Prime Video’s The Sheep Detectives is a whodunit that’s anything but sheepish

🐑📽️ Talking sheep solving a murder mystery definitely sounds like the setup for a somewhat cliché film. Instead, Prime Video’s The Sheep Detectives pulls off something far more impressive: a cozy, surprisingly poignant whodunit that uses a flock of woolly amateur sleuths to explore grief, herd mentality, and the courage to forge your own path. Equal parts mystery, comedy, and heartfelt drama, it’s the kind of film that sneaks up on you — starting as an offbeat detective story before revealing there’s a lot more going on beneath all that fleece.

The plot: Based on Leonie Swann’s bestselling novel, The Sheep Detectives follows a flock of unusually observant sheep whose peaceful lives are upended when their beloved shepherd, George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), is found dead under suspicious circumstances. Having spent years listening to George read detective novels, the sheep decide to investigate the case themselves, determined to uncover the truth before the humans do. As the mystery unfolds, the flock stumbles into a web of hidden motives, long-buried secrets, and unexpected revelations that prove no one in the quiet countryside is quite as innocent as they seem.

What we liked: The film’s greatest strength is how effortlessly it balances whimsy with emotional depth. Yes, watching sheep investigate suspects and piece together clues is every bit as charming as it sounds, but the mystery itself is engaging. Rather than relying on shock value or graphic violence, the film embraces the classic formula, but delivers a twist that feels earned without dragging the investigation out longer than necessary.

More unexpectedly, the film has quite a bit to say. Through the sheep’s perspective, it explores the dangers of herd mentality, the loneliness of being labelled an outsider, and the importance of questioning what everyone else accepts as truth. Its portrayal of grief is particularly touching, suggesting that healing doesn’t come from forgetting those we’ve lost, but from keeping their memories alive. They’re surprisingly weighty ideas for what’s ostensibly a family-friendly mystery, yet they never feel forced or overly sentimental.

Visually, the film is equally understated. Gorgeous countryside cinematography, soft natural lighting, and a restrained score create a warm, comforting atmosphere, while the voice cast — including Chris O’Dowd, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Patrick Stewart — brings personality to every member of the flock.

The downside: The mystery isn’t entirely flawless. Certain character motivations and bits of backstory feel underdeveloped, particularly surrounding some of the human characters whose connections to the case could have benefited from further exploration. Likewise, Hugh Jackman’s George disappears from the narrative fairly early on, and while that’s inevitable given the premise, a few more flashbacks would’ve strengthened the emotional core and deepened our understanding of his relationships.

Our verdict: The Sheep Detectives is one of those rare family films that refuses to talk down to its audience. It’s clever without being smug, heartfelt without becoming saccharine, and mysterious enough to keep seasoned whodunit fans guessing until the very end. Whether you come for the novelty of detective sheep or stay for its thoughtful exploration of loss, belonging, and bravery, this is a cozy, quietly brilliant mystery that’s worth the watch.
