THE WEEK IN REVIEW

CBE cuts rates by 100 bps

Good morning, friends, and a happy Friday to you all. We hope your AC units haven’t gone into hibernation yet — this heatwave is giving us flashbacks to Sahel, sans the sea.

Most people wait until New Year’s to commit to improving their lives. But those with entrepreneurial mindsets know that 4Q offers the chance to charge into the new year. This week’s guide is the first of a series that will serve as your roadmap for the coming 90 days. Instead of just surviving the last few months of the year, why not transform your life?

🗞️ LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

ECONOMY-

#1- The Central Bank of Egypt cut interest rates by 100 bps in its sixth Monetary Policy Committee meeting of the year yesterday, according to a statement. This marks the second consecutive cut, after the CBE cut rates by 200 bps in its previous meeting in late August.

Where rates currently stand: The overnight deposit rate now stands at 21.0%, the overnight lending rate at 22.0%, and the main operation and disc. rates at 21.5%. Rates are now down a whole 625 bps since the bank began its easing cycle in April.

#2- The economy grew at a 4.4% clip during the fiscal year 2024-2025, outpacing the 4.2% targeted in the draft budget and the 2.4% growth recorded in FY 2023-2024. However, the figure is 0.1 percentage point below the preliminary figure announced by Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk in August, and below the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) growth forecast for 2025 of 4.8%, which it raised this week 0.8 percentage points from its May estimates.

#3- The government is preparing a new integrated package of legislation to support the business community, which will be submitted to the House of Representatives once finalized. The package aims to make it easier for businesses to operate by removing tax, customs, and procedural barriers.

INVESTMENT WATCH-

Nearly half of Qatar’s USD 7.5 bn direct investment pledge will gotoward a Red Sea project, which will be undertaken by the Qatar Investment Authority-owned Qatari Dair and Marriott-owned hospitality chain St. Regis. Details on the proposed USD 3.5 bn project are still few and far between, but it could be part of previously reported negotiations with unnamed Gulf sovereign wealth funds to launch big-ticket projects in the 174 sq km Ras Shukeir zone on the Red Sea.

REAL ESTATE-

Gov’t rethinks North Coast land pricing: The New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) has suspended new land allocations on the North Coast to allow for a comprehensive update of pricing policies of plots around Ras El Hekma through to Alam El Roum. The move comes as the government reviews land valuations in light of new road networks and the flagship Ras El Hekma project.

DEBT WATCH-

Egypt’s return to the international debt market is off to a good start, with its USD 1.5 bn sukuk offering receiving over USD 9 bn in subscription requests. The dual-tranche sukuk issuance — scheduled for 7 October — is split between a USD 700 mn, 3.5-year tranche and a USD 800 mn, seven-year tranche.

INDUSTRY-

Local ceramic and porcelain producers are awaiting a decision from the Investment Ministry on whether to impose safeguard tariffs on imports of Chinese origin — even if they enter via Arab countries — after filing a complaint three months ago. The case is in its final stages with the authorities, and a decision is expected within a month, which our source believes would protect local industry from dumping practices and restore balance to the market.

COMMODITIES-

#1- No electricity price hikes before January -Esmat confirms: The Madbouly government will keep electricity prices unchanged until the start of 2026. A new tariff structure will then be set based on actual costs.

#2- A fuel price hike incoming? The government could raise fuel prices in the coming days as part of its plan to fully liberalize pricing and recover production costs. The government has kept fuel prices unchanged for the past six months since the last hike in April.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

OVER IN THE US- Following a bitter spending deadlock between US President Donald Trump and Democrats in Congress, the US federal government shut down after failing to reach a funding agreement by the midnight deadline, marking the first shutdown since 2019 and triggering widespread disruptions to federal services.

The shutdown disrupts the jobs of hundreds of thousands of US citizens and upends many public services, with an estimated 750k government employees facing temporary furloughs. Key economic reports will be delayed, national parks will largely be closed, and new federal loans for small businesses and homebuyers will be paused. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits are expected to continue uninterrupted, and air traffic controllers and TSA agents will remain on the job, though unpaid.

ALSO- US President Donald Trump ordered to deploy troops in Portland and immigration detention facilities nationwide, authorizing what he called “full force, if necessary” in a bid to confront what he described as “domestic terrorists” targeting federal immigration sites. Trump’s move comes days after a deadly shooting in an ICE field office in Dallas and marks his most aggressive domestic security escalation to date.

CLOSER TO HOME- UN sanctions on Iran came back on Saturday after European powers triggered the so-called “snapback” mechanism, accusing Tehran of breaching its 2015 nuclear commitments. The move restores bans on uranium enrichment, missile-related activity and arms sales — and has already sent Iran’s IRR to record lows. Tehran recalled its ambassadors to the UK, France and Germany for consultations and warned of a “harsh response.”

Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have agreed on a US-brokered peace framework for Gaza — a 20-point plan that calls for an immediate ceasefire. Trump warned Hamas that Israel would have Washington’s “full support” to destroy Hamas if it rejects the deal. The US president later gave Hamas three to four days to respond to his proposed peace plan for Gaza, warning of a “very sad end” if it does not accept the proposal.

ALSO- Israel intercepted a number of vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was on its way to Gaza to deliver aid, moving some of the activists on board to an Israeli port. The passengers also said Israel was using “active aggression” on their fleet and trying to sink one of the boats.

MEANWHILE IN THE BUSINESS PRESS- Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway is reportedly closing in on a USD 10 bn deal to buy Occidental Petroleum’s petrochemicals arm OxyChem — a move that would be the conglomerate’s largest acquisition in three years.

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

Your guide to using 4Q for personal growth

While most people wind down and wait for January to make changes, savvy business-minded people know that 4Q is a chance to finish strong and create momentum that carries into the new year. Instead of just surviving through the holidays, you have the option to thrive through the intentional transformation of your personal life.

WHY THE FINAL QUARTER WORKS

Why not wait until January? There’s something powerful about aligning our goals with nature’s rhythms. Just as trees prepare for winter by sending energy to their roots, 4Q is perfect for deepening our foundation and preparing for growth. Research shows that 90 days is the optimal timeframe for creating lasting change. It’s long enough to build real habits, but short enough to maintain focus and motivation. Unlike annual resolutions that feel overwhelming and distant, quarterly planning feels achievable and immediate. And as of today, 3 October, you have almost exactly that amount of time left.

We’ve designed this guide to be your companion for the next 90 days. Each month has a specific theme and focus, and each week a new phase.

Your success during this time will depend on three key principles: Consistency over perfection — small daily actions that compound into major transformations; flexibility within structure — adapting the plan to your life while maintaining the core framework; and progress over perfection — celebrating small victories and learning from setbacks.

PART ONE: FOUNDATION (DAYS 1-30)

THEME: RESET AND REFLECT

October is your foundation month, but you’re not just laying groundwork — this month is about rapid assessment, clear goal setting, and action that creates momentum for the final sprint.

#1- WEEK ONE: LIFE AUDIT

Before you improve your life, you need to know where you currently stand. The University of Tennessee used research from the Inter-Association Well-Being Definition and the Global Wellness Institute to identify eight areas of our lives that contribute to our mental and physical health. These areas need constant upkeep and balance to help us reach our full potential, whether personally or professionally. Take stock of what you need to improve on by rating each area from 1-10, with 10 being exactly where you want to be.

HEALTH AND VITALITY includes your physical fitness and energy levels, nutrition and eating habits, sleep quality and recovery, and stress management. This foundation area is the most critical, and affects everything else in your life.

SOCIAL WELLNESS encompasses family connections, friendships and social life, professional relationships, and community involvement. This aspect will be your source of support and joy throughout not just your transformation journey, but your life.

CAREER AND PURPOSE covers job satisfaction and growth, skill development, career trajectory, and sense of purpose and meaning within or outside of your career. This area often drives much of our daily energy and long-term planning.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS involves income and expenses, savings and investments, debt management, and financial security and planning. Financial stress can undermine progress in other areas, and financial confidence can allow for more energy and freedom dedicated to the other aspects.

PERSONAL GROWTH is about learning and development, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and goal achievement. This meta-skill of continuous improvement is a key component in the progress of all other areas.

HOME ENVIRONMENT encompasses living space organization, comfort and functionality, creating sanctuary, and environmental health. Your physical environment either supports or hinders your daily habits and overall wellbeing.

CREATIVITY AND FUN includes hobbies and interests, creative expression, play and recreation, and adventure and novelty. These areas provide renewal and prevent burnout while adding richness to life during the busiest quarter.

SPIRITUALITY AND INNER LIFE covers connection to something beyond ourselves, valuing alignment, contentment, and meaning and purpose. This foundation provides resilience during challenging times, and informs direction for major decisions.

Stop, start, continue. For each life area that scored below seven, ask yourself: What habits, behaviors, or commitments should you eliminate? What is draining energy from you without providing value? What new practices or activities would improve this area most significantly in the coming 90 days? What’s already working that you should maintain or expand upon during this final quarter?

#2- WEEK TWO: VISION AND GOAL SETTING

Your vision statement will be your north star for the next 90 days. It should be inspiring, specific, and achievable by December 31st. Write a paragraph describing who you want to be and what you want to have accomplished by the end of the year.

A strong and specific vision might read something like: “By December 31st, I am finishing the year strong and starting 2026 with momentum. I have optimized my health and energy for peak performance, strengthened my most important relationships through intentional connection, and positioned myself professionally for next year’s goals. My home feels like a sanctuary during the busy season, my finances are organized and growing, and I approach the new year with confidence and clear direction.”

The 3-2-1 framework: Choose goals that work together and reinforce each other rather than ones that compete for your limited time and energy over these focused 90 days.

Three major goals should be your primary focus areas that can realistically show significant progress in 90 days. Choose from your lowest-scoring life areas, make them specific and measurable, and ensure that they’re challenging but achievable within the timeframe.

Two supporting habits are daily practices that support all your goals simultaneously and can be established quickly. These might include morning routine elements that set you up for success, evening reflection practices that help you learn and adjust rapidly, or weekly planning sessions that maintain focus and momentum during the busy season.

One mindset shift represents the mental change that will enable everything else during this intensive period. This could be moving from perfectionist thinking to progress-focused execution, shifting from overwhelming yourself to strategic focus, or evolving from a reactive to a proactive person.

#3- WEEK THREE: SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURE

Building your 90-day rhythm: Your daily structure needs to maximize progress in limited time while remaining sustainable through the busy season.

YOUR MORNING LAUNCH should take 15-20 minutes, and might include physical activation to energize your body for peak performance, intention setting focused on your three major goals, and priority identification for advancing your most important objectives each day.

A MIDDAY PROGRESS CHECK requires just five minutes for a quick assessment of your daily progress so far, energy adjustment for the rest of the day’s performance, and priority refinement based on what’s working and what needs attention.

EVENING INTEGRATION takes 10-15 minutes to review your day and prepare for tomorrow, focusing on maintaining momentum without losing time to decision fatigue, and celebrating small wins that build motivation for continued effort.

Plan weekly strategic reviews: Schedule a consistent weekly planning session — Saturday evenings would work particularly well. Use this time to assess progress against your December 31st vision, adjust tactics based on what you’re learning about your capacity and preferences, plan the upcoming week’s priorities with laser focus on high-impact activities, and maintain motivation by celebrating progress while identifying areas for improvement.

This weekly ritual becomes even more critical during the compressed timeframe, ensuring you stay strategically focused rather than just busy.

#4- WEEK FOUR: ACTION PHASE AND MOMENTUM BUILDING

Create environments that automatically support your 90-day goals without requiring constant willpower. Physical spaces should be optimized for your specific goals. Your bedroom should support the sleep quality that fuels daily progress. Your workspace should eliminate distractions and maximize focus on high-priority activities. Your kitchen should make healthy eating effortless. Your main living areas should reinforce the person you’re becoming rather than old patterns you’re changing.

Digital environments require strategic curation for focus. Remove apps and subscriptions that distract you too much from your goals, but make space and time for levity. Organize your phone and computer to support your three major objectives, and set up systems that remind you of priorities rather than pulling you toward time-wasting activities.

Rapid routine installation: With only 90 days, you need routines that stick quickly and support immediate progress. Start with minimum viable versions that you can execute consistently even on difficult days. Focus intensely on consistency during the first two weeks, then gradually add complexity as habits solidify. Build routines around your peak energy times and existing schedule rather than trying to completely restructure your life. Create backup versions for busy days, travel, and holidays.

FIRST SPRINT REVIEW

End October with a comprehensive assessment of your launch month to optimize your approach for the upcoming 60 days. Evaluate what’s working by identifying which habits have taken hold most quickly, what systems are serving your goals effectively, and where you’re seeing early progress that motivates continued effort.

Assess what needs adjustment by determining which goals might need refinement for better 90-day achievability, what obstacles you’ve encountered that require different strategies, and how you can optimize your approach for November’s increased intensity.

Extract lessons learned by understanding what you’ve discovered about your capacity for change, how your energy and motivation fluctuate throughout intense periods, and what strategies create the most progress in the shortest time.

Now you have the blueprint to build your foundation throughout October. During this month, you will have assessed where you are, set your vision for December 31st, and established the systems that will carry you through the final sprint. Now comes the real test.

November is when your October groundwork will meet real-world pressure — and where the magic will happen. It will be all about taking the foundation you’ve built and pushing it to the next level.

PART TWO: EXECUTION publishes the first weekend of November. Make sure you’re ready.

At the Movies

The cost of conviction

🎥 Paul Thomas Anderson’s (loose) adaptation of a 1990 novel held our undivided attention for its entire 2 hour and 40 minute runtime. One Battle After Another, based on the postmodern fiction Vineland, is a gripping exploration of modern-day US politics, tackling questions of race, immigration, revolution, and counter-revolution in a mixture of action, thriller, and comedy.

What you’re in for: The film follows Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio), a former revolutionary whose world collapsed when his love and comrade Perifidia (Teyana Taylor) was killed, and their group of liberal rebels forced underground. Years later, Bob has fried his brain with substances while raising his hard-headed daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti) in relative obscurity. When Colonel Steven Lockjaw (Sean Penn) — a right-wing bigot who has a 15-year-old bone to pick — returns with military might to settle old scores, Bob is dragged back into the foray.

DiCaprio settles comfortably into the role of Bob, delivering a performance that balances worn-out exhaustion with flashes of his former idealistic fire. His forced return to the battlefield is nothing short of a comedic, odyssey-like triumph, as he roams the streets in his pajamas, struggling to decipher ever-changing code words and cursing historical revisionism. The fast-paced cinematography and nerve-racking score create a high-strung momentum that somehow still leaves room for moments of awe and genuine laughter.

While DiCaprio cements himself as perhaps the best working actor to play a paranoid drug-ridden character, Penn’s performance as Lockjaw nearly steals the show. His cartoonish yet chilling depiction of a troubled, uber-racist US soldier is at once terrifying and oddly charismatic, creating a villain who feels both larger-than-life and disturbingly grounded in reality.

Anderson’s works never lend themselves easily to interpretation, and this film is no exception. Beneath its political overtones, the film offers a thoughtful examination of inherent human weakness and our attempts to mask it with ideological overzealousness. Whether it’s the French 75 with their over-the-top assertions of liberal rights, or the Christmas Adventurers who worship Santa, both sides of the political aisle take themselves so seriously that they cross the line from meaningful struggle to vain, contrived territory.

The film suggests that obsession with higher ideals often leaves a trail of severed connections, embodied most poignantly in Willa, a lost and rejected offspring caught between warring factions that have forgotten what they’re really fighting for.

WHERE TO WATCH- One Battle After Another is screening at VOX Cinemas at City Center Almaza, Mall of Alexandria and Mall of Egypt, City Stars Cinema, and Scene Cinema at CFCM and District 5. The movie is also screening at Cima Arkan and P90 Cinema. Watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:39).

The fall of the House of the Dragon

📚 Seeing as the Game of Thrones universe was painfully absent from our screens in 2025, we’re getting our fill by revisiting the fictional history book that started it all: Fire and Blood. With the third season of House of the Dragon postponed to 2026 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms still nowhere in sight, audiences far and wide are eagerly awaiting to know the fate of the Targaryens’ civil war — but you don’t have to wait.

Chronicling the first 150 years of Targaryen rule, Fire and Blood is a fictional history book that reads as a real one — if real history had dragons and blood magic. Published in 2018, the book is set to receive a sequel covering a further 150 years, but seeing how The Winds of Winter is going, we’re doubtful we’ll be getting it — at least not during George R.R. Martin’s lifetime. The book (which, is worth mentioning, is also reportedly receiving its own adaptation) begins with Aegon’s conquest, who — alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya — overcame six kingdoms to unite Westeros under their rule.

Upon the conqueror’s death, the first crack in the great house begins to make itself known. We meet Aegon’s successors: the timid Aenys and Maegor the Cruel, and watch as the Targaryen court begins to turn on itself. Kings and queens prove ruthless, worshipping power over all else. The majority of the novel zeroes in on the events from the HBO spin-off The Dance of the Dragons — not to be confused with the fifth installment of Martin’s books, A Dance with Dragons. Yet as pages turn, the reader comes to discover that the show has taken quite a few liberties with the plot and the characters.

We will not be spoiling, but we will say this: we hope HBO’s budget is generous, seeing as the adaptation has only scratched the surface of the war thus far.

There’s much room for interpretation, and that’s what makes it exciting. Fire and Blood, in universe, is written by the maesters of the citadel, and thus some logical discrepancies are easy to spot — but that’s the point. History is written by the victors, and House Targaryen certainly was not. It’s an incredibly entertaining read, and despite its length, a quick one as you will find it quite difficult to put it down.

History buff? Fantasy nerd? Fire and Blood falls right in the middle of that Venn diagram. Not a traditional novel by any means, its events are written in the same manner you’d expect to encounter in our world’s history books. The writing is straight to the point, the characters are enigmatic and mysterious, and there’s a lot to be read between the lines (and consequently, lots to theorize). If you’re tired of waiting for the next iteration of the franchise to drop, we’d say you’ll be quite content reading Fire and Blood.

WHERE TO GET IT- You can find Fire and Blood as a paperback at Diwan, get the ebook from Amazon, and listen to the audiobook on Storytel.

Hot and Fresh Out of the Kitchen

Craving a gourmet burger on the go?

🍔 When it comes to burger spots, they’re a dime a dozen. Almost every single restaurant you might walk into in Greater Cairo knows how to fire up a grill and dish one out — even if the cuisine on the tin is as far as can be from the American classic. Yet when it comes to dedicated establishments on a quest to perfect gourmet burgers, you’ll come to find that your options quickly dwindle. This week, our quest to find the perfect patty led us to BTB.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, or a burger spot by its seating arrangements. While the self-service and classic caféteria style tables and chairs may be off-putting if you were planning to linger, the food more than makes up for the discounted comfort. With a curated menu of in-house specials, BTB follows a “less is more” approach. You’ll find just a few beef variations, three chicken burgers, and a lonesome veggie option. But this is the mark of an eatery that knows how to hone the quality of their offerings.

A quick look at the menu, and we made our way to the cashier station. We picked a double patty truffle burger, a double patty “frickin’” — a truffle burger with caramelised onion jam, American cheese, and bacon — curly fries, and hot mess fries, which come with chilli.

As one naturally does, we started with the fries. The hot mess fries were a hit, crispy and refusing to give into the sogginess, and the curly fries were equally enjoyable. When it came time to try the burgers, we were initially disappointed by the portion size. Each could comfortably fit inside the palms of our hands, but we pushed through. The flavor more than made up for the physical measurements, and the burgers — particularly the signature frickin’ — carried the right balance of sauce, salt, and sizzle.

Go hungry, but don’t go famished. While BTB’s burgers proved worthy of gourmet status, the portion size may remain a dealbreaker for many-a-hungry Cairenes, especially when the pricing is taken into consideration. A single patty will set you back an average of EGP 220, with a double patty averaging around EGP 300. If you’re looking for a quick, flavorsome bite on the go, we’d definitely recommend BTB. If you’re looking for a more comfortable sit-down experience where you can linger, we’d urge you to check out Le Garage at U Venues.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find BTB in New Cairo at District 5 and Lakehouse The Club. You can also order through their website.

PASS THE CONTROLLER

Hades II has some growing pains

🎮 Hades II has emerged from early access and the verdict is in: Supergiant has crafted another masterpiece, though this time with some growing pains. After 15 months in early access, the game launched its full 1.0 version on 25 September, delivering the complete story that players have been waiting for.

The good news: Combat remains exceptional. Reviews consistently praise the moment-to-moment gameplay as thrilling and technically excellent. Melinoë’s witchy arsenal feels distinct from Zagreus’s approach, demanding more tactical positioning and careful use of Omega attacks. The dual-path structure — fighting both down to Chronos in the underworld and up to Mount Olympus — effectively doubles the game’s scope while preventing the repetition fatigue common in roguelikes.

The new cast shines brightly. Characters like the surly Nemesis, who challenges you during runs, and the musical boss fight against Scylla and the Sirens (whose earworm chorus “I’m gonna claw out your eyes, then drown you to death” has lodged itself in players’ brains) demonstrate Supergiant’s continued excellence in character design and voice acting. The relationships feel as rich as the original, with Melinoë’s cooler, more tactical personality providing effective contrast to Zagreus’s hot-headed rush-down style.

But there’s a catch: progression bloat. Hades II has significantly more complex resource management than its predecessor. Players must juggle ashes, psyche, moon dust, bones, and numerous collectible resources including various ores and flora. There’s also a farm, a cauldron for brewing incantations, resource gathering with pickaxes and shovels, and mini-games to collect psyche. Some critics found these systems intrusive enough that runs began feeling like “obligatory farming missions” rather than pure arcade action gauntlets.

The difficulty curve proves uneven. Several reviewers noted that boss encounters can feel unfairly difficult until suddenly they don’t — a sisyphean wall that becomes trivial once the right upgrades align. The massive scope means a single run might grant none of the resources needed for meaningful progression, creating frustrating stretches where advancement feels artificially delayed.

The ending may divide players. Without spoiling specifics, the resolution to the main storyline might not deliver the satisfying retribution that the game’s mantra builds toward. However, the game’s themes about family reunion and collective resistance against oppression come through clearly.

Should you buy it? If you value streamlined, focused roguelikes, you might want to stick to the predecessor. But if you’re drawn to Supergiant’s unparalleled art direction, stellar voice acting, and narrative depth — and don’t mind some mid-game progression friction — Hades II offers an epic, endlessly replayable experience. The endgame content is reportedly deeper than the original’s, with challenge runs, continuing character arcs, and additional upgrade paths that reward long-term investment.
