WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Gov’t to launch tenders for desalination plants soon

Good afternoon, friends, and welcome to a new workweek. Kicking off the week is news about the latest updates on Egypt’s mega desalination projects, US continued strikes on Yemen, and Mercedes’s latest attempt to regain its market share in China and Europe.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Gov’t to launch tenders for desalination program soon: The Finance Ministry is expected to kick off the first phase of its planned desalination tenders — which involve four desalination plants with a capacity of 3 mn cbm/day — in 2Q 2025, a senior government source told EnterpriseAM. The ministry is reportedly awaiting the approval of the Sovereign Fund of Egypt to begin tendering the first phase, which could be expanded to 10 plants.

Where things stand: Land has already been allocated for the projects, and several prequalified companies are ready to submit their proposals, our source said.

We knew this was coming: The government over a year ago set forth a plan to offer four desalination plants to the private sector in 1H 2024 as part of a broader plan to tender a total of 21 plants. The tender for the first batch was delayed pending the completion of land allocation and financial revisions due to exchange rate fluctuations.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

It’s all eyes on Trump’s strikes on Yemen's Houthis in the foreign press this morning: At least 31 people were killed and 101 others injured in the large-scale military strikes launched by the US on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on Saturday, Yemeni health ministry spokesman Anees Al Asbahi said in a statement on X, citing the latest statistics from the Houthi-run ministry. The strikes — which came in response to the Iran-backed militant group’s repetitive attacks on vessels in the Red Sea — might continue for weeks, a US official told Reuters.

AND- The AI race is heating up: Chinese tech company Baidu has launched two AI models, ERNIE 4.5 and ERNIE X1, as it seeks to gain ground in the AI race, according to a company statement. The X1, a deep-thinking reasoning model, reportedly delivers performance comparable to DeepSeek R1 at half the price with “enhanced capabilities in understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution.” Meanwhile, ERNIE 4.5, Baidu's latest native multimodal foundation model, offers enhanced language skills, multimodal comprehension, and improved reasoning abilities, reportedly outperforming GPT-4.5 at just 1% of its price. The story got ink in Reuters.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Mercedes joins the EV price war

Mercedes just pulled back the curtain on its most affordable sedan yet — and it’s electric. With an estimated sticker price of USD 55k to USD 65k depending on trim and options, the German automaker seeks to compete with Tesla’s Model 3 and expand its EV lineup, Bloomberg reports. Mercedes is betting that its latest model will help it claw back its market share in China and Europe, where it has been long losing ground to BYD and other Chinese automakers.

What’s so special about the new CLA? The new CLA is designed to be “the most efficient and the most intelligent Mercedes we’ve ever made,” CEO Ola Källenius said at a launch event in Rome. This will be Mercedes’ first EV built from the ground up on a dedicated electric-first platform, rather than adapting a combustion engine design — it’s also the automaker’s first non-luxury EV. The sleek design is tech-packed, boasting an industry-leading 492-mile range, reportedly outpacing competitors in this segment. “There is no Chinese car with the same range in this segment,” said Mercedes’ technology chief Markus Schäfer. The CLA will also feature next-gen software, AI-powered voice assistance, and a UV-filtering glass roof designed to enhance cabin comfort.

The new release hedges against uneven consumer patterns: While EV sales surged in China — almost 35% in January — and parts of Europe, growth has been slower in markets like the US, where hybrids remain popular. That’s why Mercedes is offering a hybrid version of the new CLA alongside its fully electric model. “If the world is not dominant electric by 2030, we […] cannot walk away from a significant part of our revenues,” Källenius admitted. By keeping one foot in both worlds, Mercedes is ensuring it doesn’t get left behind if the EV transition takes longer than expected.

What’s going on in the EV market? Despite a very publicly volatile week for Elon Musk’s Tesla, which saw shares in the US tumble by 15% — marking its steepest drop since 2020 — and German registrations for the vehicle plunging 70% over the past two months, the rest of the EV market is having a good year, with an almost 50% global uptick y-o-y as of February. While Mercedes' CLA carries a roughly EUR 10k premium over Tesla’s Model 3, Musk’s stock market slump has created an opening for Mercedes to attract disillusioned buyers seeking a premium EV alternative.

Chinese EV continue to flex their dominance even as tariff tensions rise: Xiaomi, Geely, NIO, and Xpeng have all reported surging deliveries in 2024, shrugging off a sluggish domestic economy and newly imposed US and EU tariffs, Bloomberg writes. China’s auto exports jumped 46% in early 2025, while EV sales at home soared 85% in February, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s EV market is heating up with new arrivals. Chinese automaker Zeekr debuted its Zeekr 001 and Zeekr X models this month, priced at EGP 2.7-3.3 mn and EGP 2.1 mn, respectively. Meanwhile, Raya Auto expanded its XPENG lineup with the launch of the G6, joining the P7 and G9 last month. These new models expand the existing lineup of EVs available in Egypt. Still debating whether or not to hop on the bandwagon? We did the thinking for you in this edition of the Enterprise Guide.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

The saying is true — three’s a crowd

? Half of the population is called Mohamed, but that's not premise of the show. Nos El Sha’b Esmo Mohamed is one of the standout new series lined up for the second half of Ramadan. The show takes a comedic and lighthearted approach to exploring societal and relationship dynamics in contemporary Egyptian life. Following the popular 15-episode format, it offers a lighthearted perspective on everyday struggles faced by the average Egyptian joe: The Mohamed.

What to expect: Mohamed (Essam Omar), works as an airport engineer while co-owning a toy store with his mother-in-law Mervat (Sherine). His life takes a dramatic turn when his wife Mai (Hagar El Sarrag) suspects him of infidelity. Her suspicions prove warranted, as Mohamed is indeed involved with his coworker Sara (Mayan El Sayed) and plans to marry her.

When Mai leaves their home following unconvincing reassurances, Mohamed believes this clears the path for his relationship with Sara. However, complications arise as Mervat attempts to mediate, and Sara’s mother (Rania Youssef), works to prevent the marriage.

Behind the scenes: Writer Mohamed Ragaa has emphasized the importance of creating media that balances entertainment and social commentary, encouraging the audience to reflect on important themes even within a comedic framework. This thoughtful approach is evident in the series’ execution, which has been years in the making.

The verdict? Based on the first two episodes, this series shows tremendous promise. In a season where many shows have struggled to connect with audiences, Nos El Sha’b Esmo Mohamed stands out as one of the few that hit the mark.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can find the series on Shahid, or watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:40).

INSIDE INDUSTRY

Industrial developers could be the key to maximizing returns on state-owned land

The government is now shifting its focus toward using government-owned companies’ unused assets for industrial development, after years of focusing on residential, commercial, and administrative projects. Officials are on the lookout for industrial developers to optimize returns on state-owned industrial land — an effort long overdue and previously attempted on a limited scale — industry insiders told EnterpriseAM.

The move will see increased attention to plots deemed unsuitable for real estate and commercial projects, with many areas owned by public sector companies situated outside of residential areas potentially finding investors from the industrial sector, CPC Industrial Development Company CEO Moataz Baha El Din told EnterpriseAM. While many public sector companies have monetized plots in residential areas through direct sales or partnerships with real estate developers, offering up its cheaper land outside of these areas to industrial developers could open up some important revenue streams.

However, industrial developers favor vacant land that can be equipped and tailored to one’s wishes, in contrast to unused buildings owned by the public sector, Baha El Din added. Baha El Din explained that this company is keen to work with the government to utilize state-owned industrial land.

Different plots may also appeal to different investors, as investors will assess plots based on their compatibility with different industries, Bahaa El Din and Freezones Investors Association chairman Moatasem Rashed told us. Available infrastructure, utility readiness, and regulatory compliance will also influence decisions, we were told. Bahaa El Din emphasized that industrial zones must adhere to strict zoning rules, preventing incompatible industries — such as food and chemicals — from operating in close proximity.

We’ve seen several similar initiatives recently, like when four state-owned companiesinked agreements in 2023 with private-sector firms to co-develop new factories on land owned by government-owned companies. The projects included a factory for chlorine pellets and another for PC wire on land owned by Chemical Industries Holding Company, a hydrogen processing unit on land owned by Egyptian Chemical Industries, and a kidney dialyzers factory on land owned by El Nasr Pharma.

The government is also thinking beyond traditional industrial zones and has recently repurposed land adjacent to petroleum sites and designated areas in the Red Sea’s Ras Shukeir as a “green industrial zone” for petrochemicals, green hydrogen, and ammonia production.

The exact way the initiative will work is still yet to be determined, The Public Enterprises Ministry is open to multiple models for industrial development, Polaris Parks General Manager Bassel Shoirah told Enterprise AM. Options include outright land sales to private developers or joint ventures to industrialize the land.

Polaris Parks is one of the interested parties, and is currently awaiting a list of available plots to consider for investments, we were told. The company is also exploring collaborations with the Public Enterprises Ministry for hotel and resort development. Although still in the feasibility phase, initial plans involve converting select government buildings into boutique hotels.

The success of this initiative will depend on offering competitive investment incentives, Freezones Investors Association chairman Moatasem Rashed told us. Transparent pricing mechanisms for land sales or partnerships will also be crucial.

It’s hoped that the collaboration with industrial developers and global partners will bolster Egypt’s efforts to create an attractive investment climate, Public Enterprises Minister Mohamed El Shimi highlighted, according to a ministry statement. The ministry aims to convert idle public-sector land into industrial zones, supporting the national strategy for sustainable industrial growth, boosting local production, and creating jobs.
