WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Adnoc and TotalEnergies plan marine motor oil production plant

Good afternoon, friends, and welcome to the almost-weekend. Like us, both the news cycle and the weather seem to be winding down in anticipation.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Adnoc Distribution is planning to produce marine motor oil in Egypt in partnership with TotalEnergies by 4Q this year, lubricants, base oils, and specialty products VP Saber Al Ammari told Asharq Business. The company’s production capacity is expected to hit 90k tons annually, with a sales target of 1.5-2 mn liters in Egypt by year-end, Al Ammari added.

REMEMBER- After making an entrance into Egypt as recently as 2023 through the acquisition of a 50% stake in fuel retailer TotalEnergies Egypt, the company has been quickly expanding both its number of service stations — currently standing at 240 — and its local manufacturing of oils. After kicking off the local manufacture of motor oil at the end of 2024, the company is now also pursuing manufacturing aviation fuel and entering the EV charging market.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

With news from Trumpland quieting down, it’s all eyes on Nvidia: US stock futures retreated slightly as investors await the release of giant US chipmaker Nvidia’s earnings, a major indicator of the strength of the AI boom and the impact of US-China trade tensions. S&P 500 futures inched down 0.1% this morning, while the S&P 500 rose 2%, treasuries dipped, and the USD held steady. Nvidia’s results, one of Wall Street’s most-watched events, are due today after market close.

A look into the crystal ball: The company’s 1Q revenues are projected to rise 66.2% y-o-y to USD 43.3 bn. While this exceeds growth at other megacap companies, it represents a significant slowdown from last year’s growth of over 250%. US export restrictions on Nvidia's H20 chips to China will cost the company a USD 5.5 bn write-down on inventory during the quarter, the chipmaker said last month. “This inventory write-off implies a USD 15 bn H20 revenue hit on a rolling 12-month basis,” BNP Paribas analyst David O’Connor wrote in a report picked up by CNBC.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- Slightly warmer temperatures are expected in the capital tomorrow, with the mercury set to rise to 32°C throughout the day and cool to 20°C at night, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Is Google losing connection with the internet?

Google’s attempt to secure the AI race might have come at a very costly price. In 2Q 2024, the California-based tech giant began rolling out AI Overviews — AI-summarized responses to search queries. Shortly after, the feature was called out (and briefly recalled) for frequent hallucination, which claimed Barack Obama was the first Muslim US president, and suggested glue as the je ne sais quoi factor your pizza needed. As AI-first search engines like Perplexity gain traction for more “accurate” results — though not entirely so — Google risks being edged out of the AI race and being left with the gutted out search engine they sacrificed.

Google’s pivot was the response to a perceived threat. OpenAI was the first to introduce AI-powered search features, with Anthropic hot on their heels. In April, searches fell on Safari for the first time in Apple’s history — which Apple’s Eddy Cue attributed to users favoring AI search models. Not great news for the company that pays USD bns to be Safari’s default search engine. Last week, Google introduced AI Mode search, touting it as its “most powerful AI search experience.” AI Mode operates by doling out AI-powered responses to queries, with the option to ask follow up questions and get deeper insights. Like any other AI search engine.

If it’s not broken… Google’s new flagship feature hasn’t been met with warmth, with many going as far as accusing the Alphabet subsidiary of revenue theft. AI Mode replaces the long list of links we’re familiar with with an AI-powered interactive summary. This model reduces traffic — and consequentially, revenue — to the websites, mining their information without credit. “Google [takes] content by force and uses it with no return [to the source] — the definition of theft,” said President and CEO of the News/Media Alliance Danielle Coffey in a statement. She added that referral links “were the last redeeming quality” of traditional search engines, now cannibalized by Google.

“If you don’t like it, leave.” According to Bloomberg, an internal document shows that the tech giant didn’t give publishers the choice to opt-out of AI Mode pre-rollout — a lie by omission, seeing as they launched without announcing. And if publishers think this is no bueno? They can opt out of Google altogether. This is easier said than done, as many publishers and site owners can’t afford to jump ship on a search engine that retains control over 90% of the search market. An interesting fact to note is that Google explored the option of giving publishers a choice, but ultimately dismissed the idea. Remember when they removed “Don’t be evil” from their code of conduct in 2013? Just asking, no reason.

Reddit was the first victim. Business Insider notes that popular news aggregation and forum platform Reddit’s exponential growth was largely due to being prioritized in Google searches for its wealth of experience-based content. Following the announcement of AI Mode, Reddit stocks dropped 5%. Analysts predicted the drop in traffic was in no small part due to Google’s search overhaul. Reddit Co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman still hopes that Reddit communities might offer a much-needed escape from AI search, BI reported.

Buried alive: Because AI Mode buries original source content and delegates links as merely backup support rather than first and final destination, The Intelligencer raises a pivotal question — how will these AI-powered search engines grow, when and if they’re no longer fed new information? With publishers losing traffic, traction, and revenue, who’s to say that they won’t be pulling out of Google or losing the finances to create as much content? Search engines and publishers are codependent on one another… and AI Mode is irreversibly damaging that relationship.

Under the Lamplight

Lost and found

Evenings and Weekends by Oisín McKenna’s is an intimate portrait of contemporary adulthood. McKenna’s debut piece follows three interconnected protagonists navigating the messy reality of being a thirty-something in London, specifically during a sweltering June heatwave in 2019.

The novel centers on Maggie, a 30-year-old artist-turned-waitress who discovers she’s pregnant and contemplates leaving London’s unaffordable lifestyle for her hometown. Her boyfriend Ed, the father-to-be, sees this as a chance to escape his own troubled past. Their story intersects with Phil, Maggie’s best friend caught in an unrequited love affair while supporting his mother Rosaleen through a cancer diagnosis.

Meanwhile, a whale is stuck in the Thames. This bizarre occurrence serves as a powerful metaphor for the characters’ unspoken emotions and sense of claustrophobia being trapped in their circumstances. McKenna skillfully uses London in all its complexities as a backdrop to the experiences of adults struggling to build their futures in a city that is full of as many obstacles as there are lucky chances.

Poetic and lyrical: Drawing from his background in spoken-word poetry, McKenna creates vivid, immersive prose that vividly portrays the intensity of each character’s experiences, connecting the reader to their emotional journeys. While his lyrical style occasionally blurs individual character distinctions, it delivered a rich, authentic portrayal of modern urban uncertainty and longing, and a generation caught between ambition and reality.

The battle for the Nile League title

⚽ The Nile League title race is reaching a fever pitch as Al Ahly has everything to lose and Pyramids await a miracle. All matches are kicking off at 8pm for fair conditions.

Al Ahly vs. Pharco: The Red Devils are welcoming Pharco onto the Cairo International Stadium pitch in what could be their coronation ceremony. Al Ahly are stepping into the match as league leaders with 55 points, needing a victory by any margin to guarantee the title. A draw may even suffice unless Pyramids achieve the impossible — scoring a minimum of six goals.

Ceramica Cleopatra vs. Pyramids: The Sky Blues are travelling to face Cermica at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium, carrying with them the hopes of their fans. Pyramids currently sit second with 53 points, requiring an additional three as well as an Ahly slip-up to claim their maiden league crown. This will prove a difficult feat for the visitors, as their opponents are chasing a CAF Confederation Cup qualification, which is within reach with a victory and Al Masry’s loss against Haras El Hodoud.

If Al Ahly draw and Pyramids win, both teams will be level on points, with goal difference during the championship phase determining who will lift the cup.

Also featuring: Petrojet will face National Bank while Al Masry lock horns with Haras El Hodoud.

The lights at Wrocław Stadium in Poland will be lighting up tonight to host the Europa Conference League final, seeing Chelsea and Real Betis go head-to-head at 10pm. The Blues earned their spot after defeating the Swedish Djurgården with an aggregate score of 5-1 during the semifinals, while Los Verdiblancos edged past Fiorentina with a narrow 4-3 aggregate victory. Chelsea hopes to add the Conference League trophy to their illustrious collection, while Betis dream of their first-ever European crown from what is the club’s inaugural continental final.
