Prime Video’s Ride or Die has friendship, firearms, and fantastic chemistry

📺 If there’s one thing Prime Video’s latest series Ride or Die proves, it’s that you’re never too old to discover that your best friend has been hiding a very dark secret. In this case, that secret happens to be that she’s an internationally trained elite assassin. Starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham, the eight-episode series combines action, mystery, comedy, and plenty of globe-trotting chaos with something far more wholesome at its core: a two-decade friendship that refuses to fall apart.

The plot: Debbie (Spencer) has settled into a seemingly ordinary life in London. She’s married to a member of the British Parliament, and effectively keeps her husband’s political operation running behind the scenes. Her best friend Judith (Waddingham), meanwhile, is a freespirit with a secret life that couldn’t be further from Debbie’s world: she works as an international assassin.

When Judith is sent after a member of a crime syndicate, things quickly go sideways, forcing her secret life into the open. Debbie is dragged into a world of assassins, elusive targets, and dangerous conspiracies as the pair travel across Europe in an attempt to uncover the truth — and stay alive in the process — all while a mysterious figure hunts Judith, adding another layer to an already complicated adventure.

What we liked: The heart of Ride or Die is its central friendship. The show gives both women room to exist beyond the action, exploring their histories, vulnerabilities, and the experiences that have kept them together for 20 years. Judith may look like the unshakable femme fatale, but Waddingham brings an unexpectedly vulnerable side to her character. Spencer is equally fantastic, giving Debbie plenty of wit and bravery as she’s thrown headfirst into a life she never expected. The chemistry between the two actresses is what makes the show’s more ridiculous situations feel surprisingly believable.

The action sequences are slick and well-shot, the European locations give the series a glossy, adventurous feel, and the costume design cleverly reflects the transformation from Debbie’s everyday life to her new reality. The soundtrack is also stacked, moving from Dua Lipa and Robyn to Salt-N-Pepa and Doja Cat, alongside a selection of Spanish and French tracks.

Our verdict: Ride or Die is exactly the kind of series that knows how to have fun without losing sight of its characters. It’s fast-paced, stylish, and genuinely fun. With Spencer and Waddingham proving to be an excellent duo, Ride or Die makes for an easy, entertaining binge-watch.
