WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Ain Sokhna industrial zone launches two factories worth combined USD 210 mn

Good afternoon, friends. We hope this finds you well and that your air filters are earning their keep today. We come with glad tidings of two new industrial zone factories breaking operational ground in Ain Sokhna, alongside details on Trump’s Mideast tour, and Google’s rough week.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Two factories worth a combined USD 210 mn are launching operations in Ain Sokhna: China’s state-owned Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes Company is inaugurating a USD 150 mn ductile iron pipes plant in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone today, while Turkish sanitary product company Hayat’s local subsidiary Hayat Egypt is launching a USD 60 mn project in the zone, according to a cabinet statement. The projects are part of ongoing efforts to develop the Suez Canal Economic Zone’s four industrial zones and six ports.

Xinxing broke ground on the iron pipes factory in May of last year. The project, which is located in Sokhna’s TEDA industrial park, was projected to manufacture 250k tonnes of cast iron pipes per year with an annual production value of USD 1.2 bn.

And Hayat Egypt is launching a tissue factory: Hayat Egypt in November 2023 inked a EUR 30mn medium-term loan agreement with Emirates NBD Egypt to finance plans for a tissue factory in Ain Sokhna that was at the time estimated to be worth USD 70 mn.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Trump kicks off Mideast tour with Saudi Arabia visit: US President Donald Trump has arrived in Riyadh to begin a four-day Middle East trip focused on securing tns of USD from the Gulf, marking his first scheduled overseas trip since taking office. Trump is seeking USD 1 tn from Saudi Arabia alone — an amount equivalent to the Kingdom’s gross domestic product last year and well beyond the USD 600 bn it pledged. The presidential itinerary includes visits to Qatar on Wednesday and the UAE on Thursday, but notably omits Israel, raising questions about shifting US priorities in the region.

Trump is expected to announce an agreement that would give Saudi Arabia access to semiconductors imports from tech giants like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, allowing it to secure components that are necessary for developing AI models and potentially giving a significant boost to the Kingdom’s technological capabilities. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Google isn’t sure where to look for answers

It’s a bad week for Google. The California-based tech giant has found itself in a precarious situation — between Apple formulating plans to reshape their native Safari browser to prioritize AI-powered search engines, Perplexity AI quickly climbing up the search engine rank, and bns of USD worth of lawsuits piling up, it seems Google’s dominance is quickly coming into question.

Do mind the competition: According to CNBC, Perplexity is in “late-stage talks” to raise USD 500 mn at a USD 14 bn valuation — up from USD 9 bn in November 2024 — in a funding round led by venture capital firm Accel. Perplexity is betting big on AI-powered web browsers, and they’re not alone. In 4Q 2024, OpenAI launched a search feature within ChatGPT. Earlier this year in March, Anthropic followed by introducing search engine functionality within its chatbot, Claude.

Perplexity’s speedy ascent could mean bad news for Google. Though Google was indeed quick to introduce AI overviews into its search results in 2Q 2024, users were quick to point out fatal mistakes made by the search engines, such as claiming that former US President Barack Obama was Muslim, and suggesting the use of non-toxic glue to make cheese “stick” to pizza. On the flip side, Perplexity users report receiving real-time, accurate information from reputable journals with direct citations from the AI-powered search engine.

What does this shift towards AI search mean for the search engine? Earlier in May, Apple executive and Senior VP Eddy Cue claimed that Safari searches fell for the first time ever in April 2024, a drop he attributed to the rising number of users utilizing AI search engines, according to Reuters. Bloomberg reports that Apple is currently exploring a complete redesign of their Safari web browsers in a move that would see them shift towards AI-powered search — and in doing so, away from Google, which pays approximately USD 20 bn annually for the privilege of being the default search engine on Safari.

Google is in denial. Following Cue’s statement, Google was quick to issue a response: “We continue to see overall query growth in Search. That includes an increase in total queries coming from Apple’s devices and platforms.”

Nothing’s quiet on Google’s western front this week. Losing the AI race isn’t the only concern Google has right now. Reuters reports that Google is set to pay USD 50 mn to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by a former employee accusing the tech giant of racial bias against black employees. Google is also facing over EUR 12 bn worth in damage claims from several price comparison websites throughout the EU, Bloomberg reports.

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Filling good

? What makes a good sandwich? At Bakery Khan, that’s up to you to decide. When it comes to customizable sammies, there aren’t that many players claiming the game — and Bakery Khan is here to play with a truckload of sweet, savory, oriental and western baked goodies at your fingertips.

The menu is overwhelming — and we loved to scroll through it. At Bakery Khan, more is more. The bakery has a seemingly infinite supply of croissants, pâtés, mana’ech, cinnamon rolls, donuts, danishes, muffins, and other goodies — the sort you find yourself inclined to bring with you on your way to a Friday afternoon gathering. The bakery’s crowning jewel, however? Their sandwiches — and the endless possibilities that come with them.

But first — the staples. We gladly went overboard with our order — on the savory front, we got the spinach pastries box, the halloumi cheese man’oucheh, the zaatar man’oucheh, and a sausage croissant. We left no crumbs. The primary selling point was freshness, followed by a flaky but soft texture. Star of the show? The mini spinach pastries.

It’s never not time for a donut. Donuts of Nutella, biscoff, and pistachio variations were tested, but the classic sugar donut reigned supreme. But it didn’t stand a chance against the fruity danish and the raisins and cinnamon danish — both of which proved re-order-worthy.

There are no bounds when it comes to customizing your own sandwich at Bakery Khan: you can opt for all sorts of bread, — including croissants — cheeses, veggie fillings, and protein-heavy fillings. We put in an order for a bagel stuffed with smoked beef, cheddar, onions, lettuce, and a special cocktail sauce, and a croissant that had an omelet and pastrami-sponsored surprise nestled inside, cozied up with tomatoes, peppers, and honey mustard. The sandwiches were perfect in all categories but one: portion. So if you’re feeling hungry, we’d recommend doubling down.

WHERE TO GET IT - Bakery Khan has branches in New Cairo, Hadayek El Ahram, Maadi, and Nasr City. You can also order through Talabat and Instashop.
