WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: Debt swap program with Italy gets extended + Turkish elections are still dominating the front pages of the foreign press

Good afternoon, friends. We’ve just wrapped up our Enterprise Exports and FDI forum minutes before hitting “send” on this afternoon’s edition of EnterprisePM. Keep an eye out for exclusive coverage of the event and our insightful discussions in tomorrow morning’s editions of EnterpriseAM and Enterprise Logistics.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Our debt swap program with Italy could get an extension: The USD 100 mn third phase of the Italian-Egyptian debt-for-development swap program could be extended to December 2024, after International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat and Ambassador of Italy to Cairo Michele Michele Quaroni signed letters of intent earlier today, according to a ministry statement. The extension seeks to ensure the completion of all projects under the program’s third phase, whose 11-year term was initially scheduled to end this month.

Debt swap? The debt swap agreement allows Egypt to channel its debts into development projects instead of paying back the Italian government.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The Turkish elections are still dominating the front pages of the foreign press, as the country braces for a run-off on 28 May after the two candidates failed to receive the 50% of the vote needed for victory. The latest count saw President Recep Tayyip Erdogan receiving 49.4% of the vote, while his main rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu received 45.0% during yesterday’s election results. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Some drugs are being sold in the US without a full trial + Who ever said the sun was yellow?

US pharma firms are cashing in on unapproved treatments and raking in bns thanks to an FDA shortcut, Bloomberg reports. The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) accelerated approval pathway allows pharma companies to sell medications before conclusive trials are completed, especially in situations where patients have no other treatment options and where initial studies point to their likely success. This has raised concerns that some firms are misusing the shortcut to market ineffective drugs. A drug used to treat muscular dystrophy — a disease affecting young children — has raked in over USD 2.5 bn in sales despite a lack of evidence for its efficacy, and some 19 drugs that have yet to complete their confirmatory trials are currently being distributed under accelerated approvals, according to Bloomberg data.

The FDA’s trying to get them to finish their trials quicker — but it hasn’t been successful: The FDA has attempted to tackle these concerns in recent years, demanding in a new law that companies carry out additional trials in a timely fashion to substantiate the efficacy of their drugs. This has resulted in a number of drugs losing their accelerated approval. But the FDA’s new law does not completely eliminate the possibility of delayed trials and leaves some details up to interpretation, one physician said. Drugmakers can appeal a proposed withdrawal to the FDA commissioner, but details of how the process would work are unclear.

People can’t decide on the color of the sun: The sun is neither yellow nor white, that’s just the way our brain interprets it, scientists agreed in an article by the Washington Post last week. A debate sparked on Twitter about the color of the sun and whether it has changed over the years is working to disprove a commonly held belief that colors are facts, instead of being subjective. While our eyes capture the same wavelengths when we look at the sun, our interpretations of what we see are different based on our cultures, language and place of birth. The thickness of the atmosphere at different times of day also changes the way molecules are scattered, affecting its color, according to W. Dean Pesnell, a scientist at NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory,

The sun is actually green, Pesnell said, adding that the shade of green is so bright that our eyes cannot take in the intensity, which causes us to see it as white.

Meet Cute: Time travel, sci-fi, and mental health all packed in one rom-com

? ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

Meet Cute takes an unorthodox approach to time travel: Starring Pete Davidson as Gary and Kaley Cuoco as Sheila, Meet Cute is a dark romantic comedy film with sci-fi elements and a slightly deeper undertone as it touches on themes of trauma and depression. The story begins with Gary and Sheila on a pleasant — albeit demure — first date, which Sheila soon confesses is actually the seventh time she has experienced that first date. After their (actual first) first date, Sheila had a good enough time, and was at a low enough point mentally and emotionally, that she used a time travel machine to go back and relive that same day as she chased that rush of happiness. The film challenges the notion of wanting to go back in time to “fix” certain details, as well as the idea that constantly reliving a happy moment can be eternally fulfilling. You can watch Meet Cute on Amazon Prime.

The English Premier League’s Gameweek 36 wraps today with a single game, with Leicester City facing off against Liverpool at King Power Stadium at 10pm tonight. Leicester City is hoping to snag three points from a victory to push it up to 17th place in the league and allow it to avoid relegation, while the Reds are still chasing a qualifying spot for the Champions League.

And in the Egyptian League: Al Masry v El Dakhlia kicks off at 7pm, followed by Enppi v Al Ittihad Al Sakandary at 9:30pm.

? EAT THIS TONIGHT-

Gouna people, this one’s for you: Gouna pizzeria Zia Amelia has branched out of its home by the Red Sea to bring its authentic Italian dishes to the capital city. The restaurant will be operating out of a cloud kitchen in east Cairo, offering its signature dishes for delivery, founder Riccardo announced earlier this week. We’re typically partial to the classics at Zia Amelia, including its bufalina, diavola, and quattro stagioni pizzas, but the restaurant also makes a spectacular lasagna that’s (probably) just as good as any Italian nonna’s.

? UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

English by Sanaz Toossi follows the story about four individuals in Iran as they work on learning English after being separated from their families and facing travel restrictions in the country. The new language is symbolic of an entirely new identity and forging a new life for themselves, with Toossi examining the underlying power of language in shaping our identities. The Iranian-American writer also embeds the hypothesis that learning a second tongue acts as somewhat of a noose for the identities humans have from their native tongues. The play earned the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
