On The Rocks captures a father-daughter relationship that’s, well, on the rocks. Directed by Sofia Coppola, the plot follows Laura (Rashida Jones) and her playboy father Felix (Bill Murray) who reconnect when Laura suspects that her husband is cheating on her. Knowing a thing or two about that, Felix eggs on the speculation and the two of them pair up to get to the bottom of it.

Coming of age while chasing a cheater: Their journey ends up being an exploration of family ties, growing up, and the nuances of marriage. Laura discovers that she might have more to learn from Felix than she thought amidst the chaos of their manhunt. She might even start to understand him and his failed marriage with her mom better now that she’s seeing how hard married life can be.

Coppola x Murray: The pair team up again — and while this movie does not come close to the masterpiece that is Lost in Translation — it’s a fun watch. The best part of the film is how well-rounded the characters are. They each have fully developed personalities, are funny, and maintain relatability even though the plot might be a satirical take on romcoms. It can be slow at times considering it is a comedy, but the emotional aspect will keep you hooked. It’s a feel-good movie overall.
