THIS EVENING: Inflation cools down in April + Are we getting another downgrade from Moody’s?

Good afternoon, nice people, and happy almost-THURSDAY to us all. Today’s news cycle is heavily dominated by economy-focused stories, both here at home and in the international press.

We’re only five days away from meeting with some of you at the Enterprise Exports and FDI Forum, taking place at the Four Seasons at the Nile Plaza on Monday, 15 May.

We’re proud to announce that our friend Karim Abou Ghali, chairman and CEO of Pasta Regina, is joining us for the forum. Are you? Karim Abou Ghali is going to be sharing his secret sauce (no pun intended) for how he grew his exports. He will be joined on stage by Mark Wyllie, CEO of Beyti, and Hossam Sallab, CEO and vice-chairman of Sallab Group and Royal Ceramica who will discuss the fundamentals for setting up an export business and an FDI strategy.

More speakers to come: Among the CEOs, top execs, bankers, and development finance folks speaking at the conference are (in no particular order): Yasmine Khamis, chair of the Orientals Group; Tarek Kamel, CEO of Nestle Egypt; Omar Elsahy, general manager of Amazon Egypt, Khaled Morsy, CEO of DB Schenker Egypt; Shady William, managing director of IDG; Mohamed Talaat Khalifa, CEO of Concrete; Abdallah Sallam, CEO of Madinet Masr; Tarek Hosny, head of investments and projects at Fertiglobe; Nadia El-Tawil, investment officer at AfricInvest; Mostafa Bedair, CEO of Giza Seeds and Herbs; Helmy Ghazi, deputy CEO of HSBC Egypt; Nada El Ahwal, CSO of Transmar; Hassan Massoud, associate director and head of private equity (Southern Mediterranean) at the EBRD; Cheick-Oumar Sylla, director for North Africa and the Horn of Africa at the IFC; Hossam Abou Moussa of partner at Apis; Yassir Zouaoui, partner at McKinsey; and Mohamed El Gebely, Team Leader at USAID Trade.

Topics and live interviews will include:

  • Why exports and FDI are the way forward and what lessons have worked from around the world;
  • How to attract foreign partners and figure out what they are looking for;
  • What lessons can we draw from white goods, fertilizers, and garments exporters who have increased our exports;
  • What are the fundamentals to creating an export and / or FDI strategy;
  • How industrial clusters could expedite exports and FDI and is a possibly avenue for SME development;
  • How Egypt’s industries need to be open to evolution to become more competitive.

THE BIG STORIES TODAY

#1- Inflation eased in April for the first time since June 2022, thanks to a slowdown in food price growth and a favorable base effect. Annual urban inflation in April came in at 30.6%, cooling down from 32.7% the month before, according to figures from Capmas.

#2- Another Moody’s downgrade coming? Moody’s has placed Egypt’s long term local- and foreign-currency issuer ratings “on review for downgrade,” due to “increasing liquidity and debt affordability risks,” according to a press release (pdf). This comes a few months after the ratings agency in February cut Egypt’s rating to B3.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The international business press is leading this afternoon with two stories coming out of the US: Upcoming inflation data and the continued standoff over the country’s debt ceiling. Analysts and economists are broadly expecting US inflation to have remained “stubbornly high” in April, with the market keeping an eye on inflation figures due out later today. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

China plays PacMan with EV market share + Is Messi following CR7 to KSA?

China’s share of the global electric vehicle market is booming, with Chinese-manufactured EVs growing their footprint even in countries that manufacture their own EVs, according to the Associated Press. China’s EV growth comes as EVs are accounting for a larger share of the broader automotive market, as China-made EVs offer cutting-edge technology at more affordable price points. BYD Auto is among a number of Chinese EV automakers ramping up their efforts to compete with Western and Japanese car brands in their home markets, although the current political climate has made it challenging for Chinese companies to plant a flag in the US, a GlobalData analyst tells the AP.

The competition intensifies between BYD Auto and Tesla: BYD Auto sold 1.86 mn electric and plug-in hybrid cars in 2022, which is more than the last four years of sales combined. Half of its sales were battery-only EVs. Tesla, on the other hand, sold 1.3 mn EVs, Bloomberg reports. BYD Auto has established itself in European markets through partnerships with dealership chains in countries including the UK, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Is Messi going to Saudi? Argentina’s Lionel Messi could join his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi league next season for undisclosed megabucks, AFP reports, citing a source with knowledge of the matter. Qatar-owned French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) — where Messi currently plays — neither confirmed nor denied the news, but did note that the football star’s contract expires on 30 June. Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo signed a two year contract in January with Saudi-based Al Nasser club for an annual salary of c.EUR 200 mn after leaving Manchester United in November, making him the highest paid player in football history.

? UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is the quintessential summer read for fans of the World Wars. The events are set between Saint-Malo, a small, walled beach city in France that was flattened during World War II and several locations in Germany and the Western front. We receive a retelling of the war from the perspective of two children growing up on opposite sides of the conflict and being drawn to each other in a most unusual way — the radio. As an orphan growing up in a mining town in Germany, Werner and his sister Jutta find an escape from their mundane lives through a French radio station that broadcasts lectures on philosophy and plays classical music as opposed to the propaganda that dominated German radio. In France, Marie-Laure is the daughter of the Head Locksmith of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, who lost her mother when she was born and lost her sight by the age of 6. As the war loomed closer, Marie-Laure’s father sent her to his uncle in Saint-Malo, and gave her another miniature of the city for her to freely navigate. As she spends time exploring Saint-Malo she discovers two secrets, a radio locked up in her grand uncle's attic that broadcasts every night and a treasure inside her miniature of Saint-Malo.

This book was written as an homage to Saint-Malo, a city whose horizon has changed completely since WWII, the strides technology took during the war, the radio, and its impact on the outcomes of the war. The short chapters, leaps in narrative, and true historical references make this novel an absolute page-turner.
