WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Telecom Egypt greenlights majority stake sale to Helios

Good afternoon, friends, and welcome to the start of a new workweek. We hope you enjoyed the brief break — it seems the news cycle is trying its best to catch us up.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Helios to acquire majority stake in Telecom Egypt’s data center hub: Africa-focused and London-based PE outfit Helios Investment Partners has gotten the all-clear from Telecom Egypt’s board to acquire between 75% and 80% of a subsidiary that will own the telco’s Regional Data Hub (RDH), according to a press release (pdf). The vehicle, which will consolidate RDH’s assets through a restructuring, will focus on developing the domestic data centers scene.

About the bid: The binding offer values RDH at USD 230 mn for 100% of the equity, with the figure potentially rising to USD 260 mn depending on pre-agreed performance metrics. The move is still subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

IN CONTEXT- Helios has been building up to a bigger Egypt play since last year, when it bought 49% of Raya Foods for USD 40 mn. The PE firm flagged plans to channel as much as USD 250 mn into three more acquisitions across fintech, digital infrastructure, and consumer goods.

ADVISORS- Our friends at EFG Hermes are acting as sole M&A financial advisor to Telecom Egypt, with Adsero-Ragy Soliman & Partners and A&O Shearman providing legal counsel.

Net Foreign reserves continued their ascent to USD 49.25 bn by the end of August, marking a USD 215 mn increase from July, according to data released by the Central Bank of Egypt.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s a busy day in the global press, with a hodgepodge of stories getting plenty of ink. Among the stories getting top billing:

Russia strikes down Ukrainian government building: In what is reportedly its largest aerial attack since the beginning of its attacks on Ukraine, Russia deployed some 800 drones into Kyiv, striking down the Ukrainian government’s main building. Of the 800 deployed, all but 54 drones and 9 missiles were intercepted, hitting targets across the country with damages recorded in north, south, and east Ukraine. At least three people were killed. “Such killings now, when real diplomacy could have started a long time ago, are a deliberate crime and a prolongation of the war,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. (CNN | Reuters | BBC)

ALSO- If you’ve been having some internet troubles today, it’s not just you. Parts of Asia and the Middle East are experiencing internet disruptions after multiple international undersea cables were cut in the Red Sea. “A series of subsea cable outages in the Red Sea has degraded internet connectivity in multiple countries,” internet watchdog organization NetBlocks said on X. The cause remains unclear. (Associated Press | NBC)

What to expect in Apple’s upcoming product launch

🍎 This Tuesday, 9 September, Apple promises to unveil an “awe-dropping” product launch. Speculations are pointing to at least seven new products, with the iPhone 17 lineup and its highly anticipated iPhone 17 Air being the only offerings we can bank on. The launch is expected to introduce Apple’s new hardware setup as part of a rumored three-year transformative game plan, and Fortune is assuming that Tuesday’s event will showcase Apple’s “most ambitious hardware strategy since the original iPhone launch.”

A visual revamp. iPhone users are in for a new interface by virtue of Apple’s new design language, Liquid Glass for iOS 26. Apple’s first major aesthetic redesign since 2013, Liquid Glass brings with it a new translucent look and fluid interactivity across all linked devices. Expect apps and icons to have bubble-like appearances, and everything else on your screen, from controls to tab bars and side bars, to fit into the new device’s round corners.

Behold: the thinnest iPhone ever made. The star of the show is undeniably the iPhone 17 Air. With a profile of 5.5mm — 2.3 mm thinner than its predecessors — and weighing only 145 grams, the iPhone 17 Air comes with some inevitable compromises, including a single rear camera, a smaller battery, and (to the chagrin of many) an off-center USB-C port.

Other enhancements to look out for: Better cameras are underway, with the standard iPhone expected to feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, and the Pro models to sport a more rectangular camera bump, with a 48-megapixel lens. The Pro models might also feel lighter in your hands, with aluminum replacing their usual glass backs for better durability. The Pro models will be available in new color palettes.

Better batteries are expected for the Apple Watch 11 and the Watch Ultra 3, with improvements in health-monitoring features, mainly blood pressure tracking and hypertension detection. The Ultra 3 is rumored to include capabilities for satellite connectivity. Health-monitoring will extend to the Airpods Pro 3, with a possible heart-rate monitor, backed by an improved battery life.

The anticipation for (the much-delayed) AI integration extends to Apple’s watches. The launch isn’t expected to include any promises for significant leaps regarding AI, even as Apple lags slower and slower behind its rivals… and its own promises. The company seems to be leveraging its new hardware designs to compensate as competition intensifies, while the market still awaits AI-powered Siri, now delayed to 2026.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

We were wrong about the second season of Wednesday

📺 By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes. Having dropped just last Wednesday — brilliant planning right there — the second part of the second season of Netflix’s most popular title, Wednesday, kicks off right where the first half ended.

Not-so-sweet dreams. Wednesday is in the hospital following her fall in the midseason finale, where she enters a dreamlike state only to find out her spirit guide is none other than Principal Weems (Gwendolyn Christie) — who seems to enjoy the idea of taunting Wednesday in the afterlife a little too much.

While the first half of the season was disappointing — given its fragmented narrative and confusing plot lines — the second half quickly proves it’s not here to play, allowing us a sliver of hope that perhaps the final act would make up for an initially underwhelming season. It did — and then some. The second half follows Wednesday, Enid, and the rest of the Addams clan as they venture to save Pugsley from the zombie-turned-human Isaac Night — or as Pugsley likes to call him, Slurp.

Principal Weems, oh how we’ve missed you. As Wednesday recovers, leaving the hospital and returning to Nevermore, she’s still haunted by the spirit of her ex-principal. Christie’s reprisal of the role was a breath of fresh air, and her witty one liners were a much welcome addition to every scene she was in. Yet it wasn’t just Christie with a noteworthy performance, with the entire cast — and Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta Jones in particular — delivering great performances in the season’s final act.

Ra-ra, ah-ah-ah. Speaking of stellar performances, the second half of the season saw the much anticipated appearance of global megastar Lady Gaga as Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary “raven” and former professor who Wednesday enlists to aid her in restoring her psychic abilities. Following directions provided by her grandmother, Wednesday summons Rotwood, who offers to reinstate her powers, albeit at a costly price.

To put it simply, the latter half of the season was fun. From a Freaky Friday-esque subplot involving Enid and Wednesday, the morbid Addams family moments that were missing from the first half, great dialogue, and a lion’s share of snark and wit, Wednesday proved that the first few episodes may have just been a bump along the road, proving most watchers — and our initial review — wrong.

The season quickly sheds its flaws and offers an engaging, binge-worthy experience that isn’t convoluted. If you’ve watched the first half and felt disappointed, we’d urge you to sit back down for the final act — and promise you’ll walk away feeling differently.

WHERE TO WATCH– You can stream the full season on Netflix, and catch the trailer for the second half of the season on YouTube (runtime: 1:58).

🎾 TENNIS-

A renewed rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz: The US Open men’s singles final will see Italy’s world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Spanish runnerup Carlos Alcaraz tonight at 9pm at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Sinner made it to the final after beating out Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime yesterday, while Alcaraz clinched the position by defeating Djokovic in last Friday’s semifinal.

History on the court: This match marks the first time in Open history that the same players have met on the courts of three Grand Slam finals during a single season, with Sinner clinching Wimbledon and Carlitos claiming Roland Garros. Sinner also managed a historic feat by reaching all four Grand Slam finals in one season, joining the ranks of Rod Laver, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.

In the women’s singles: Top-seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka claimed the title yesterday in a match against the US’s ninth-ranked Amanda Anisimova in straight sets (6-3 | 7-6). Sabalenka’s victory marks her second US Open title and first Grand Slam this year after losing out on the Roland Garros and the Australian Open.

INSIDE INDUSTRY

Turkish companies invested around USD 500 mn in Egypt in 2025

🏭 Turkish companies invested some USD 500 mn in Egypt this year, Matta Beshay, member of the Egyptian-Turkish Business Council, told EnterpriseAM. Investors are shifting from outsourcing to building independent factories and production lines, particularly in the Suez Canal Economic Zone’s (SCZone) Qantara West.

Total Turkish FDI in Egypt has now surpassed USD 3 bn, spread across some 1.7k companies, Beshay said. This includes around 200 factories in textiles, garments, and chemicals, concentrated in the 10th of Ramadan, Sadat City, and the SCZone.

Four Turkish factories worth USD 200 mn are currently under development in the SCZone, a source in the zone’s projects sector told EnterpriseAM. The lineup includes Eroglu Holding ’s USD 40 mn facility on a 62k sqm plot in Qantara West, slated to come online in 2025 and Hayat Egypt’s two new plants, which are planned to launch in 1Q 2026 and and late 2026 with total investments of USD 80 mn, catering entirely to exports.

These companies are part of a wider group of 18 firms that have signed on to establish operations in the SCZone, investing a total of USD 793.8 mn in the SCZone to date. This includes 10 companies in Sokhna (USD 508 mn) and eight in Qantara West (USD 285.8 mn).

Why Egypt? Financing challenges at home are driving Turkish expansion abroad, with banks in Turkey cutting off lending to several industrial sectors, particularly textiles and light industries, a source at the Egyptian-Turkish Business Council told EnterpriseAM. Investors are turning to Egypt as an ideal production base, supported by its EU partnership agreement and long-term European supply commitments. Low investment requirements in textiles have eased setup, and the sector is set to evolve from initial outsourcing into full-scale manufacturing for exports by year-end, the source said.

More projects in the pipeline: Klepsan will establish Egypt’s largest sanitaryware plant plant in the 6th of October, Beshay said. The 30k sqm facility is expected to break ground in October, following the receipt of land licensing, with an initial USD 7–10 mn investment (c. EGP 400 mn). It will produce water meters and valves to localize manufacturing. Looking ahead, at least 10 Turkish factories are expected to launch next year, beginning operations and exports, the SCZone source told us.

KCG Textile Egypt, a local subsidiary of Turkish group Kucukalik, will launch its USD 24 mn spinning factory in 8 months, with the 16.5k sqm facility being based in Tenth of Ramadan, KCG Textile Egypt’s Production Director Selim Aksiyote (LinkedIn) told EnterpriseAM. Looking ahead, the company plans to invest in a new 10k sqm confectionery facility, which would allow it to employ an additional 1.3k workers.

A Turkish industrial zone? Egypt could soon see the launch of a dedicated Turkish industrial zone in the SCZone, with studies already underway, head of the Home Appliances Chamber at the Federation of Egyptian Industries Hassan Mabrouk told EnterpriseAM. The existing Turkish cluster in the zone has already attracted manufacturers and investors, and a dedicated zone, similar to the Chinese and other industrial areas, could draw even more companies, Mabrouk said.

Local calls for reform on land ownership: Egyptian factories have also been invited to expand into the zone, but some have called for the government to restrict foreign companies to usufruct rights of 50 years while allowing Egyptian companies to own land outright, Mabrouk said. This would spur a manufacturing boom for local factories alongside Turkish appliance makers, he said.
