🎥 Have you ever wondered why certain horror franchises manage to stick around for decades? That is precisely the question Insidious: Out of the Further attempts to answer. Serving as the sixth installment in the long-running franchise, the film aims for a fresh start with a new family confronting the terrors of the underworld, delivering a dose of dread that calls back to the iconic universe launched 16 years ago.
The plot: Gemma (Amelia Eve) is a young mother raising her daughter Maya (Island Austin) in the very same house weighed down by memories of her own troubled childhood. Gemma discovers her ability to cross over into The Further — the realm of lost souls that has anchored the franchise since its inception. Her ordeal goes beyond simply reaching that bleak dimension; it escalates when she realizes she can drag its horrifying inhabitants back into her reality, shattering the barrier between realms once the demons catch on to her powers.
What we liked: The film delivers on its core promise to genuinely terrify audiences, with several sequences pulling off jumpscares in fresh, creative ways — if you already dread visits to the dentist, this film will certainly amplify that fear. The technical elements, including makeup, costume design, and score, are all well executed. On the performance front, Eve and Austin shine, grounding the narrative with a convincing, nuanced portrayal of a mother-daughter bond. Additionally, the return of psychic Elise (the brilliant Lin Shaye) as a spirit trapped within The Further offers a welcome nod to the franchise’s roots.
Great scares, but how is the story? The film stumbles by overcomplicating a simple premise that previously worked well across earlier installments, bogging the narrative down in endless details that leave events feeling disjointed. It lays the groundwork for emotional depth around intergenerational trauma and complex mother-child dynamics, only to abandon those themes later without a satisfying resolution. While Jacob Chase takes over the directorial reins — following the evolution of the series from James Wan to Patrick Wilson — this chapter manages, if cautiously, to recapture the spine-chilling atmosphere that put the original films on the horror map a decade ago.
Our verdict: If you’re looking for an enjoyable, high-adrenaline horror ride without worrying too much about plot depth, this installment gets the job done. It delivers inventive scares that make it easy to overlook its core narrative flaws for a fun, thrilling night out with friends. However, be warned: The film isn’t for the faint of heart, packing plenty of gore and jump scares.
