WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Gov’t moves closer to simplifying tax system for investors

Good afternoon, friends, and happy almost-weekend. The news cycle seems to have picked up the pace just as we inch closer toward the weekend.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

The General Authority for Investment and Freezones has finalised its inventory of all the 2224 different fees faced by investors, a government source told EnterpriseAM. All 67 relevant government entities were contacted and have sent all fees and stamps they collect, according to our source.

The inventory was done ahead of a Finance Ministry and Investment Ministry plan to replace the myriad and often confusing set of fees with a single unified additional tax on net income. Following three months of study, this move sets the stage for Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk and Investment Minister Hassan Al-Khatib to meet and finalize a decision on the new consolidated tax system, the source said.

The proposed tax will come at a rate of 3% to 5%, which will be collected with the investor’s tax filing. This is higher than the average we were previously told about in April, which suggested the additional tax would be around 2-3%, but still well below what many investors currently pay.

Despite the reduction in fees, officials think the new plan could double its annual turnover rate, as the new system will encourage more investment and help projects increase earnings, a government source told us in April.

AND IN OTHER NEWS- We finally have an opening date for the Grand Egyptian Museum, now set to open on 1 November, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced. The museum was initially scheduled to open on 3 July, but was postponed after Israel launched attacks on Iran and ratcheted up tensions in the region.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

It’s a busy afternoon as far as international business and finance headlines are concerned. Among the stories getting top billing:

Berkshire Hathaway underperforms, with shares dipping by a significant margin in the wake of Chief Executive Officer Warren Buffett’s retirement, sending a slew of investors to the exit. The US multinational conglomerate holding company’s Class A shares have dropped 14% since May 2 — coinciding with the last trading day since Buffett announced that he was handing over the reins to Greg Abel.

What gives? The underperformance comes even as Berkshire Hathaway’s core business reports healthy results — with the railroad, retail, manufacturing and utility divisions showing profit growth in 2Q 2025. Investors who had once deemed Berkshire Hathaway a safe haven during trade war fears are now shifting towards fast-growing tech stocks, according to the Financial Times.

SPEAKING OF TECH- AI giant OpenAI appears to be in talks with investors over a share sale that would catapult the tech company to a valuation of USD 500 bn, surpassing Musk’s SpaceX — recently valued at USD 400 bn — and setting it at the forefront of the world’s most valuable private-owned tech groups.

ALSO- The ChatGPT parent company has its eyes set on a USD 40 bn investment led by SoftBank, which has valued OpenAI at USD 300 bn — USD 200 bn short of its aspirations. The company is also considering a secondary stock sale that would authorize current and past employees to sell their shares, according to the Financial Times.

MEANWHILE- The Shanghai Composite Index reached a 3.5-year high, closing up 0.45% at 3.6k points today. The rise was driven by hopes of an extended US-China trade truce, with US President Donald Trump stating that he’s “very close” to a deal with China.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- Temperatures in Cairo are set to peak at a moderate 35°C tomorrow, before cooling down to 22°C. Up north, the weekend will be off to a cool start with a high of 28°C and a low of 26°C, according to our favorite weather app.

Pinterest records an uptick in male users

? More and more men are using Pinterest. The internet’s go-to inspiration app revealed in a recent trend report that men — especially Gen Z and millennial men — are a growing audience, now making up more than one-third of their 570 mn active global users. Known for its predominantly female audience, the network’s uptick in male users emerges as a surprise and signals a shift for the platform.

Amid an often-overstimulating internet, Pinterest remains the only non-social digital hub where users can freely dive into their interests while interacting with other people’s work. Because the leading visual search app tends to cater to creativity more than most networking apps, it has become a space where online users can step away from the chaos of social media. Correspondingly, insights from consumer research group GWI show that 65% of men globally want to express their “authentic selves” online — and Pinterest is definitely the place to start for that.

Hypermasculinity takes a back seat. Pinterest’s aesthetically pleasing pins seem to have inspired men to join the health and wellness trend, with GWI reporting that more than half of its global users are interested in sports, fitness, and exercise. Pilates is surprisingly high on their list of interests, with searches for “pilates outfit” witnessing a 300% increase, and other search variants related to the exercise seeing an upsurge as well.

The rockclimbing aesthetic is also on the rise, up 95%, along with hydration increasing by 50% and electrolytes 45%. Self-grooming emerges as a major focus for men on Pinterest, with searches related to healthy hair and skincare seeing a significant spike as well. Gender stereotypes are blurring among Gen Z men, with 46% of them saying they use Pinterest for fashion inspiration and searches for “male nail art designs” soaring by 115%.

It’s not just aesthetics — it’s also business. The Pinterest report reveals a staggering 620% increase in searches for “investment app,” a 360% increase for “stock investment,” and a 285% increase for “budgeting plans.” As users become fathers and homeowners, searches by millennial men related to home decor and parenting are on an upward trend with phrases like “milestone pictures” and “daddy and son” going up 415%. In short: never underestimate the power of a mood board.

This newfound demographic is every brand’s dream, with the report noting that “there’s never been a better time to reach men on Pinterest.” Almost half of men who use Pinterest are first-time adopters, according to the report.

Revisiting a classic: Season of Migration to the North

?An identity crisis: Written in 1966, Sudanese author Tayeb Salih’s Season ofMigration to the North is one of the classics of Arabic literature. Since its publication, the novel has left an indelible mark on the literary scene with its bold content and controversial themes that remain relevant today, earning its spot on the Arab Writers Union’s list of the top 100 Arabic novels of the 20th century.

The novel begins inside the home of our narrator, who returns to his humble village in Sudan after completing his studies in London. The narrator remains nameless, but is given a clear identity, a set of characteristics, and a link to the story’s true protagonist: Mustafa Sa’eed. Mustafa followed a similar path years earlier: he was a young man who was an expat, moving between Khartoum, Cairo, and London. He harbors feelings of rage and hatred toward the colonial powers that had brought ruin and misery to his country — yet must also navigate his reality as a privileged member of the English society, from which he seeks revenge.

Caught between vengeance and sorrow: The novel is inherently about revenge and the deep-seated anger held by colonized people toward the powers that continue to occupy them. Given the novel’s non-linear nature — with the author choosing to go back and forth in time — Season of Migration to the North is a novel best read in one sitting, lest you get lost.

Juxtaposition reigns: Between expatriation and the struggle to hold onto one's identity, and between the illusions of power and weakness, Mustafa Sa’eed embodies many paradoxes. This contrast reinforces the sense of loneliness experienced by those who find themselves in a world where they can’t truly belong. Despite some issues — such as certain details that could have been omitted in favor of others that might have provided further context — the novel remains an important read and a classic of Arabic literature, one that has since helped redefine the genre.

WHERE TO GET IT- You can place a special order for Season of Migration to the North from The Bookspot. You can also get the ebook on Kobo. The novel is also available in Arabic at Shorouk, Diwan, Aseer Al Kotb, and Al Masriah Al Lubnaniah.
