Could the controversial NGO Act be watered down? A number of statements from members of the House of Representatives imply that the NGO Act, which has been criticized by US Congressional leaders including John McCain, could be watered down. The message was carried by House Speaker Ali Abdel Aal himself during visit by a House delegation last week to Washington, DC, to address concerns there over Egypt’s human rights record. House Social Solidarity Committee chair Abdel Hady El Kassaby tells Al Shorouk, that despite what Abdel Aal said, no articles which impact national security would be amended. Deputy chair Mohamed Abu Hamed made sure to point out that Abdel Aal’s statement does not constitute an outright promise.
