Prime Video’s Elle makes a strong case for a Legally Blonde prequel

Bend, snap, and binge the Legally Blonde prequel that brings early-2000s nostalgia (and a whole lot of pink) back to our screens

💄✨ Remember when Legally Blonde taught us not to judge a blonde by her pink wardrobe? Prime Video’s Elle proves that lesson still holds. A prequel to the beloved 2001 film, the eight-episode series rewinds the clock to Elle’s high school years, exploring the friendships, romances, and formative moments that shaped the future Harvard Law icon. It’s a nostalgic trip that knows exactly who it’s made for. While it doesn’t exactly reinvent the franchise, it delivers enough charm — and one perfect lead performance — to make for an easy weekend binge.

The plot: Set six years before Legally Blonde, Elle follows teenage Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree) as she navigates a major move from LA to Seattle, high school politics, first love, and the everyday drama that comes with growing up. Along the way, the series peppers in plenty of nods to the original film, from future lawyer-worthy debates to the origin story of Bruiser, the Chihuahua who would later become as iconic as Elle herself.

What we liked: The show’s greatest achievement is, without question, Lexi Minetree’s performance. Casting a younger version of one of pop culture’s most recognizable characters was always going to be risky, but Minetree absolutely sticks the landing. Handpicked by Reese Witherspoon herself, Minetree doesn’t impersonate Witherspoon’s Elle so much as embody the same infectious optimism and quick wit that made audiences fall in love with her more than two decades ago. The resemblance certainly helps, but it’s her performance that sells it.

The nostalgia hits all the right notes. Familiar tracks from the original film’s soundtrack, clever Easter eggs, and subtle hints about Elle’s future career make the series feel like a genuine love letter to longtime fans instead of a hollow reboot. The costume department deserves its flowers too for making every outfit unapologetically pink, polished, and perfectly Elle.

The downside: For all its charm, Elle rarely strays from the well-worn YA playbook. Love triangles, convenient character arcs, and predictable high school tropes make parts of the story feel more formulaic than fresh. Some supporting characters exist purely to move the plot forward before fading into the background, while a handful of promising storylines — particularly those involving Elle’s family — never quite pay off.

The verdict: Elle isn’t the groundbreaking prequel nobody knew they needed, but it is a genuinely enjoyable one. It understands the assignment, celebrates what made Legally Blonde so beloved, and introduces a lead who feels worthy of carrying the pink baton forward. If you’re looking for prestige television, this isn’t it. But if you’re after a light, nostalgic binge with plenty of heart, Elle is well worth adding to your watchlist.
