The original Gladiator still packs a punch 24 years later

Returning to the brutal epic that turned ancient Rome into an arena of spectacle

? Gladiator 2 might be the talk of the town, but let’s not forget where it all began — with Ridley Scott’s original Gladiator, a bloody masterpiece that turned ancient Rome into an arena of spectacle, revenge, and political skullduggery. Twenty-four years after it first hit the big screen, the original still stands as the quintessential Roman epic, filled with all the violence, bravado, and drama you’d expect when swords, sandals, and Caesar-sized egos collide. But does the original still hold up? Spoiler: It does, making it a perfect watch before you hit the theaters for take two.

The plot? Set in Ancient Rome, the original Gladiator follows Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a loyal general to Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). After being brutally betrayed by the emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) — who murders his father and seizes the throne — Maximus is left for dead and his family slaughtered.

Sold into slavery, Maximus rises as a gladiator, turning what starts as a quest for survival turns into a full-throttle mission for revenge. As Maximus rises to become the Roman crowds’ favorite gladiator, he comes to face off against Commodus, where politics, power, and justice all collide. As he seeks to fulfill his vow of vengeance, Maximus also dreams of returning Rome to its former glory, free from tyranny.

Gladiator doesn’t just portray ancient Rome — it feels like ancient Rome. The film mixes action, emotion, and politics in a way only the Romans could appreciate. Crowe’s Maximus is the ultimate antihero — gritty and brooding — while Joaquin Phoenix delivers a standout performance as a Commodus whose entitlement and insecurity dispose him toward power struggles.

In short, it’s a bloody good time. Whether you’re a fan of historical action, cynical power politics, or simply watching a revenge-fueled protagonist tear down the empire with a sword, this movie delivers. It's the perfect mix of action-packed chaos, and 24 years later, it’s still got the chops to make us cheer for the gladiators.
