WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Lukoil to invest USD 23 mn in oil exploration in Eastern Desert

Good afternoon, friends, and welcome to the end of the workweek. It’s a relatively calm day at home, and we’ve got some good news for you. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced earlier today that Thursday, 24 July, will be a public holiday — so start planning for that long weekend.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Russian Lukoil plans to invest approximately USD 23 mn in oil exploration in the Eastern Desert, a government official told Asharq Business. Operations are expected to focus on the South Wadi El Sahl area, located west of the Gulf of Suez. The Russian company is set to conduct a seismic survey over an area of 200 sq km, in addition to drilling six exploratory wells throughout a three-year research period in the region.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s another day with a mixed bag of headlines in the international press. Among the stories getting top billing:

More than 60 people were reported dead after a massive fire broke out in a five-story hypermarket in Iraq. Authorities are still on the lookout for more bodies as 11 people remain missing, while 45 have been rescued. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, the governorate of Al-Kut city — where the hypermarket is located — filed a lawsuit against the building and mall owners. Results of a preliminary investigation will be revealed within 48 hours, Iraqi authorities said. (Reuters | AP | NYT | CNN | BBC)

MEANWHILE- US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday to announce a change to Coca-Cola’s recipe. The US president wrote that he had been “speaking to Coca-Cola about using real cane sugar in Coke in the United States," claiming the beverage manufacturer agreed to the change — yet a spokesperson for the company did not confirm the switch, according to CNN.

So, what’s the OG US recipe? Coca-Cola sold in the US is sweetened using corn syrup — a shift away from its international counterparts, which utilize cane sugar. US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr had previously advocated against the use of high-fructose corn syrup, with a Maha report published earlier in May noting that corn syrup contributed to child obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases. However, Trump’s backing argument was as simple as “it’s just better.”

A bitter aftertaste for the US economy. Replacing high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar might come at an economic cost. Corn Refiners Association President and CEO John Bode issued a statement claiming that the change would impact US manufacturing jobs, slow down farm income, and “boost imports of foreign sugar, all with no nutritional benefit.” (Reuters | BBC | CNN | AP | FT | Forbes)

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- If you’re not headed up north, we’d suggest staying indoors tomorrow, as temperatures are set to peak at 38°C, before cooling down to 24°C. Up north, we’re expecting a high of 29°C and a low of 25°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Microsoft’s Copilot can now access everything on your screen

Microsoft’s Copilot Vision can now access your entire screen. The tech giant rolled out an update to its visual assistant feature, Copilot Vision, that allows the AI tool to see everything that’s on your screen — as if you’re screensharing, but with an AI tool instead of a co-worker. The tool was previously limited to analyzing just two apps at a time and drawing connections between both.

Doubling down on efficiency. The new feature, currently available to Windows Insider users, allows AI to monitor what you’re viewing when browsing on Microsoft Edge, in addition to responding to queries based on phone camera insights. The update aims to help “analyze content, provide insights, and answer your questions, coaching you through it aloud,” in addition to providing “tips on making improvements to your creative project,” according to Microsoft.

There are some privacy concerns, however. Earlier in June, researchers reported a critical security dysfunction in Copilot that signaled a broader risk of AI agents being hacked. The security flaw meant that an attacker was able to access sensitive information from apps and data sources connected to the AI agent without the user ever clicking on anything. While Microsoft confirmed that the issue was fixed in the AI tool and no users were affected, the new feature’s expanded scope justifiably raises security concerns.

Big tech’s latest efforts in AI: Microsoft’s latest Copilot Vision update comes as part of broader efforts from tech giants to double down on AI, as Meta, OpenAI, Perplexity, Amazon and even Airbnb are also in the process of turning their AI tools into an everything app.

Is Apple lagging in the AI race? While most players are cranking up their gears, Apple is falling behind in incorporating AI into its products and services. While the iPhone-maker launched Apple Intelligence last year, it doesn’t seem to be making great progress in comparison to its competitors, with Apple failing to give consumers and stakeholders alike updates on its AI-backed Siri.

Troubles in Cook’s kitchen. The Apple CEO has been under scrutiny for Apple’s AI lag, with company leaders like COO Jeff Williams and top AI executives like Ruoming Pang leaving Apple to join Meta — signaling trouble in the company’s future.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

This cleaner-turned-detective has cracked the code

? Morgan Gillory is a single mom who works two jobs — who definitely loves her kids and never stops hustling. Reba McEntire references aside, let’s get you acquainted with one of the best crime series streaming now. Based on popular French television series HPI, High Potential follows Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), a middle-class mother who works night shifts as a cleaner — but that’s not the only thing she does. Gillory works at her local police department, where she just so happens to have the ability to solve crimes in mere minutes.

When Morgan is caught “tampering” with a sensitive case, she’s brought in for questioning. It doesn’t take the folks in charge long, however, to realize she actually managed to solve a hitherto unsolvable case. Initially brushed off as a lucky guess, the department takes Gillory seriously when she solves yet another crime just by one glance at crime footage. Turns out, she’s a high potential intellectual — with an IQ that’s tenfold the average.

Gillory is promptly offered a consultant position within the department, and is paired up with detective Karadek (Daniel Sunjata), who seemingly hates her guts — though that doesn’t last long as the duo begin to find their rhythm. As the episodes progress, Karadek, Gillory, and their team begin cracking down on the city’s toughest criminals, and one by one, they fall victim to Gillory’s brains — until one case stops them dead in their tracks.

What makes High Potential different is that you’ll never guess what’s happening. The most innocuous of clues prove detrimental, and the most damning prove irrelevant. The writers exerted tremendous effort and went to great lengths to come up with cases that’ll have you wondering: “how does one even think of that?” The 13-episode series has no filler episodes, with each covering a different case, all while tying in to other character-driven plotlines. Greenlit for a second season, High Potential is set to return later this year.

Friendly warning: brace yourself for quite the cliffhanger.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can stream High Potential on Disney Plus. You can also watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:20).
