Argentina face England tonight for a place in the World Cup final

⚽ Can the Three Lions book their place in the final? Tonight’s second World Cup semi-final gets underway at Atlanta Stadium, where defending champions Argentina face England at 10pm for a place in Sunday’s final against Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium. It’s the first meeting between the two sides at a World Cup since 2002, when a David Beckham penalty settled it.

Argentina are counting on captain Lionel Messi, who has never faced England but leads the tournament’s scoring charts with eight goals, having steered his side through an eventful knockout run: a 3-2 victory over Cape Verde, a 3-2 comeback against Egypt, and a 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland.

England, meanwhile, are chasing their first World Cup final appearance since they lifted the trophy in 1966. Jude Bellingham is the driving force, having scored braces against both Mexico and Norway to become the first player to score in consecutive knockout rounds since Diego Maradona in 1986. Harry Kane matches him with six tournament goals.

La Roja are through to the final. Spain secured their place with a comfortable 2-0 victory over France yesterday, in a match that showcased Spain at their most commanding and France at their most toothless. Mikel Oyarzabal opened from the penalty spot before Pedro Burro doubled the lead in the 58th minute. Spain’s defensive record remains the tournament’s standout: one goal conceded in six matches, with their backline nullifying France’s attack of Mbappe, Olise, Dembele, and Doue.

France’s attempt to become the first side to reach three consecutive World Cup finals is over. They move to next Saturday’s third-place play-off, which will be Didier Deschamps’ last match in charge. Spain, meanwhile, are chasing a second world title — 16 years after their only previous final appearance, at the 2010 World Cup.
