? UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

English by Sanaz Toossi follows the story about four individuals in Iran as they work on learning English after being separated from their families and facing travel restrictions in the country. The new language is symbolic of an entirely new identity and forging a new life for themselves, with Toossi examining the underlying power of language in shaping our identities. The Iranian-American writer also embeds the hypothesis that learning a second tongue acts as somewhat of a noose for the identities humans have from their native tongues. The play earned the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
