? UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-
Lady Tan's Circle of Women is a work of historical fiction by author Lisa See whose bibliography includes novels like The Island of Sea Women and China Dolls. In her latest title, See invites us to embark on a journey through time and space: The story is set during the Ming Dynasty in 15th-century China where two young women, Yunxian, granddaughter to one of China’s very few female physicians, and Meiling, as they join forces to help other women navigate through and overcome their illnesses during a time where male physicians could only do so much. But despite their best efforts, the mores of their culture get in the way and the women, ironically, are stifled by another woman as Yunxian’s mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and focusing her efforts instead on fulfilling more traditional roles as a wife and mother. What follows is a story of determination and perseverance against difficult odds as Yunxian discovers ways to be able to overcome the social obstacles and fulfill her calling of treating women of all social classes.
