Hearty urban French croques at Maadi’s Croq

Croq dishes out a handful of deliciously filling urban-style sandwiches

🥖 French-style sandwiches? If they haven’t crossed your radar yet, new-on-the-block sandwich spot Croq is here to change that. Putting their own take on the traditional ham-and-cheese croque monsieur, Croq dishes out a handful of deliciously filling, urban-style sandwiches.

What’s on the menu? Croq’s menu is an easy-pick type, boasting only four sandwiches, a small but — as we discovered later — mighty line-up. The focaccia bread sandwiches playfully take after the names of popular French cities: the chicken and mushroom sauce Paris sammie, the tandoori chicken Lyon sammie, the chicken and creamy cheese sauce Strasbourg sammie, and the three-beef patty Marseille sammie. A side of fries and a soda come with a combo order. A small cheese crepe line-up also features on the menu alongside a sweet crepe selection.

What we ordered: Following quick deliberation, we opted for the Lyon and the Strasbourg chicken sandwiches, with fries and soda. Glazed in a striking pinkish red, the Lyon was a no-brainer for us solely on account of its color — and the unexpected appearance of Indian tandoori on the French-first menu.

What we enjoyed: We were pleased to find the taste lived up to the visuals. Both the focaccia sandwiches came in generous portions, packed to the brim. The red chicken stood out with its almost-fruity balance of sweet and savory flavor, pairing well with the melted American cheese. The Strasbourg offered a milder flavor profile with well-seasoned chicken and a cheese mix that delivered a rich bite. The generous portions of chicken were more than welcome, though they occasionally broke through the fresh bread in the Strasbourg, making for a slightly messy experience.

The fries delivered a classic McDonald’s-adjacent crispiness and flavor we couldn’t help but appreciate. Overall, the sandwiches left us more than full. That said, unless you’re particularly hungry, we’d recommend ordering just one sammie to avoid slipping into a full-blown food coma.

Our verdict: For Maadi dwellers, Croq is the perfect go-to for ordering in when you’re craving a freshly made, filling sandwich. Even if you’re out and about, stopping by their booth is worth it. All in all, we can confidently say Croq delivers reliably delicious sandwiches — and we’re only hoping to see their menu potentially expand.
