Meet Cute takes an unorthodox approach to time travel: Starring Pete Davidson as Gary and Kaley Cuoco as Sheila, Meet Cute is a dark romantic comedy film with sci-fi elements and a slightly deeper undertone as it touches on themes of trauma and depression. The story begins with Gary and Sheila on a pleasant — albeit demure — first date, which Sheila soon confesses is actually the seventh time she has experienced that first date. After their (actual first) first date, Sheila had a good enough time, and was at a low enough point mentally and emotionally, that she used a time travel machine to go back and relive that same day as she chased that rush of happiness. The film challenges the notion of wanting to go back in time to “fix” certain details, as well as the idea that constantly reliving a happy moment can be eternally fulfilling.
