WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Qatar to finalize USD multi-bn North Coast project within days

Good afternoon, folks. The news cycle is still only warming up with not much on the horizon, though we’ve received some troubling news concerning the interwebs.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

?Qatar will ink its long-awaited, big ticket North Coast project “in the coming days,” according to a cabinet statement detailing Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly’s visit to the Gulf nation, which included a meeting with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani earlier today.

Déjà vu? This isn’t the first time we’ve been told to expect the project to soon be formally unveiled, but it looks like it will happen this time, with the announcement following an agreement between the two prime ministers to activate Qatar’s multi-bn direct investment package.

REMEMBER- The project is part of a wider USD 7.5 bn direct investment package from the Gulf nation, which was first announced during President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s visit to Qatar in April. Reports later suggested that Qatar was in advanced talks to develop a North Coast tourism project, with expectations of an agreement by year-end.

The Samla and Alam El Roum area of Matrouh was named the location of the project, confirming earlier unconfirmed reports. The cost and details of the project are still not yet out, but the Ras El Hekma-esque project will reportedly cost USD 4 bn and feature both residential areas and tourist accommodation, along with commercial and entertainment centers, a yacht marina, and advanced service facilities.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

? It’s an unusually calm afternoon in the global press, but among the headlines is the Trump administration, set to face the Supreme Court on Wednesday over US President Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs. Some 40 legal briefs have been filed in opposition to the duties by lawmakers, former officials, and business owners urging the court to rule against the tariffs.

While a decision isn’t expected immediately following Wednesday’s hearing, the administration remains optimistic that the Supreme Court will uphold the tariffs. "You should assume that they're here to stay," said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Trump will be skipping the hearing, stating that he doesn’t “want to do anything to deflect the importance of that decision.” (Reuters | Financial Times | New York Times | Politico | BBC | CBC)

CLOSER TO HOME- Israel has received the bodies of three deceased hostages yesterday after Hamas recovered their remains from a tunnel in southern Gaza. With this return, 20 of the 28 hostages have now been handed over to Israel, leaving eight bodies still in Gaza.

Hamas has stated that the remaining hostages are buried under the rubble, and excavation efforts will take considerable time. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement earlier today, saying that the occupation “will spare no effort” until the return of all of the Israeli hostages. Even after the October exchanges which saw some 2k Palestinian hostages released, 9.1k Palestinians continue to be held in Israeli prisons, with 3.5k held without charge or trial, and an additional 400 children in pre-trial detention. (NPR | Mondoweiss)

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- We’re in for some sunshine in the capital tomorrow after an overcast few days, with temperatures set to peak at 33°C before cooling down to 23°C, according to our favorite weather app.

MENA DDoS attacks surge in 2025

? The MENA region saw a dramatic 236% y-o-y rise in DDoS attacks during 2Q 2025, setting an all-time record for the region, according to a report shared with EnterpriseAM in August by cybersecurity firm StormWall. The sharp rise in cyberattacks was largely fueled by escalating geopolitical tensions, according to the report, particularly due to Israel’s attacks on Gaza and surrounding countries, turning the region’s digital infrastructure into a battleground for state-sponsored actors and hacktivist groups.

DDoS attacks, or distributed denial-of-service, work by overwhelming a website, server, or network with a flood of internet traffic from multiple sources, preventing legitimate users from accessing the service. These attacks can shut down businesses for hours or days, causing significant financial loss and damage to reputation.

The financial sector emerged as the main target across the region, accounting for 38% of all DDoS attacks in 2Q 2025 a 26% increase compared to the previous year. Around 79% of cyberattacks within this sector targeted banking APIs and payment processing systems. “The biggest attack on the financial sector was 1.8 Tbit/s and targeted a bank in the UAE,” according to the StormWall report. “The longest attack lasted six days and was about 380 Gbps. On average, the attacks lasted 14 minutes.”

The government sector was the second most targeted industry at 16%, seeing a 53% y-o-y increase. Telecommunications came in third at 14%, with mobile network operators bearing 61% of attacks in that sector.

Saudi Arabia remained the most targeted country in the region at 22%, though its share dropped from 28% in 1Q 2025. Palestine and the occupied Palestinian territories saw their share jump by 73%, growing from 11% in 1Q to 19% in 2Q, while Iran’s share rose slightly from 16% to 17%. During 2Q, a total of 8.2 mn DDoS attacks targeted the Israeli occupation’s digital infrastructure — more than four times the number in 1Q.

Egypt has not been spared the onslaught. Egypt’s growing reliance on digital infrastructure and economic automation has placed it squarely in the crosshairs of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

Egypt ranks second in Africa for cyberattacks, according to cybersecurity firm PositiveTechnologies, accounting for 13% of incidents in the continent. Last year alone, more than a hundred listings on dark web forums offered stolen Egyptian databases for sale or distribution, including one alarming post advertising the personal data of 85 mn Egyptian citizens. Egypt’s vital systems are also in hackers’ sights, with power grids, banking networks, transportation, and government operations facing relentless threats.

How to protect your business: Cybersecurity experts recommend several preventative measures to prevent cyberattacks. The first is to strengthen your defenses by deploying multi-layered DDoS protection solutions and cloud-based scrubbing services that can absorb major attacks. Using threat detection systems that spot probing activities before full-scale attacks launch, using multi-factor authentication systems and end-to-end encryption, training employees to recognize phishing and social engineering attempts, and maintaining regular, secure, offline backups of critical business data for quick recovery could save you a lot of grief (and operational and reputational damage).

Ears to the Ground

Storytime with great company

? Hosted by British presenter and reality star Jamie Laing, Great Company is a weekly podcast that tackles pretty much every topic under the sun, spanning art, social issues, politics, business, and much more. Since March 2024, Laing has released over 80 episodes under one common theme: the search for stories that bring humans together.

The guests are just as diverse as the topics. The podcast features everyone from sleepexperts that argue lack of sleep is just as dangerous as smoking, businessmen who lost everything in the blink of an eye, and neuroscientists discussing phone addiction, making browsing through the podcast’s backlog itself an enjoyable experience.

On friendship and intimacy: Given the fact that we’re big fans of contemporary British philosopher and bestselling author Alain de Botton, his episode with Laing was one we simply couldn’t miss. Over the course of 75 minutes, they discuss the difficulties of building new friendships as one gets older, with de Botton adeptly discussing the concept of forming connections, the specific problems facing men when it comes to emotional expression and affection, and the psychological states that lead people to remain in toxic relationships out of fear of loneliness.

What truly caught our attention — beyond the guests and the engaging topics — is Laing’s ability to volley with his guests. The host proves sincere, as is evident in his interactions with de Botton and his admissions of fear about fatherhood. In this way, Laing is not only a host, but rather an engaging conversationalist who isn’t afraid to open up. Our only criticism is that oftentimes integrated advertisements took away from otherwise genuine and heartfelt moments.

The fight for second place in the English Premier League

It’s a quiet day on the pitches both domestically and internationally a calm that will not hold, with both the fourth round of the Champions League group stage and the 13th round of the Egyptian Premier League set to kick off tomorrow.

Today’s main event sees Sunderland and Everton go head to head as part of the Premier League’s 10th round, with a starting whistle at 10pm. The match is especially significant due to Sunderland’s impressive form since returning to the top flight this season after an eight-year absence, seeing them in the top four heading into this round. Sunderland have now slipped to seventh on the leaderboard, but a victory tonight could shoot them straight up to second place.

Other European league matches to flip through:

  • Sassuolo vs. Genoa — Serie A (7:30pm);
  • Lazio vs. Cagliari — Serie A (9:45pm);
  • Real Oviedo vs. Osasuna — La Liga (10pm).
