🍜 On one of our recent walks through Maadi, we came across a restaurant we were fairly certain we hadn’t seen before: Lan Noodles Bar. Something about it pulled us in — no prior planning, just instinct — and as it turned out, that instinct served us well. From the atmosphere and the Chinese chef visibly at work in the open kitchen to the smell of the food coming out of it, first impressions were good.
First impressions: Seating is split between tables and a bar facing the narrow street outside. Despite it not being a weekend, the restaurant was busy enough to pique our curiosity. We took two bar seats and picked up the menu. The restaurant specializes in Lanzhou-style Chinese noodles — made in-house by the chefs and available in a range of thicknesses — alongside fried noodles, dumplings with various fillings, and a handful of sides.
What we ordered: We went with the Lanzhou beef noodles and the fried chicken noodles, opting for thick noodles in both cases on the waiter’s recommendation. Both arrived around 20 minutes later — hot, and generously portioned. Before we even tasted anything, we found ourselves taken by the presentation: the bowls themselves, the noodles, the small details. The Lanzhou beef was a large noodle soup with cuts of beef, chili sauce, and plenty of spring onion. The fried chicken was stir-fried noodles with chicken pieces, onion, carrot, and seasoning.
What we liked: The portion size was the first thing that stood out — genuinely filling. The beef was good, and the chili sauce added a kick the broth would have lacked without. The fried noodles were the stronger of the two: well-cooked, well-seasoned, with a clear and confident flavor — though we felt the chicken pieces could have been more generous. As for the house-made noodles themselves, they impressed in both preparations, fried and boiled.
Our verdict: Service can be slow on busier nights — the team is small — but the overall experience held up well. Food quality was high, portions were generous relative to the price, and the presentation and small details rounded things out nicely. It didn’t take us long to decide we’d be going back.
