WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Gov’t to launch tender for desalination plants in December

Good afternoon, friends. Congratulations on making it to the end of the workweek, especially with the start of school drop-offs, pick-ups, lunchboxes, and homework enforcement.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Gov’t back on track with water desalination plans: The Madbouly government plans to launch its first tender of renewables-powered water desalination plants in partnership with the private sector in December, a senior government source told EnterpriseAM. The project, which has been delayed for two years, will move forward with a batch of two to four plants.

REMEMBER- It was first revealed in December 2022 that Egypt will sign contracts to build 21 desalination plants in 2023, as part of the first USD 3 bn phase of the government’s desalination program. These plants are expected to process a combined 3.3 mn cubic meters (mcm) of water per day. The program will later expand this to 8.8 mcm / d at a total cost of USD 8 bn. More than 200 developers from 35 countries have shown interest in bidding for the projects.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s another busy afternoon in the global press as we wrap up the workweek, led by the Jimmy Kimmel show being taken off air and Trump’s meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Popular US late-night television show Jimmy Kimmel Live has been taken off air “indefinitely” following comments made on Monday about the suspected assassin of popular podcaster and conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The comedian and host alleged that the suspect — 22-year-old Tyler Robinson — is a supporter of US President Donald Trump’s Maga movement and criticized the administration’s subsequent attempts to “characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”

The episode was cause for much criticism, prompting the Disney-owned ABC network to nix the show. “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely,” an ABC spokesperson said, with further details remaining under wraps. The decision follows public pressure from the Trump administration to “punish Kimmel.” Trump — who has long notoriously pressured liberal-leaning media figures and broadcasters — celebrated the news. “Kimmel has zero talent,” the US President wrote on Truth Social.

Jimmy Kimmel Live follows in the footsteps of Stephen Colbert’s The Late Night Show, cancelled earlier in May after its host criticised parent network Paramount’s lawsuit settlement with Trump. “That leaves Jimmy [Fallon] and Seth [Meyers], two total losers, on fake news NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC,” Trump wrote. (BBC | CNN | Reuters | Financial Times | Guardian)

ACROSS THE POND- All eyes remain on Trump, following his arrival at Chequers Estate to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the second day of his visit to the country. The meeting follows yesterday’s state banquet with the royal family, which Trump described as one of the “highest honors” of his life. Both leaders are expected to discuss a slew of topics, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the latest attacks in Gaza. (BBC | CNN | Reuters | Guardian)

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The weekend is off to a relatively cool start, with temperatures in the capital peaking at 33°C before cooling down to 21°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

iPhone Air: Buy or bye?

Apple’s latest leap with the iPhone Air faced early criticism for its expected trade-offs in battery life and camera capabilities, but hands-on experience has given way to surprising appeal, revealing a device whose charm is difficult to resist. While positioned as the most… experimental purchase of Apple’s latest lineup, the Air’s lightweight design and comfortable one-handed grip are proving to be compelling selling points that resonate universally with users and reviewers.

Everyday durability: According to Gizmodo, the iPhone Air’s ultra-thin profile does make it prone to slipping from your grasp. The good news, however, is that the device is surprisingly resilient thanks to its Ceramic Shield 2 glass front and Ceramic Shield glass back — a composition that Apple claims makes it the most durable iPhone to date. At just 5.6 mm thick, the phone feels delicate (and maybe even flimsy), but its titanium frame provides excellent scratch and crack resistance. Bendgate is history now — the iPhone Air’s rigidity leaves almost no room for the contortion issues that plagued earlier thin devices.

The screen is sharper than ever. The device’s 6.5-inch OLED display delivers impressive specs, maintaining peak brightness of 3k nits even in direct sunlight. New anti-glare coating eliminates reflection concerns, while the 120Hz refresh rate — previously exclusive to Pro models — and always-on display option have left UX-obsessed users very happy.

But can its battery keep up with heavy-duty use? Concerns about the slim device’s battery performance have turned out largely overstated. The iPhone Air matches its predecessors — the iPhone 16 Pro and Plus — with 27 hours of video playback. While its compact dimensions accommodate only a traditional lithium-ion battery paired with Apple’s A19 Pro chip, this configuration comfortably powers through a full day with charge to spare. While it won’t match the reported 30+ hour battery life of the iPhone 17 Pro series, the MagSafe Battery Pack consistently advertised along this phone model will definitely be a helpful — and probably necessary — solution for extended use.

The device does show limitations during intensive tasks. Its slim profile restricts heat dissipation, causing noticeable warming around the camera plateau during GPU-heavy activities or 3D gaming sessions.

Is a single lens enough? Another hotly-debated drawback at launch was the iPhone Air’s single rear camera. The 48-megapixel Fusion camera, while featuring multiple virtual lenses and a 2x optical zoom, feels constrained compared to the triple-lens systems users have grown accustomed to. For average users, the camera proves adequate — though it doesn’t measure up to the photographic capabilities of the iPhone 17 or 17 Pro.

The standout feature is the Center Stage front-facing camera with its square image sensor, designed for more comfortable selfie photography. Combined with the Dual Capture functionality and Apple’s consistently high video quality standards, the camera system serves most users’ needs effectively.

The bottom line: The iPhone Air represents Apple’s successful balance of form and function, making the most sense for users who prioritize portability and everyday usability over cutting-edge features. If you’re someone who values the feeling of holding an elegant, lightweight device and primarily uses your phone for standard tasks — texting, social media, streaming, and casual photography — the Air delivers an exceptional experience. However, power users, photography enthusiasts, or anyone who relies heavily on their device for gaming or professional work should look toward the Pro models.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A medical drama that respects your intelligence

📺 In a television landscape saturated with medical dramas, The Pitt manages to stand out as something truly special, earning a remarkable 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and a bunch of Emmys earlier this week. Noah Wyle’s return to the emergency room more than three decades after his role in the classic drama ER marks more than just star power. His time on the soapy, hospital-set show seems to have shaped his decisions on The Pitt — as both an actor and an executive producer — all for the better.

Each of the 15 episodes of The Pitt unfolds in real-time, covering one hour of a single 15-hour shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The format isn’t just a gimmick — it creates an almost documentary-like intensity that places you right in the trenches with the emergency room staff. The claustrophobic setting amplifies the urgency and whirlwind of the occupation as the doctors and nurses handle an unrelenting barrage of emergencies.

At the center of the compelling cast is Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Rabinovitch, a battle-scarred attending physician carrying the weight of the pandemic and personal losses while mentoring a new crop of doctors. It’s remarkable how quickly you become invested in each character. They feel like real people you may know, with strengths, flaws, and complexities that extend far beyond their medical expertise, delivering drama sans the usual soap that plagues the genre.

Actual emergency room physicians are calling it the most accurate medical show they’ve ever seen. The show clearly consulted real ER doctors extensively, and it shows in every detail, from medical procedures to the systemic healthcare challenges that the professionals face daily. The Pitt manages to be expansively compassionate, showing sympathy for both overwhelmed hospital staff and frustrated patients navigating the healthcare system.

Disclaimer: This isn’t comfort viewing. It’s as gritty and graphic as television gets — it’s must-see TV that you wouldn’t call fun, but is utterly engrossing. If you’ve been searching for a medical drama that respects both your intelligence and your emotions, The Pitt delivers in spades.

WHERE TO WATCH- This HBO Max show is available to stream in Egypt on OSN+.

Manchester City will inaugurate their Champions League campaign by hosting Napoli at Etihad Stadium, also at 10pm.
