Apple TV’s Lucky: A tightly wound thriller led by Anya Taylor-Joy

Three episodes in, Lucky is already one of the more compelling things on any streaming platform right now

📺 Anything Anya Taylor-Joy touches turns to gold — and Apple TV’s Lucky is no different. The limited series dropped earlier this month to virtually no fanfare, which seems to be Apple TV’s signature move at this point: quietly release something exceptional and let the algorithm sort it out. We’re not gatekeeping, though — you’re welcome.

The plot: Lucky Armstrong (Taylor-Joy) is days away from leaving her criminal past behind when, naturally, everything unravels. Dragged back into an operation far bigger than she anticipated, she finds herself hunted by both the FBI and a mafia boss — and running for her life. The catch: Lucky doesn’t rattle easily. As long as she’s in control, she’s fine. The question the show keeps asking is how long that lasts.

What we liked: Taylor-Joy is the obvious draw, and she delivers — natural, eerie, and layered in a role that keeps you genuinely unsure whether you’re watching someone sweet or someone ruthless. Often both at once. The supporting cast more than holds its own: Annette Bening as Priscilla, a crime leader and Lucky’s mother-in-law, is a highlight; Timothy Olyphant plays Lucky’s father; and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is sharp as Agent Rand, the lead investigator on her trail. The pacing is tight, the dual timelines never jarring, and the characters are fully formed from the first episode. The cinematography, too, is excellent.

The verdict: Three episodes in, Lucky is already one of the more compelling things on any streaming platform right now. A thrilling chase series with considerably more going on beneath the surface than its premise suggests. If you want a show that demands your full attention and rewards it — this is it.
