WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Fitch’s BMI pushes up next fiscal year’s year growth forecast, pushes down current fiscal year projections

Good afternoon, friends, and happy almost-Friday.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Fitch revises up our growth outlook for the next fiscal year: Fitch Solutions’ research unit BMI now sees growth accelerating to 5.1% in FY 2025-2026, up 0.4 percent points from their previous 4.7% projection, in its latest country risk report for Egypt. The decision was supported by an expected improvement in Red Sea navigation, an uptick in the services sector on the back of calming geopolitical risks, and lower borrowing costs pushing up investment.

But it’s a forecast for the current fiscal year is not as rosy: The Fitch research unit trimmed its projection of Egypt’s economic growth by 0.5 percentage points for FY 2024-2025, and now sees the national economy growing at a 3.7% clip during the fiscal year, down from the 4.2% forecast in September. BMI attributed the cut to weaker performance in the last quarter of the fiscal year alongside the ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea that are cutting down on Suez Canal receipts.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

OpenAI is on a spending spree

OpenAI is burning through bills like there’s no tomorrow. After raising USD 10 bn last year, the company spent most of it in just 18 months. Now, it’s back with another USD 6.6 bn in funding and USD 4 bn in loans — but here’s the kicker, it’ll need more money in less than two years, the New York Times reports. By 2029, OpenAI’s expenses are expected to climb from the current USD 5.4 bn to USD 37.5 bn.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

The reason for this financial frenzy? Training AI is expensive. AI development is all about feeding enormous amounts of data into massive systems, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT relies on data centers packed with thousands of GPUs — high powered chips that cost USD 30k each — which run months-long calculations that rack up bills in the hundreds of mns of USD.

But it's not just chips. The electricity to power them, the data center space to house them, and the amount of hardware needed are all in short supply — and the prices are inflating. Companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are overspending to manufacture more GPUs, build new facilities, and secure enough power to keep their AI dreams alive. But these tools, aka our friend ChatGPT, are being offered to users for free, and sometimes with a low-cost subscription fee that barely scratches the surface of their costs.

The reason behind the madness: OpenAI is aiming to create artificial general intelligence (AGI), a machine that can think and learn like a human. The tech needed for this, like the new OpenAI o1 system, is bigger and more powerful than anything before it. Earlier this month, OpenAI disclosed their intention to ditch a clause that stops AGI being used for commercial gain, meaning that they may be looking to un-dent their financial reserves after the technology debuts.

The events take a turn, plunging her into chaos that puts her life, and others’, in danger.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

The plot: Nada Al Ashmawy (Nadine) works as the manager at a large bank, and decides to appoint the new employee Liqaa (Yasmine Raees) as her deputy. Despite her young age and quick promotion, Liqaa proves herself, which triggers hatred from her colleagues — some of which believe they were more deserving of the promotion than her. In a turn of events, Liqaa becomes accused of embezzlement and committing a felony.

Liqaa turns to Lotfi Aboud — a lawyer who gained fame after Radwa's case from the first series — to help her uncover the person who framed her, with the help of his partners Mustafa (Ahmed Shaheen) and Wafi (Amr Wahba). As if things weren’t complicated enough, a murder then takes place during a party organized by Nada, which puts everyone under suspicion.

The story starts off slow, but the pace picks up with each episode, encouraging viewers to follow the over 30-episode-long show. The events spark curiosity and intrigue to find the identity of the evil mastermind behind all the disasters. We would like to call out the slightly exaggerated acting, but other than that, it’s a great watch.

WHERE TO WATCH- The last episode of the series will be aired on DMC at 8pm tonight, and you can watch the whole series on Watch It. You can find the trailer on Youtube (runtime: 1:36).
