WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

United Bank is all set to IPO tomorrow

Good morning folks, and happy Tuesday. Buckle in for your daily shot of news and views — with a Gladiator retrospective thrown in just for fun.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

You can start snapping up shares of United Bank tomorrow: United Bank will kick off its planned offering of 330 mn shares — a 30% stake — on the EGX tomorrow, with the bank offering shares for up to EGP 15.6 a pop, according to a bourse statement (pdf). The first tranche will see 313.5 mn shares — 95% of those on offer — made available for private placement beginning tomorrow and running until 25 November. The remaining 16.5 mn shares slated for the public offering will be up for grabs between 27 November and 3 December.

PLUS- Fitch Ratings upgrades four local banks’ credit ratings: Credit ratings agency Fitch has upgraded the credit ratings of the four Egyptian banks within its purview, including the National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, CIB, and Banque du Caire. The upgrades come on the heels of Egypt’s recent sovereign credit rating upgrade and reflect “the strong correlation of the banks’ creditworthiness with that of the Egyptian sovereign, given the banks’ significant sovereign exposure,” according to Fitch.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

The international press is all over the shop this afternoon, with aid pledges to the developing world at the G20, rumblings of potential ceasefire negotiations in Lebanon, and a seemingly endless stream of new Trump administration appointees gracing international headlines.

Over in Russia, Putin is upping the nuclear ante amid rising tensions with the US: Russian President Vladimir Putin has lowered the bar for launching nuclear strikes after reports surfaced of US-approved Ukrainian missile attacks into Russian territory, Reuters reports. The Kremlin’s updated nuclear doctrine would allow nuclear retaliation against conventional threats to Russia’s or Belarus’s sovereignty, marking a stark shift from Russia’s previous policy announced in 2020, which reserved the use of nuclear weapons for responses to nuclear attacks or conventional attacks that threatened the existence of a state.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • CBE to stay the course, analysts tell EnterpriseAM: The Central Bank of Egypt is expected to leave interest rates unchanged when it meets on Thursday, amid persistent inflationary pressures driven by rising fuel prices as well as continuing geopolitical tensions in the region.
  • Another EGX debut is in the works: Local real estate developer Al Ahly Sabbour is looking to list some 20-25% of its shares on the EGX, with the company expecting to tap an advisor in early 2025.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- Another day, another degree increase in our temperatures. We’ll be seeing a high of 26°C and a chilly low of 16°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Let TikTok take care of your travel itinerary

TikTok is redefining how we explore the world. From uncovering hidden gems to sparking debates over excessive tourism and ethical travel practices, TikTok is shaping travel decisions for mns, National Geographic reports.

The social media app’s magic lies in its bite-sized, scroll-worthy videos. While Instagram shows off picture-perfect poses and YouTube asks for a 30 minute commitment, TikTok cuts right to the chase. Creator Emma Cooke explains the app’s allure: “If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a video is worth 10,000.” Translation? TikTok is where you get the real deal — no Photoshop required.

TikTok is a perfect medium for travel content, which has skyrocketed 410% on the app since 2021. The app’s users — 70% of which are under 34, a demographic group particularly interested in travel — report using the app to plan itineraries over legacy trip-planning sites like Tripadvisor. Taking a look at TikTok, it’s easy to see why: searching “things to do in Paris” will hand you an endless scroll of must-visit spots and hacks you didn't even know you needed. The app even tailors content to your location, so for many it’s like having a personal tour guide in your pockets.

The app’s travel trends range from surprisingly useful to downright quirky. We have the grocery store tourism, destination dupes, airport tray aesthetics, and more. On the more adventurous side, some creators have embraced “raw dogging” flights — facing long haul trips with no entertainment or distractions. Why? We’re not entirely sure, but TikTok has a knack for making even the oddest ideas go viral.

It’s not all sunshine and hashtags: For all its perks, TikTok’s influence comes with a few red flags. Viral videos can turn quiet, off-the-beaten-path spots into overcrowded messes. Take Barcelona’s Carmel Bunkers — one video later, and the area was overrun with tourists, leaving locals to deal with littering, noise, and vandalism. Even businesses are feeling the heat, with New York’s Dae Café going so far as to ban filming because TikTokers were clogging up their space.

The final verdict: It’s a goldmine of tips, tricks, and inspo, but it also raises questions about sustainability and ethics. One thing’s for sure, though — TikTok’s influence on travel isn’t going away anytime soon.

Prepare for a major Chrome revamp. Google is currently engaged in a “multi-year project” that will see the tech giant migrate its laptop-based operating system ChromeOS to its mobile operating system Android, according to a report from Android Authority.

While this isn’t a huge surprise, it is a bit of a twist. Google announced its plan to develop ChromeOS on the Android stack in June, with reported plans to streamline engineering efforts and integrate AI features faster. However, recent developments indicate that cross-pollination between the two operating systems is going deeper than initially expected — especially with the company merging Android and hardware teams, testing desktop windowing on Android tablets, and adding Android extensions to Chrome.

Why is this happening? This potential migration comes at a time where Google has been facing growing scrutiny, alongside the possibility of being forced to sell Chrome — making the shift to Android a strategically significant move to maintain its hardware ecosystem's relevance. The move would also help streamline engineering resources by concentrating the company’s efforts on one operating system alone, allowing Google to build more Android apps, target more users, and beat out the competition — ahem, Apple — for users and customers.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

The original Gladiator still packs a punch 24 years later

📺 Gladiator 2 might be the talk of the town, but let’s not forget where it all began — with Ridley Scott’s original Gladiator, a bloody masterpiece that turned ancient Rome into an arena of spectacle, revenge, and political skullduggery. Twenty-four years after it first hit the big screen, the original still stands as the quintessential Roman epic, filled with all the violence, bravado, and drama you’d expect when swords, sandals, and Caesar-sized egos collide. But does the original still hold up? Spoiler: It does, making it a perfect watch before you hit the theaters for take two.

The plot? Set in Ancient Rome, the original Gladiator follows Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a loyal general to Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). After being brutally betrayed by the emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) — who murders his father and seizes the throne — Maximus is left for dead and his family slaughtered.

Sold into slavery, Maximus rises as a gladiator, turning what starts as a quest for survival turns into a full-throttle mission for revenge. As Maximus rises to become the Roman crowds’ favorite gladiator, he comes to face off against Commodus, where politics, power, and justice all collide. As he seeks to fulfill his vow of vengeance, Maximus also dreams of returning Rome to its former glory, free from tyranny.

Gladiator doesn’t just portray ancient Rome — it feels like ancient Rome. The film mixes action, emotion, and politics in a way only the Romans could appreciate. Crowe’s Maximus is the ultimate antihero — gritty and brooding — while Joaquin Phoenix delivers a standout performance as a Commodus whose entitlement and insecurity dispose him toward power struggles.

In short, it’s a bloody good time. Whether you’re a fan of historical action, cynical power politics, or simply watching a revenge-fueled protagonist tear down the empire with a sword, this movie delivers. It's the perfect mix of action-packed chaos, and 24 years later, it’s still got the chops to make us cheer for the gladiators.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the film on Prime Video or catch the trailer YouTube (runtime: 1:35)
