading” saw the country hitting CNY 1 tn-worth of shares traded in the shortest amount of time in its history. Chinese markets closed up 8% throughout the day, before closing for a weeklong national holiday until Tuesday.

The guide to living smarter

The tech world is advancing faster than we can keep up, with new gadgets flooding every sector. From phones to computers to AI, there’s tech to cater to every need.

Perhaps the most helpful and the most underutilized is domestic tech, designed and built to make living easier. From cleaning robots that facilitate everyday chores to gadgets built to optimize your life, here’s how to live better… and smarter.

#1- A switch-pusher can turn any device into a smart one. Can’t be bothered to get up to turn the lights on? Or power up the coffee machine? Have Google Home or Alexa push the button for you, or control it through an app on your phone. The best part is that you don’t need the rest of your home to be smart to make this work.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Amazon and Jumia carry brands like SwitchBot, UanTii, Meross, Philips, and Zigbee.

PRICE: The price tag ranges from EGP 2k up to EGP 4k.

#2- Breathe easier with an air purifier. An air purifier filters out dust, pollen, and other pollutants from your home to give you cleaner, healthier air. This will particularly increase the quality of life for anyone with allergies.

PRICE:You can find brands from Xiaomi to LG, ranging from a modest EGP 209 for a genericmodel, to EGP 66k for one from Dyson.

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO THIS WEEKEND?

Is evil real if you can’t see it?

? AT THE MOVIES-

A story that ropes our world against the evils of the world. Directed by French filmmaker Alexandre Aja, Never Let Go unfolds in a dark, dense, and creepy forest, with the eerie feeling of a post-apocalyptic world. A small family takes refuge in an old, gloomy cabin, trying to escape the lurking threat that haunts them.

June (Halle Berry) is a single mother living with her twin sons, Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV), in a house surrounded by an unseen Evil. To protect herself and her children from it, they must tie themselves to a long rope connected to the house whenever they venture into the forest to hunt for food. They must never let go of the rope, or the Evil will touch them.

Reality or fantasy? During one of their trips, Sam stumbles and loses his grip on the rope. In a panic, the mother rushes to save him and is confronted by the Evil, unseen to the boys. This event sparks questions and doubts in Nolan’s mind: Are they really in danger, or is it all just in his mother’s imagination? Nolan tries to escape his mother’s control, which leads to a conflict that pushes the story towards a more violent turn.

The film is a gripping story that hinges on uncertainty, keeping viewers constantly guessing until the very end. Some reviews consider the ending the weakest part of the film, though it naturally ties together a puzzle that was never going to be given up easily.

Best performance goes to… Halle Berry delivers an excellent performance, making her character easy to sympathize with even when doubts cloud our minds too. However, who really surprised us were the young actors, Anthony Jenkins and Percy Daggs IV, in extraordinary scenes that foreshadowed their future promising talents.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can find the film at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Almaza and Mall of Egypt, City Stars Cinema, Cairo Festival City,Point 90 Cinema, and Cima Arkan. Watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:23).

? FROM THE BOOKSTORE-

Nicola Yoon's debut follows a utopian all-Black suburb called Liberty, where the promise of safety and comfort masks a creeping secret and agenda. One of Our Kind unpacks what it means to seek refuge as a Black family in a world where systemic racism never seems far enough away.

The plot: Jasmyn and Kingston Williams, along with their son Kamau, move to Liberty after an issue at a traffic stop leaves them wanting a place where they can feel safe. Liberty promises just that — a peaceful, all-Black utopia complete with wide streets, elegant homes, and a wellness spa that seems to bring in many residents.

At first, the community seems perfect, but Jasmyn’s suspicions quickly grow. Her Black Power t-shirts, attempts at protest and engaging the town in social justice causes are met with apathy. Jasmyn begins to realize that the spa’s treatments seem to strip away not just their stress but also their connection to their Black identity. That's when all the unsettling truth about Liberty starts to unravel.

You can find One of Our Kind at Cherry Blossom Books.

? HOT AND FRESH OUT OF THE KITCHEN-

Esca Cueva provides a luxury dining experience with an interior that transports you to a serene desert oasis. The stone-clad entrance of Esca Cueva — in the heart of New Giza — is an homage to the region’s stunning dunes and rocks. The beautifully curated space feels both welcoming and enchanting, and if you have the chance to dine outside, the breathtaking landscape of New Giza makes for an incredible backdrop.

But let’s get to the food. The perfectly fried veal schnitzel cutlet was crispy on the outside and tender inside, complemented by a side of crispy potato wedges. A schnitzel is a schnitzel, you might think. But the hot berry sauce was an addition we hadn’t experienced anywhere else, and added a sweet element that elevated the dish.

But the real star of the meal was the truffle rigatoni and cheese pasta. The rigatoni in this must-try dish was cooked in a way that would make the Italians proud, and bathed in a rich truffle cream sauce topped with smoky cheese and a sprinkle of Parmesan.

The sweet conclusion to our meal was the creamy tiramisu. But for this one, we’ll concede that a tiramisu is sometimes just a tiramisu.

? Per person: EGP 1k.

? Outdoor seating: Yes.

? Alcohol: Yes.

? Accessibility friendly: Yes.

WHAT TO LISTEN TO

Why attend a book club when you can listen to it?

The podcast world has brought that weekly book club to you. Joel Golby’s Book Club podcast is simple: Each week, host Joel Golby recommends a new book. That’s it. He spends the beginning of the 30 minute episode chit-chatting (as you would at a real-life book club) before discussing the book in detail.

He breaks down books that might seem a bit lofty or complex, sharing his thoughts in a way that is engaging and relatable. Even if you haven’t read the books he’s discussing, you’ll find yourself interested enough to consider picking them up.

In one episode, Golby breaks two of his own rules by reading a hardback that was published the same year: Miranda July’s All Fours follows the story of a narrator who plans to spend a lot of money on a life-changing road trip, but ends up blowing all the cash on renovating a motel room to look like a Parisian hotel suite. Golby’s review of the book is insightful as he shares his own personal connection to the story.
