WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

FinMin completes USD 1 bn sovereign sukuk issuance fully subscribed by Kuwait Finance House

Good afternoon, friends, and congratulations on making it to the end of a shorter-than-usual work week. The best part? We’ve got another one coming right up.

**A QUICK PROGRAMMING NOTE- EnterprisePM is taking a publication holiday tomorrow in observance of the Islamic New Year and will be back in your inboxes on Sunday afternoon.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

The Finance Ministry completed a USD 1 bn sovereign sukuk issuance on the Vienna Stock Exchange today, in a private placement offering an annual yield of 7.875% with a three-year maturity, according to a statement from the Finance Ministry and another from the Vienna Stock Exchange. The private placement was fully subscribed by Kuwait Finance House and follows Egypt’s maiden sukuk issuance in February 2023.

The details: Sukuk holders will be paid a coupon every six months, with the first coupon set to be paid out tomorrow, according to the Vienna Stock Exchange statement. The issuance will help diversify funding sources and the investor base, the ministry statement reads.

Remember: A government source told us last month that the Finance Ministry could complete an issuance of international sukuk before the second half of June in order to repay some USD 1.5 bn of maturing 10-year bonds issued back in June 2015.

Israel will gradually resume natural gas exports to Egypt from the Leviathan field, starting with a reduced volume of less than 200 mn cf/day, as it restarts production from the field today, a government source told EnterpriseAM. Supply is expected to hit 850 mn cf/day in July and August — down from the 1 bn cf/day that would have been supplied at full capacity — before returning to normal levels later in the year. Reuters reported earlier today that the gas field would reopen within hours.

ICYMI- Israel halted Egypt-bound natural gas exports on Sunday as the US launched strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Israel had only just resumed gas exports on Thursday after a six-day pause, although most of this made its way to Jordan, with Egypt receiving only minimal volumes.

The government has restarted gas supplies to Mopco and Abu Qir Fertilizers, industry sources told EnterpriseAM. The government is also reportedly weighing an increase in domestic gas prices to offset the mounting cost of importing LNG from international markets, sources told Al Arabiya.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s all eyes on the Nato summit: Nato leaders meeting at a summit in The Hague today are expected to endorse a significant increase in defense spending to 5% of GDP over the next decade, more than double the current 2% target, as the alliance responds to growing European concerns about Russian threats to security. The new framework being considered at the two-day summit would split spending between 3.5% for core defense like troops and weapons, and 1.5% for broader security measures including cybersecurity and infrastructure protection.

US President Donald Trump put anxious Nato leaders at ease about his commitment to the alliance’s mutual defense obligations after telling reporters “We’re with them all the way.” He had previously raised alarm among allies by suggesting that there were “numerous definitions” of Article 5, the cornerstone agreement that treats an attack on one member as an attack on all.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- It’s another sunny day in Cairo tomorrow, with the mercury set to peak at 35°C before dropping to 20°C at night. The North Coast will continue to have cooler weather, with temperatures peaking at just 26°C before slightly dropping to 24°C at night, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Is digital marketing in danger?

The great marketing shift. Advancements in artificial intelligence mean that digital marketing as we know it today is swiftly on its way out, according to Forbes. With most search engines veering away from traditional search result rankings in favor of AI-driven results, digital marketing is losing its anchor — search engine optimization.

Rewriting the rules. Traditional browsers are slowly exiting the scene as AI platforms take their spot. Case in point: Apple is reportedly considering acquiring Perplexity in a bid to prioritize AI search after Safari searches fell for the first time ever in April 2024. Samsung and Google are also reported to be parting ways as Samsung seeks to incorporate Perplexity as its default search engine over Google. Not even the big players are safe from the tumults of AI — so what’s the future of marketing going to look like?

By 2028, three out of five marketing jobs will be handled by AI, according to IDC’s Worldwide Chief Marketing Officer 2025 Predictions report (pdf). Traditional agencies are predicted to reduce staff by 55% by 2028, allocating sources to AI contractors and AI services. The report notes that by next year, 65% of individuals will conduct search primarily through AI, pushing marketers and agencies to optimize for AI, and not traditional search. Agencies are also predicted to spend up to five times more on LLM optimization by 2029.

What does LLM optimization look like? In Google’s AI Mode — and other AI search platforms — answers are fused together from multiple sources with no direct citation. This makes SEO redundant, and thus the end goal for brands becomes being directly featured in AI responses. How often your brand is mentioned is the new criteria — and companies are already deploying software to track the nature and extent of AI mentions, and take action accordingly.

It’s time to rethink your strategy. If the only way you’re getting the word out on your business is through keyword placement, that’s no longer enough. AI tends to source text that is clear, informative, and sounds trustworthy (and human). Digital content should prioritize depth, quality, and readability over ranking. Public forums such as reddit — and similar online communities — have proven to be fertile ground for web crawlers feeding LLMs, and are platforms worth strategically exploring when it comes to content marketing.

Just because digital marketing as we know it is changing forever, doesn’t mean you should call it quits. Around 80% of business schools worldwide have already begun integrating AI into their curricula — with many offering post-graduate courses. With up to 70% of all job skills expected to change by 2030, according to LinkedIn’s 2025 Work Change Report (pdf), now proves the time to upskill, re-calibrate, and move quickly.

Searching for the Phoenicians

?Who were the Phoenicians? Josephine Quinn’s 360-page In Search of the Phoenicians overturns our traditional understanding of these ancient peoples, shows why they have been so mischaracterised, and attempts to uncover their true nature. A whole lot is revealed about the ancient communities that occupied stretches of the coastline between modern day Lebanon and Syria.

No really, who were they? The question is surprisingly fraught with confusion. You see, traditional academia has treated the Phoenicians as a singular homogenous nation that existed from before 1200 BCE well into the CEs. But Quinn meticulously takes the reader on a journey through the centuries to show that no such Phoenician nation ever existed. Instead, the citizens of such cities as Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos in Lebanon, in addition to Carthage in Tunisia identified with their cities and families alone.

How the concept of a Phoenician nation was born: The most absorbing section of the book discusses the mechanisms behind Phoenicia’s birth. From the “New Phoenicianism” movement in a newly-independent Lebanon to the Roman Empire — each built a mythical past of the land to help create a new state unified in shared history.

A detail-heavy read: Those with a keen eye for the minutiae will appreciate this book. The pages are populated with primary evidence: modern political speeches, ancient inscriptions, coins, and burial sites. The author takes your hand through her expert analysis of the evidence, leaving the reader with an acute appreciation for the Phoenician story.

One last chance for the African and Arab clubs

Your daily update on the Club World Cup. Boca Juniors’ journey ended early at the hands of Benfica and Bayern Munich, whereas Espérance continued the Arab clubs’ unlucky streak after losing to Chelsea, who qualified alongside Flamengo.

Group C: Portugal’s Benfica ended its group stage in the lead with seven points after a 1-0 victory over Germany’s Bayern Munich, surpassing the Bavarian giant. Bayern — despite its loss — advanced to the next stage as the group’s runner-up with six points. Bayern managed to get ahead of Boca Juniors, who — alongside Auckland City — left the field with a 1-1 draw.

Group D: Flamengo is in the group’s lead with seven points without suffering any losses. The Brazilian club secured victory over England’s Chelsea and Tunisia’s Espérance, and left the field with a one-all draw against Los Angeles. The Blues secured the group’s second spot with six points after defeating Tunisia’s Espérance 3-0.

The group stage concludes. The fate of Groups E, F, G, and H will be decided over the course of the night and the long weekend. In Groups E and F, six teams are vying for qualification, whereas in group G, Manchester City and Juventus have guaranteed advancement. Group H remains anyone’s game.

Group E: Italy’s Inter Milan faces off with Argentina’s River Plate in an intense match at 4am. Both clubs are in their group’s lead with four points each, with River Plate at a slight advantage on goal difference.

Mexico’s Monterrey will play against Japan’s Urawa Reds at the same time. The Mexican FC has only managed to accrue two points, with the Japanese FC already out of the running. The match is crucial for Monterrey, who has no choice but to secure victory to get five points.

Group F: Brazil’s Fluminense is in the lead with four points, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. South Africa’s Sundowns are in third place with three points. The Brazilians of Africa have no option other than securing victory over Fluminese to secure qualification tonight at 10pm. A loss or a draw means official elimination.

Borussia Dortmund goes head-to-head with Ulsan HD at 10pm. Dortmund is currently in second place in Group H with four points. A draw would result in its qualification, yet the club seeks victory to secure the group’s lead.

Group G: Juventus and Manchester City are battling it out for the top spot after having secured early qualification with six points each. The match will take place on Thursday at 10pm. Juventus is at an advantage on goal difference, having secured nine goals against only one. Pep Guardiola’s squad has scored eight goals without conceding any. A draw would give Juventus the top spot, whereas Manchester City has no choice but to secure victory.

Al Ain and Wydad face off in a consolation match. In a match lacking any qualification stakes, Emirati club Al Ain will play against Moroccan club Wydad at 10pm on Thursday. Both teams have been eliminated with zero points after two defeats each. Despite both clubs being out of the running, the face-off represents an opportunity to secure victory and avoid finishing at the bottom.

Group H: Saudi club Al Hilal will go head-to-head with Mexico’s Pachuca on Friday at 4am, with its sights set on a qualification spot for the next round. A victory for Al Hilal would raise its points to a total of five, but the Saudi club would need the other match to end with a victory for either Real Madrid or Salzburg.

Spain vs. Austria. Real Madrid and Salzburg will also face off on Friday at 4am. Both clubs are in the lead with four points, but Real Madrid is at an advantage on goal difference. A victory would mean Real Madrid would advance regardless of the other match’s results.

Palmeiras and Botafogo meet in the round of 16. The two Brazilian giants will clash on Saturday at 7pm. Palmeiras secured the top spot in Group A with 5 points, whereas Botafogo was Group B’s runner-up with six points.

A European showdown. Audiences are eagerly anticipating a strong European face-off between Portugal’ Benfica and England’s Chelsea on Saturday at 11pm. The Eagles topped Group C with six points, whereas The Blues were Group D’s runner-ups with six points.
