Al Ahly face Barcelona in a historic first at Camp Nou

⚽ Tonight’s standout fixture needs no introduction for an Egyptian audience. Al Ahly and Barcelona go head-to-head at the Spotify Camp Nou stadium at 9pm Cairo time in the Joan Gamper Trophy — Barcelona’s annual pre-season showcase, held this year on the occasion of Camp Nou’s first fixture since its reopening.

Al Ahly are the first Egyptian — and African — club to be invited to the Gamper Trophy. The two clubs have met before: Barcelona beat Al Ahly 4-0 in Cairo all the way back in 2007, and 4-1 in 2009. While this is a friendly with no real stakes, it’ll be one we’ll be watching on the edge of our seats.

Two more matches on the roster tonight: La Liga’s 2026/27 season continues with Atlético Madrid hosting Málaga at 10pm. It’s a significant occasion for the visitors, who return to the top flight after an eight-year absence and could hardly have drawn a more daunting opener.

Also at 10pm, Celtic host LASK in the first leg of their Champions League play-off at Celtic Park in Glasgow — the victors booking a place in the Champions League league phase, the losers dropping to the Europa League.

AND- Keep an eye out for the Egyptian in Celtic’s ranks: Haissem Hassan — the first Egyptian player ever to sign for Celtic — completed his GBP 9 mn move from Real Oviedo last week and may be on the pitch. A sizable portion of Hassan’s add-on fees are triggered by Celtic reaching the Champions League league phase, making tonight’s result directly relevant to his own financial future at the club.
