Love and social constraints collide in rural England: In her new film Sense and Sensibility, British director Georgia Oakley revisits Jane Austen’s classic and puts the bond between sisters Elinor and Marianne at the heart of the story. Oakley works through the small details of daily life in the English countryside to show how tradition and money can shrink women’s options. The result? A grounded take that has little in common with the polished, idealized look period films usually go for.
The plot: Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles), and their mother lose their home and their financial security when the girls’ father dies, and the estate passes to their half-brother and his wife. The family then moves into a modest cottage in rural Devonshire. Level-headed Elinor tries to hide her feelings for Edward Ferrars (George MacKay), while Marianne falls hard for the fickle young Willoughby (Frank Dillane). Romances stall and hopes fade, and the sisters cross paths with Colonel Brandon (Herbert Nordrum) and the nosy Mrs. Jennings (Fiona Shaw). Through all the love and heartbreak, the bond between two very different sisters holds strong.
What we liked: Diana Reid’s screenplay is at its best in the small details that show how money and social standing decide the characters’ fates, without stopping for a history lesson on the way. Visually, the film skips the glossy finish typical of period dramas in favor of natural light and earthy tones. The landscape mirrors what the characters are feeling, with fields and muddy roads tracking the sisters’ mood shifts. The plain costumes also make the sisters’ world feel lived-in and unforced, a long way from the stiff, museum-piece sets of the genre.
Our verdict: This version of the Jane Austen classic stands out for how it shows two very different sisters dealing with loss and heartbreak as they look for security and stability. Oakley strips away the excess romantic gloss and gets closer to what life was like for women of the era, where passion keeps running into financial limitations, and the sisters become each other’s rocks through the storm. The film stays true to Austen’s spirit and gives her story real intimacy while keeping it grounded.
