Good morning, friends, and a very happy long weekend to you all. We’ve got much to look forward to as the holy month draws to a close and the Eid holiday begins. In the meantime, read on for a recap on the latest news this week, including the latest growth figures from the government, the lowdown on the state’s draft budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and a surge in foreign holdings of public debt.

Ramadan brings with its blessings a wealth of cultural moments that deserve recognition. From entertainment that captivates our evenings to the delicacies that break our fasts, our Ramadan superlatives list showcases the standouts of the holy month.

We hope the next few days are restful for everybody- The public and private sectors will have Saturday to either Tuesday or Wednesday off for Eid El Fitr depending on when Eid officially starts. Banks and the EGX will be off from Sunday through Tuesday, while schools will be off for the entire week.

Enterprise Weekend comes out each Friday at 9:00am CLT. Our team will be getting some much needed R&R over Eid, and we’ll be back on Sunday, 6 April at 6am with EnterpriseAM Egypt. Until then: Enjoy the weekend, and happy Eid in advance.

LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

ECONOMY-

Growth almost doubled y-o-y in 2Q FY 2024-25 to 4.3%, up from 2.3% during the same period last year. The government attributes the recovery to a combination of “continued structural reforms” and “stringent governance of public investment.” The growth comes despite a 70% fall in Suez Canal revenues during the quarter as well as the continued contraction in the energy sector.

BUDGET WATCH-

Cabinet approves FY 25-26 budget: The Madbouly cabinet greenlit the draft budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026. The state is targeting a primary surplus of EGP 795 bn — or 4% of GDP — and reducing the public debt to 82.9% next fiscal year, as well as trimming the debt-to-GDP ratio to below 92%.

Revenues and expenses on the rise: Next year’s budget pencils a 19% y-o-y jump in revenues to EGP 3.1 tn and a 18% y-o-y rise in expenses to EGP 4.6 tn. The budget sees increased spending on education, healthcare, social protection, and support to export-oriented sectors.

Among the highlights: The state has allocated EGP 732.6 bn (up 15.2%) to social security, EGP 78.1 bn to support productive, export-oriented, and tourism activities, EGP 22 bn to medicine, and EGP 679.1 bn to public sector salaries, among other expenses.

DEBT WATCH-

Foreign investors have significantly increased their purchases of government debt, leading to a resurgence in hot money inflows following a slight blip at the beginning of the month. Foreign holdings of public debt have returned to their pre-December levels, reaching approximately USD 38 bn, on the back of easing inflation and expectations of an April rate cut. Last week alone saw foreign investors buy over USD 2 bn in government debt instruments.

CUSTOMS-

The government has formed new committees to address the effects of Trump’s tariffs. The committees are tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of Egypt’s customs to adapt to recent global developments and, particularly, the tariffs imposed by some countries in response to US tariffs. The committees will focus on protecting local manufacturing, ensuring international agreements are fulfilled without compromising Egypt’s localization strategy.

INVESTMENT WATCH-

#1- Ain Sokhna is getting a USD 1.7 bn industrial complex: China’s Wu’an Xin Feng signed the contract for its USD 1.7 bn integrated metal industries complex in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone with the government. The project will be set up over a five-year period and across two phases and once fully completed, it will offer 8k direct jobs. The complex will house nine industrial projects and two comprehensive service centers, with phase one slated for completion in 2027.

CAPITAL MARKETS-

Beltone Holding (closed the first round) of its blockbuster EGP 10.8 bn capital increase. The rights issue of c. 5.4 bn shares was 92.11% covered by investors during the first phase of subscription, which ended on Monday. The total increase will see Beltone’s capital rise to EGP 21.7 bn, marking one of the largest ever capital increases on the EGX.

PRIVATIZATION WATCH-

The IFC is out with the list of airports set for private investment: The International Finance Corporation (IFC) unveiled the list of 11 Egyptian airports slated for development through public-private partnerships (PPPs). The first phase of the program includes airports like Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor, and Sphinx, but notably excludes Cairo International Airport. The IFC will advise the government on PPPs to help it carry out its plans to upgrade airport infrastructure and services with the help of private players.

ENERGY-

Egypt’s gas production falls to 8-year low in January: Gas output dropped 20% y-o-y to 4.3 bn cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in January, its lowest monthly level since December 2016, as production from major regions like West Delta and the onshore Nile Delta slid. The decline comes despite new wells from BP’s second phase at Raven field coming online, but recovery could be imminent with Dana Gas’ planned launch of a USD 100 mn project.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

It was a tumultuous week in the international press, with the latest Trump tariffs rattling global markets, Israel continuing to pound Gaza, and anti-Hamas protests erupting across the strip.

Trump set the wheels in motion on his auto tariffs: US President Donald Trump said that a 25% tariff on all imported cars and light trucks will come into effect on 3 April, framing the move as a step to revive the domestic auto industry and raise revenues to support his tax cut agenda. Global automaker stocks plunged following the news — a combined EUR 4.5 bn was wiped off shares in Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche on Thursday, while Japanese stocks lost USD 16.5 bn overnight.

The move sparked backlash and threats of retaliation from foreign governments. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen slammed the tariffs as "bad for businesses, worse for consumers," while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the move as a “direct attack,” asserting that the country would defend itself against it.

Over in Gaza, Israeli airstrikes killed two senior Hamas leaders and tens of civilians in between Saturday and Sunday in a renewed escalation of the war, with Hamas reporting the deaths of political bureau member Ismail Barhoum and top political figure Salah Al Bardaweel.

Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets across Gaza in a rare wave of anti-Hamas protests, demanding the group relinquish control of the territory to help end the war with Israel.

Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire in the Black Sea following days of US-backed talks in Riyadh.

IN THE BUSINESS PAGES- German software company SAP has become Europe’s most valuable public company, overtaking Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk, with a market cap of USD 342.4 bn.

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

Your guide to the best of Ramadan 2025

Ramadan brings not just spiritual fulfillment, but also some of the year’s most exciting entertainment, delicious food, and memorable moments. So what made Ramadan extra special this year? Here’s our roundup of standouts.

#1- ACTOR OF THE MONTH

Behind every compelling Ramadan drama is a performer whose talent brings stories to life. This category celebrates the performer who had us glued to our TVs night after night, delivering unforgettable scenes that became the talk of family gatherings and social media alike.

BEST ACTOR: Diab — Albi W Moftaho

Diab stood out amongst other protagonists as As’ad, a controlling man with a larger-than-life presence who we all loved to hate. His convincing performance kept audiences glued to their screens throughout the month.

HONORABLE MENTION: Mohamed Shahine — Lam Shamsiyya

Taking this challenging of a role was a bold decision, adding to Shahine’s diverse repertoire. His portrayal of Wessam, a psychologically disturbed molester, was as exceptional as it was disturbing, making for a performance worthy of recognition.

#2- ACTRESS OF THE MONTH

There was no shortage of charm, depth, and talent on our screens this year from the leading ladies of Ramadan. This title goes to the actress whose performance captivated audiences throughout the holy month, whether through comedy that had us laughing between bites, or drama that kept us hooked until suhoor.

BEST ACTRESS: Hoda El Mufti — 80 Bako

El Mofti brought Bosy to life with refreshing — and surprising — authenticity. Playing a struggling girl from humble beginnings, El Mutfi managed to be relatable without falling into stereotypes or overacting — a balance that made her performance stand out in a crowded field.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Kinda Alloush — Ekhwati and Entisar — 80 Bako

The women really shone this season both in front and behind the camera. Alloush as Nahed in Ekhwati and Entisar as Lola in 80 Bako both delivered memorable performances.

#3- BREAKOUT TALENT

Ramadan is prime time to introduce fresh faces to the pantheon of Egyptian talent. This category spotlights the newcomer who burst onto the scene this Ramadan, immediately winning hearts and establishing themselves as stars to watch in the coming years.

BREAKTHROUGH TALENT: Donia Sami — 80 Bako, Nos El Sha’b Esmo Mohamed, El Nos, Kamel El ‘Adad++

Sami proved herself to be an endearing actress with perfect comic timing with multiple appearances throughout Ramadan, including Faten in 80 Bako, Naglaa in Nos El Sha’b Esmo Mohamed, and Ayesha in El Nos. Even her brief appearance in Kamel El ‘Adad++ had the audience laughing and entertained.

HONORABLE MENTION: Ali El Beili — Lam Shamsiyya

Child actor Ali El Beili stole scenes as Youssef, impressing everyone with his range and exceptional talent. His performance matched those of the seasoned professionals by his side, and brought a sincerity and innocence that touched viewers’ hearts.

#4- BEST COMEDY

Ramadan TV is practically a competitive sport, with networks and streaming platforms bringing their A-game, and audiences planning their evenings around must-watch programs. This title goes to the show that brought genuine laughs to our tables, featuring characters we couldn’t help but love, and made waiting for iftar a little easier.

WINNER: 80 Bako

This show masterfully balanced light comedy with meaningful social drama, becoming something of an emotional rollercoaster each episode. The comedic elements shined thanks to talented performers like Rahma Ahmed, Khaled Mokhtar, and stand-up comedian Walid El Maghazi.

HONORABLE MENTION:Ashghal Shaqa Gedan

Ashghal Shaqa continued its successful run for its second year in the Ramadan lineup. Mostafa Gharib’s character Arabi continued to be a fan favorite, thrilling audiences who couldn’t get enough of his spontaneity, improvisational skills, and sharp humor.

#5- BEST DRAMA

This award goes to the series that delivered the most compelling storylines, complex characters, and emotional moments that had us texting friends and family with theories and reactions after every episode.

WINNERS: Zolm El Mastaba and Lam Shamsiyya

This season featured exceptional storytelling. Lam Shamsiyya tackled the often-silenced issue of child molestation with sensitivity and care. Equally powerful was Zolm El Mastaba, which made a strong impact with its realistic portrayal of negative social inheritances through a gripping narrative.

#6- WORST TV SHOW

Not every Ramadan series can be a winner. This category recognizes the show that — despite big budgets, star power, or heavy promotion — just didn’t deliver. Whether it was disappointing storylines, wooden acting, or simply a premise that we couldn’t take seriously, this is a program we all watched just to complain about later.

WINNER: El Atawla

Al Atawla transformed from being an engaging blend of drama and farcical comedy in season one to a chaotic absurdist venture in season two. Despite clear attempts to spark viral buzz, the show struggled to maintain online traction beyond the few first episodes. The creators abandoned narrative coherence, instead relying on increasingly desperate inside jokes and improvised sequences that rarely landed.

#7- BEST RAMADAN COMMERCIAL

The ads that run during Ramadan can sometimes be better than the programs they interrupt. This category honors the commercial that won our hearts, made us laugh, or moved us to tears.

WINNER: B.Laban

B.Laban broke the mold with a refreshingly unconventional ad featuring beloved comedian Akram Hosny as brand ambassador. Rather than following the traditional playbook of family gatherings and nostalgia, the brand (watch, runtime: 1:25) took a boldly iconic stance — apologizing for their overwhelming success. Hosny’s signature charm saw the ad quickly go viral, earning 8.6 mn views on YouTube and 19.8 mn on TikTok. By celebrating its quirks and claiming its position as an industry trend-setter, B.Laban created one of the season's most distinctive and effective advertisements this Ramadan.

#8- BEST OPENING THEME

It’s not often you watch through the opening credits instead of skipping them, and the tunes that created the perfect mood for the episodes that followed, from haunting melodies to upbeat anthems, deserve recognition.

WINNER: Welad El Shams

Bahaa Sultan’s performance of Sahbi was an instant hit. With its catchy melody and lyrics, it topped Spotify’s most-listened charts during Ramadan and was an earworm for most people whether they had watched the show or not.

Innocence in the face of cruelty

? Do you remember the feeling of being unable to speak in a dream? In the Country of Men by US-born and British-Libyan novelist Hisham Matar carries a similarly intense mood that lingers just as heavily. The novel explores Libya’s tense political climate in 1979 through the eyes and voice of nine-year-old Suleiman — whose innocent childhood days take a sharp turn into a web of intrigue and secrecy.

The mixture of child innocence with brutal realism is what keeps the novel resonant. The political atmosphere and repression of the time forces Suleiman to remove his rose-colored glasses and acknowledge the reality of the society he grew up in, as his father pays the price for resilience and defending his principles.

You want to help, but you can’t. Throughout your reading, you constantly wish to help the young boy who bears no life experience to inform how to handle the hardships he faces. Trapped between his family’s bitter past and present, hot on the heels of the September 1969 revolution, Suleiman stumbles over events beyond his ability. The cruelty is that you can only sit back, read and observe.

WHERE TO FIND IT- In the Country of Men is available at Diwan.
