WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

ECA files criminal cases against 21 major table egg producers

Good afternoon, friends, it’s only Monday, but it already looks like a busy week on the business front.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

#1- ECA cracks down on egg cartel: The Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA) has initiated criminal proceedings against 21 major table egg producers for colluding to fix prices, according to a statement by the authority. The producers — who are members of the Table Egg Division of the Poultry Producers Union and its board — were referred to the Public Prosecution for violating provisions of the Competition Act.

The cartel controls over two-thirds of the market: The producers represent about 70% of the market, local media outlets quote ECA Head Mahmoud Momtaz as saying.

#2- OCI sells methanol business to Methanex for USD 2.05 bn: Nassif Sawiris-backed chemicals company OCI Global has sold its entire methanol business — operating in the US and Europe — to Canadian methanol producer Methanex in a USD 2.05 bn transaction, according to a press release (pdf). The purchase is set to be completed in 1H 2025, pending regulatory and shareholder approvals. The Dutch-based OCI Methanol is a major distributor of and producer of green methanol through OCI Hyfuels, with potential for renewable natural gas trading as well.

Methanex is no stranger to Egypt: Methanex Egypt was the first to operate a methanol production facility in Egypt in 2011, with a capacity of 1.3 mn tons of methanol per year. Methanex officials discussed with Oil Minister Karim Badawi opportunities to locally produce green methanol. Methanex Egypt is 50% owned by Methanex Corp, while Egyptian state institutions hold 33% and Saudi-based Apicorp owns the remaining 17%.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Italy’s ex-PM is urging the EU to consider radical reforms that will require EUR 800 bn to implement… per year. Former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, originally an economist and the former president of the European Central Bank, believes that the European Union needs an annual addition of EUR 750-800 bn in investments to uphold its geopolitical relevance and hit its climate targets.

Presenting a wide-range study, Draghi warned the EU that “dependencies are becoming vulnerabilities.” Around 20% of the EU’s imports originate from countries with whom the bloc is not “strategically aligned,” and an additional 20% are difficult to replace. He urges that the EU secure the supply chain of key technologies by creating industrial partnerships while stockpiling in critical areas. Draghi also hopes that the EU will reduce trade friction by finally and fully implementing the single market and making the European Securities and Markets Authority the singular regulator for all EU securities markets. • New tax incentives are set to be announced within the coming days, Cabinet Spokesperson Mohamed El Homsani said, adding that the incentives are designed to “protect investors’ rights and support them as they grow and expand their investment, production, and development activities.”
  • ACWA Power to complete first phase of its SCZone green hydrogen project in 4Q 2028: The Saudi renewable energy developer intends to complete the USD 4 bn project, which will have a production capacity of 600k metric tons of green ammonia annually, by the end of 2028. The second phase of the project will add another 2 mn tons to the plant’s production capacity.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

What to expect from Apple’s It’s Glowtime event

Apple’s latest reveal is set for tonight — here’s what we expect to see. The iPhone 16 will be making its debut tonight at 8pm in Om El Donia, streaming on the Apple website as well as the Apple TV app. The phones will be native to Apple Intelligence, but integration into older models is expected to roll out with iOS 18 (and other OS’s across the board). Or was expected, anyway.

You might have to wait a little longer for Apple Intelligence if you’re not buying the iPhone 16. iOS 18 was released for beta testing back in July with a slew of new features, and it seems that there were a few more kinks to work out than expected, delaying the launch of Apple Intelligence. Bloomberg reported that “the full set of Apple Intelligence features [will release] via multiple updates to iOS 18 across the end of 2024 and through the first half of 2025.”

Optimists will say the delay is intentional. Some analysts believe that gradual integration serves the goal to unobtrusively weave Apple Intelligence into iPhone software for a cushioned user experience — not a farfetched concept, since Apple’s dedication to UX and history of seamless integration is unmatched. This will also (whether deliberately or not) give developers the chance to build AI-driven apps or make their apps AI-compatible.

Skeptics will say that all that matters is its effect on the bottom line — and it’s not looking great. The Apple Intelligence demonstration last month already had investors feeling uneasy. Instead of grand promises of a GenAI-driven future, Apple focused on practical applications of the tech to improve already existing experiences. AI integration instead of an AI takeover may have been underwhelming for tech-loving bigwigs, and delaying those plans when the stakes were higher than usual may see a hit in Apple’s stock price.

We’ll be missing out on the most anticipated feature of Apple Intelligence. The biggest change to Siri since the digital assisstant’s launch, heralded by the tech giant as “ the start of a new era,” will be held back until later releases of iOS 18. With AI integration, we were expecting to see Siri use on-device data to field queries and execute tasks with what Apple calls Siri’s “awareness” of you within your device’s context, as well as your phone’s information.

What to be excited about: iPhone 16 will be seeing major hardware upgrades, starting with its new chip. The A18 and A18 Pro chips developed for Apple Intelligence will also make your device work faster. Better yet, your battery will last longer, hopefully alleviating the #1 gripe from Apple customers. The camera is also seeing significant changes with a 48-megapixel camera — which means better focus and better zoom capabilities — and a reported ultra-wide lens, accompanied by a new capture button for easier pics. Larger displays are also on the docket, but that’s a personal preference.

Expect the phone in your hand by the end of the month. Fellow iSheep with their trigger fingers on the Add to Cart button — and maybe a good friend abroad — will be able to get their hands on their new device soon, as they are expected to ship by 20 September. Analysts don’t expect it to be any harder on your bank account than previous models.

The brutal world of a KPOP trainee

? ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

KPOP is not what it seems. Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE exposes the brutal world of the KPOP trainee life. Katseye is a “global girl group” formed by a Korean reality TV show, Dream Academy, a collaboration between American record label Geffen Records, behind pop artists like Olivia Rodrigo, and Korean HYBE, the label behind global sensation BTS.

After months of grueling training, ten girls stood on stage to be introduced to the world, but only six had their names called. Over eight episodes, Netflix’s latest docuseries uncovers the intense vocal, dance, and media training these girls went through, as well as the intense mental pressure they endured to earn their place in the group.

The KPOP trainee system is a high-pressure, 18-month program that focuses on extreme physical and mental conditioning. The docuseries follows the girls’ journeys away from home, the sacrifices they make along the way, and their efforts to compete in an unforgiving environment where only few make it to the top. The tension accumulates, especially when their futures start depending on fan votes.

But Dream Academy isn’t just about creating pop stars. There's a broader look at the massive decision-making machines behind the scenes — HYBE and Geffen — and how these processes impact young lives, and reminding viewers of the immense cost of pursuing stardom.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the docu series on Netflix or watch the trailer here (runtime: 1:18).

⚽The second round of the CAF qualifiers is still underway, kicking off yesterday with just one match that ended with a Tunisian victory at Gambia’s expense by two goals to one. Today’s matches worth keeping an eye on:

  • Burundi vs. Senegal — Group L (4pm).
  • Niger vs. Ghana — Group F (6pm).
  • Lesotho vs. Morocco — Group B (9pm).
  • Angola vs. Sudan — Group F (10pm).

The UEFA Nations League will be tracking seven matches tonight as part of its second round. The most notable match is taking place between France and Belgium at 9:45pm as part of League A, Group A2. Turkey and Iceland from League B, Group B4 will be going head to head at 9:45pm, as will Norway and Austria.

?EAT THIS TONIGHT-

Have you ever thought about having French-style rotisserie chicken? You should. Coquette brings France’s perfectly juicy poulet rôti all the way to Cairo, boasting perfectly browned skin and incredibly tender meat.

Personalize your Coquette experience: Whether you order one thigh, a half chicken, or the whole bird, your choice of sides are unrestricted. Classical eaters can order the house hand-cut fries, the Coquette spiced rice, or the creamed spinach, and the health-conscious can opt for a generous serving of grilled vegetables. Fans of the Levantine chicken experience can order a side of tortilla instead. Mashed potatoes are also an option, but we wouldn’t order it without a side of gravy to mix in for some needed flavor.

You can find more items on their menu, like wings, strips, salads, and the odd sandwich or two, but if you go to Coquette and come out without the chicken, you’ve missed the point, and missed out on their best offering. We would suggest that you order accompaniments for your chicken rather than alternatives.

WHERE TO GET IT- You can have Coquette delivered straight to your door through Talabat if you live in Maadi, or you can hop over to their restaurant for maximum freshness.
