WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

The lowdown on the Brics summit

Good afternoon, friends, and a very happy Thursday. We’re looking forward to a weekend of good weather, exciting matches, and a plethora of activities after a long newsweek.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

It’s a wrap for the Brics Summit in Russia: The heads of Brics nations — including President Abdel Fattah El Sisi — are in the Russian city of Kazan for the last day of the annual Brics Summit.

What went down today: El Sisi gave a speech (runtime, 4:26) to the Brics Plus summit where he said that the Israeli war against the Palestinian people and the expansion of aggression into Lebanese territories is a “stark testament to the abandonment of and disregard for principles, the prevalence of double standards and the lack of accountability and justice.” The president also called into leveraging multilateral development banks to grant more access to developing nations, especially the Brics’ New Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The president also called into: Leveraging multilateral development banks to grant more access to concessional financing to developing nations, especially the Brics’ New Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank; Capitalizing on the Brics Plus meetings to strengthen South-South cooperation; Maintain cooperation and dialogue among developing nations to safeguard the integrity of the multilateral international system and to “collectively oppose endeavors to impose unilateral policies that are detrimental to the interests of our nations.”

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

International heads are turned towards Harris and Trump as the US elections inch closer. With less than two weeks left until the elections and razor-thin margins, the involved parties are ramping up their campaigns. Canvassers for current VP Kamala Harris targeting her weakest demographic, white nonunion workers, while Republicans in favor of former president Donald Trump lobby for more stringent oversight at the polls to avoid the perceived participation of noncitizens, despite US election security officials emphasizing that voter fraud has become exceedingly rare. (NYT | Reuters | Bloomberg)

Harris has distanced herself from current US president Joe Biden, stating that her presidency “would not be a continuation of the Biden administration.” She has emphasized that she hopes her time in the office “represent[s] a new generation of leadership on a number of issues.” (CNN)

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Say goodbye to passwords, and hello to passkeys

RIP to the hundreds of passwords you’ve had to remember throughout the years. The FIDO Alliance is working towards the adoption of a passkey to replace the traditional password. Major tech companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Meta are on board and ready to implement the new system, according to Vox.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

What’s wrong with normal passwords? Passwords have become a significant security vulnerability that often leads to data breaches and even identity theft. They’re also a hassle to remember, which leads people to reuse their credentials — putting them at further online safety threats. The FIDO Alliance was formed in 2013 to address these concerns, recognizing that traditional password systems are outdated and increasingly perilous.

The solution: Passkeys offer a more secure and user-friendly alternative to passwords. By using two encrypted files — a “lock” on the website and a “key” on the user's device — passkeys eliminate vulnerabilities associated with traditional passwords. Once set up, logging in can be as simple as a fingerprint scan or facial recognition. Although some platforms still retain passwords for backup, the transition to passkeys is underway, gradually phasing out the reliance on passwords altogether.

The serial killer that got away with it

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

? The Zodiac has fascinated true crime enthusiasts for decades. Yesterday, Netflix released This is the Zodiac Speaking, a docu-series that dives into the story of one of the most notorious figures in American criminal history. The episodes focus on Arthur Leigh Allen as a potential suspect, weaving in the Seawater family, who had unsettling interactions with him in the 1960s.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

There's a dual perspective. The scenes alternate between the Seawater family's experiences, and insights from police, journalists, and experts like Robert Graysmith. The Seawater siblings' detail how their view of Allen transformed from admiration to horror as his true nature is revealed.

It’s different from the other Zodiac documentaries. While it does dive into the gruesome details of the crimes, it balances this with a tender examination of the family's relationship with Allen, illustrating the complexity of their feelings and the main betrayal. It’s a fresh perspective on a familiar tale, introducing the personal tragedies involved.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the docu-series on Netflix or watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:07).

EARS TO THE GROUND-

? There are no stupid questions. CrowdScience, a BBC podcast, asks (and answers) all the embarrassing, hilarious, and seemingly inconsequential science questions you may have. In each episode, host Anand Jagatia tackles one query submitted by a listener with the help of experts.

Are cars apex predators? asks listener Eoin Donnellan. Cars and apex predators like tigers, sharks, and wolves have a lot in common — nothing attacks or eats them, and they impact wildlife and the ecosystem directly and indirectly, most significantly by killing. Jagatia interviews zoologist Sam Helle, environmentalist Paul Donald, head of an environmental construction company Antonio Borges, and environmental chemist Zhenya Tian to discuss the damage that cars have on the ecosystem, and how that compares to the effect of an apex predator.

Jagatia’s playful curiosity and the professional insight volunteered by experts make for an easy listen. The episodes span between 30-40 minutes long, giving comprehensive but not overbearing answers to questions big and small, like: What’s the voice inside my head? Why do my armpits smell? What’s the fairest voting system? Why are seas salty? And how many flies have ever existed?

WHERE TO FIND IT- Set your curiosity free with CrowdScience on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and the BBC website.

LIFESTYLE

Is less really more?

Less stuff equals more life, supposedly. Extreme minimalism is a lifestyle where people try to live with as few things as possible, often limiting belongings to around 100 items or less, while regular minimalism is about decluttering and keeping only what you need. This lifestyle isn’t about making yourself go without, but rather about simplifying life to focus on what truly matters. So whilst consumerism takes a hold globally, extreme minimalism pushes back to reclaim time, space, and mental clarity. But is it effective?

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

What does it look like? The idea is to own only what you absolutely need. It could mean living in a small space with very little furniture or, for some, being able to carry everything they own in one backpack. One extreme minimalist, Fumio Sasaki, famously got rid of his bed, choosing instead to sleep on a simple futon.

How they do it: Two popular methods are the 90/90 rule and the one in, tenout rule. The 90/90 rule involves asking yourself if you’ve used an item in the past 90 days, and if you plan to use it in the next 90 — if the answer is no, it’s probably time to let it go. The second method dictates that every time you bring something new into your home, you get rid of ten other things. This keeps your belongings in check and prevents things from piling up again.

Reducing your possessions doesn’t just clear out your physical space — it clears out mental space, too. Research has shown that when you have fewer things, there’s less to manage, clean, and think about, leading to less stress and more focus on the things that make you happy, like relationships or personal growth. Many people who embrace this lifestyle report feeling lighter, more in control, and less overwhelmed by the constant noise and demands of modern life.

But minimalism ≠ being cheap to yourself: By buying less, people can save money that can then go towards experiences, travel, or even long-term goals like paying off debt or saving for retirement. Instead of just buying things because they’re on sale or convenient, it encourages you to think carefully about every purchase. Instead of buying five pairs of shoes, you might buy one sturdy, versatile pair that works for most occasions.

Another reason people are drawn to extreme minimalism is the positive impact on the environment. Many minimalists focus on buying high-quality, durable products that don’t need to be replaced as often, which helps reduce the strain on natural resources and keeps unnecessary waste out of landfills.

But it isn't for everyone. Living with very few possessions can be tough, especially in a world that encourages buying more. Parting with sentimental items can be emotionally challenging. There’s also the practical side — some people might need more things to feel comfortable in their day-to-day lives, and sometimes it’s not a choice. New parents may need to buy more items to accommodate their newborns, especially as they grow. People with physical limitations may need more equipment to help around the house.
