Maadi and Nasr City’s Pane is what fried chicken dreams are made of

🥪 The pleasures of life are simple: a sweet late-summer breeze, a warm cup of milk tea, and, last but not least, a nice chicken pane sandwich. Pane knows this, and they’ve built their entire business around it. Having launched this summer on the North Coast in Masyaf and Ballah, the newly minted sandwich-maker set up shop with cloud kitchens in Maadi and Nasr City. Naturally, we had to give it a shot.

What to expect: Pane offers exactly what it says on the tin: pane sandwiches. If the workday has left you with an extreme aversion to decision-making, then rest assured that you won’t have to trouble your prefrontal cortex, seeing as the menu only features two — yes, two — items: the sandwich and fries. That’s it. You can order an individual brioche bun, a pack of four, or a pack of eight. Fries, naturally, should complete the equation, and there are pickles too if you’d like to have a party.

What we liked: Pane was at our doorstep faster than we could guess why the chicken crossed the road. The sandwiches were hot and fresh, and so were the fries. We got to feasting. One bite in, and we were in love. This isn’t your average fried chicken sandwich — Pane’s chicken tastes genuinely homemade. If there’s anything to compare it to, it would be Bon Appetit’s classic chicken pane sandwich. Where both establishments differ is that Pane is as basic as it gets: brioche buns, lettuce, mayo, and the cutlet.

What we didn’t like: Packaging could have been a little more careful, seeing as the sandwiches were more squished than visually acceptable. Portions were a bit of an issue too, with each sandwich comfortably finished in one-and-a-half to two bites — though at EGP 75 a pop, we weren’t too surprised.

The verdict: This is still some really good, homemade pane, folks, and if you’re looking for a quick bite with virtually zero time spent on sifting through a menu, we’d urge you to go for it. Just get a pack of four at minimum, as less than that would probably leave you craving more.
