The apps every traveler should download before they leave — domestic or international

🗺️ Summer travel is equal parts anticipation and admin. You’ve earmarked the dates, negotiated the time off, and mapped out roughly where you want to go — but between booking flights, coordinating accommodation, staying connected, and not getting catastrophically lost in an unfamiliar city, the logistics can quietly eat into the experience itself.

The good news? Your phone, loaded with the right apps, can handle most of it for you. In today’s edition of The Enterprise Guide, we’re listing all the apps you should keep handy before hitting the road — whether you’re exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations in Om El Donia or catching a flight out of Cairo. Some of these you’ll already have, so consider this a reminder to make sure they’re actually on your phone and that you put them to use.

The basics for when you’re planning

If you have nothing else, have these. Google Maps for navigation — download your destination offline before you go so it works without data. Uber for getting around, both domestically and in most international cities. Booking.com and Airbnb for accommodation — Booking for hotels and last-minute changes, Airbnb if you want a full apartment, especially useful for longer stays or group travel. Google Flights or Skyscanner for finding and comparing airfares; Google Flights ’ calendar view is particularly useful for identifying the cheapest travel dates if you have any flexibility.

💡 PRO TIP- Booking usually offers cheaper packages than direct reservations, and the more you use it, the less stays cost.

AND- If you don’t want to go through the hassle of pre-downloading maps on Google, check out Maps.Me, which is a full offline navigation app that works with zero data. It’s more reliable than Google Maps once you’re off the main tourist corridors — useful in Sinai, Upper Egypt, or anywhere signal is patchy abroad.

Traveling solo? Here’s how to stay connected

#1- Bumble BFF: Bumble’s friendship mode strips out the dating element and applies the same swipe-to-match mechanics to finding people to hang out with. Useful if you’re spending more than a few days in one city and want to meet locals or fellow travelers without the awkwardness of cold approaches.

#2- Couchsurfing: Originally a platform for finding pro bono accommodation with locals, Couchsurfing is now used primarily for its social features. The Hangouts function shows who’s nearby and available to meet for coffee or sightseeing. The community skews toward open, internationally-minded locals and travellers who genuinely want to connect. Paid membership is required.

#3- Time Left: Don’t want to grab dinner alone? Time Left matches small groups of strangers for dinners, runs, and coffee meetups based on personality rather than profiles — no swiping, just show up. Active in 160+ cities across 52 countries.

💡 Timeleft would only be of use for international travel, as the service discontinued operations in Egypt early this year.

#4- Raya: For exclusive social treatment, try Raya. The most selective app on this list — and the one most worth having if you can get in. Raya is a members-only community for creatives, executives, and frequent travellers, with an acceptance process that reviews your professional background, social media presence, and referrals from existing members. Once inside, the Social Mode feature shows a map of other members at nearby bars, restaurants, and hotspots — making it genuinely useful for connecting on the road rather than just in your home city.

Planning your time

#1- GetYourGuide: Book tours, day trips, and experiences in most destinations worldwide, including Egypt. Useful for everything from a Pyramids tour to a cooking class in a city you’re visiting for 48 hours. Prices are broadly comparable to booking direct, with the benefit of verified reviews and easy cancellation.

#2- TripIt: Upload any confirmed bookings to TripIt, and the app automatically builds a master itinerary — flights, hotels, car rentals, all in one place. Saves the scramble of digging through your inbox when you need a confirmation number at check-in.

#3- Wanderlog: Simplifies the travel process by creating a digital itinerary. Users can create day-by-day schedules, discover attractions and restaurants, map out routes, and track expenses, making it easy to plan and manage every part of their journey.

¿Tú hablas español?

Between Google Translate and Duolingo, your language needs before and during a trip are covered. Use Duolingo in the weeks ahead — 15 minutes a day builds enough baseline vocabulary to navigate basic interactions without feeling completely at sea. Once you’re on the ground, Google Translate handles everything in real time: type, speak, or point your camera at a menu or street sign and it translates instantly. Download your destination’s language pack before you leave so both apps work offline.

A few tips worth knowing: If you have AirPods, turn on Live Listen — combined with the Translate app on your iPhone, it effectively functions as a real-time interpreter during face-to-face conversations, with the translation appearing on your screen as the other person speaks. And if you’re somewhere with a reliable signal, Google Lens (built into the Google app) is faster than Translate’s camera mode for reading menus and signs — point, tap, done.

Need signal? Airalo is an eSIM marketplace that lets you buy and install a local data plan for your destination before you leave, without needing a physical SIM card. You land already connected — no hunting for a kiosk, no registration queue, no roaming charges. Check that your phone supports eSIM before purchasing.

Get the long end of the stick

Top-ranked on the App Store in Om El Donia, XE Currency is one of the more reliable real-time exchange rate converters available. It works offline once you’ve loaded it, making it essential for cashbased transactions in markets, souks, and anywhere you're negotiating a price and need a fast reference point. You can download the app on the App Store and Google Play.

Want to bag a bargain before packing up? Check out Waffarha and Xclusives — both apps often offer marked-down rates on select hotels and activities — mostly domestically.

ONE LAST THING- Make sure all your papers are in order… in one place. You can use your file manager of choice, or download Adobe Acrobat to keep track of all your digital documents — passport, visa, travel ins., and any other critical paperwork.
