THE WEEK IN REVIEW

El Sisi makes his first official visit to Turkey

Good morning, wonderful people, and happy Friday. We hope you all enjoy your weekend in the city as the Sahel season is officially over and we are back to ordinary weekends.

In Enterprise Guide this week, we’ll introduce you this week to some sports you can take up at any age and practice in clubs around you, making your weekends healthier.

LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

DIPLOMACY-

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi touched down in Ankara on Wednesday, in his first ever official visit to Turkey. El Sisi discussed with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan boosting bilateral trade and the two countries’ stances on Gaza and Libya, in the latest step toward strengthening relations between the former regional rivals.

ECONOMY-

#1- The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) decided to once again leave the interest rates unchanged at its monetary policy meeting yesterday (pdf), noting that “current policy rates remain appropriate to maintain the prevailing tight monetary stance until a significant and sustained decline in inflation is realized.”

#2- Non-oil private sector activity expanded in August for the first time in over three years, S&P Global’s Egypt Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report showed. The report pointed to more stable demand conditions thanks to “market recovery amid improved macro-economic factors and rising export business” as an important reason behind activity finally increasing.

A long time coming: The index rose to 50.4 in August, up from 49.7 in July. The country’s non-oil private sector has been in contraction since November 2020, but has been flirting with the 50.0 mark that separates growth from contraction since May thanks to cooling inflation and growing confidence.

#3- Egypt’s net foreign asset surplus expanded a modest 3.5% to USD 13.3 bn in July, up from USD 12.9 bn in June, according to Enterprise calculations based on Central Bank of Egypt figures. This is the country’s third month in the green after our net foreign assets shifted from deficit to surplus in May — the first time our net foreign asset position had been in the green since February 2022.

AUTOMOTIVE-

#1- Gov’t to set up local EV manufacturing complex: The government is planning to establish a 50k sqm local EV manufacturing facility. “Serious steps” will be taken to raise the percentage of local inputs into the manufacture of EVs through the project.

#2- Egypt’s auto production to grow, but at a slower pace than its neighbors: The country’s vehicle production is expected to witness steady increases over the coming years, but will likely fall behind regional competitors, according to a recent BMI report. The report expects Egypt to produce 37k vehicles in 2024, putting the country second place in the region above Algeria with an expected 17.4k vehicles and way behind Morocco in first place with 614k vehicles.

ENERGY-

More renewables projects in the pipeline: UAE’s Masdar, Infinity Power, and Hassan Allam Utilities will set up USD 900 mn worth of solar power plants in Upper Egypt with a combined capacity of 1 GW after the Madbouly government greenlit the move. The projects will be built under a build-own-operate (BOO) contract and should be up and running and feeding the national grid before the end of 2025.

What’s next? The final agreements should be signed in October, with the final reviews underway to set the price of the energy sold from the project. The companies will receive usufruct rights for the land in exchange for 2% of the energy produced.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-

Capmas is expected to publish August’s inflation figures on Tuesday — some analysts see inflation picking up again in August on the back of recent price hikes, with some seeing inflation coming in at 30-31% for the month. The favorable base effect played a crucial role in reducing inflation over the five months ending in July, but this will change for August, September, and October as these months will reflect the impact of increased fuel and electricity prices,” Zilla Capital’s Aya Zoheir previously told us.

Remember: Annual urban inflation cooled to its lowest level since December 2022 in the last monthly data set, which showed annual inflation coming in at 25.7% in July, down 1.8 percentage points from 27.5% in June. Annual core inflation — which excludes volatile items such as food and fuel — slowed to 24.4%, down from 26.6%.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

The USD took its steepest dive of the year in August, losing over 2% against other major currencies as markets anticipated the US Federal Reserve might cut interest rates amid signs of a slowing economy. The greenback nevertheless rose to a two-week high on Tuesday, as markets braced for a series of key economic reports, including Friday’s US Jobs report, which pundits think will help set the tone for the US Federal Reserve’s next three interest rate meetings.

OVER IN US ELECTION NEWS- Things are looking increasingly up for the Democrats post-Biden, with Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris gaining an edge of around 2 percentage points on Republican candidate Donald Trump among likely voters in seven key US swing states. Harris is tied with or beating Trump in all seven states and has virtually erased the lead Trump enjoyed over Joe Biden prior to ending his bid for the Democratic Party’s nomination. Meanwhile, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll has found Harris leading Trump among registered voters nationwide by a margin of 4 percentage points, up from the 1 percentage point lead registered by the polling agency in late July.

IN OUR NECK OF THE WOODS- As the war on Gaza crosses the 330-day mark, crowds of up to 500k took to thestreets in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and other Israeli cities to protest Netanyahu’s continued stalling on a ceasefire agreement, which protestors claim is impeding the return of the remaining 101 hostages.

The protests reflect an increasingly polarized Israeli society, say much of the commentariat, with right-wing politicians threatening to bring down Netanyahu’s political coalition if he accepts a ceasefire agreement. On the far right of the country’s already far right cabinet, Israeli Finance Minister Bazalel Smotrich called on the country’s attorney general to block the planned labor strike, accusing protesters of “fulfilling (Hamas chief Yahyeh) Sinwar’s dream.”

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

New sports you can take up at any age

The Olympic spirit is still in the air and may still have some longing to unleash their inner athlete and take up a new sport. A gold medal may be out of reach, but learning a new sport isn’t. Here are some sports you can take up at any age, and where to go to train.

ARCHERY: Used for hunting and warfare by the Ancient Egyptians, Archery has been around for over 5k years. And it seems our modern world won’t let it go either… and for good reason. Who doesn’t want a reason to be in an open-air space and some work on hand-eye coordination?

#1- Archer’s Academy: This academy provides exceptional training in archery, air rifles, and handguns with safety set as the priority. No need to do your homework before you go — your first class tells you all about the history and method of archery, going over safety protocols and covering all the basics. Equipment is provided.

LOCATION: Club De La Salle in New Cairo.

#2- Archery Hub: Committed to the same values, this club offers daily walkins or session packages for beginner to advanced students.

LOCATION: Two locations in New Cairo, at The Turf and Manchester International School, one in 6th of October, and one in Benha.

RUNNING: As long as you are cautious of muscle and joint safety, running is a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness across all ages.

#1- Cairo Runners: While running is a sport you can practice anywhere, joining a training program might be best to ensure that you aren’t putting yourself at risk of injury. Aside from running training programs, Cairo Runners also host events like the Luxor Half Marathon, happening this October.

LOCATION: Determined per event.

#2- Runna: Whether you’re training for a half-marathon, marathon, or triathlon, this is an app that you can use to plan out your training and stay motivated. Following a program will also help to improve your performance. They also plan events like the Runna Run Club with Beth Potter that happened last Wednesday. You can find the app on Android and iOS.

ROWING: Modern rowing clubs situated along the Nile were established as early as the 1900s. Now, it has become a great way for Egyptians to connect with the river that shaped the country. Water sports schools told The New York Times that they see newcomers ranging from 20-60 years old. So prepare to dip the oars, push with the legs, pull back, and repeat.

#1- Nile Dragons Academy: After launching in 2013, Nile Dragons became the first academy in Egypt to offer Masters Rowing, competitions for adults over 27 years old. They now offer Learn-to-Row, recreational, and competitive rowing programs for both youth and adults.

LOCATION: Maadi.

#2- Cairow: Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced rower, Cairow has a structured curriculum that will address all your needs, including a mandatory induction session for any beginner. They also go beyond training and extend their responsibility to the environment by addressing what they can do to develop and support the community while practicing the sport.

LOCATION: Dokki, Maadi, and Gouna.

GOLF: Whether you are 2 or 92, you can play golf. Requiring a basic level of fitness and flexibility, this sport teaches accuracy, focus, and concentration, and provides a social aspect that appeals to many people. Coincidentally enough, Egypt has strengthened its growing portfolio of world-class golf courses and offers a favorable year-round golfing climate. It only makes sense to enjoy a local feature that has received international recognition.

#1- Katameya Dunes: Offering a 400 yard all grass surface, this golf course provides players with an opportunity to play, learn, socialize, and enjoy the advanced features that help elevate their experience. There are Fully Qualified EPGA Professionals available with enough experience and knowledge to improve any golfer’s skill.

LOCATION: New Cairo.

#2- Allegria: With its Greg Norman golf course — a design named after the former Australian Golf Champion, the course is both playable by beginners and is Cairo’s most serious challenge to the accomplished golfer. To learn the game or refine your skills, there are professional instructors using video analysis, 3D body tracking, and physical screening, among other tools that maximize the learning experience.

LOCATION: Sheikh Zayed.

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO THIS WEEKEND?

Confronting the past in Retour en Alexandrie

📽 AT THE MOVIES-

Labaki’s dreamy Retour en Alexandrie: Inspired by his personal life, Back to Alexandria is the first long novel adaptation by director Tamer Raggli with Yousry Nasrallah and Marianne Brun on the script as well. The movie revolves around Sue (Nadine Labaki) a psychotherapist in her forties who decides to come back to Egypt and visit her mother Fayrouz (Fanny Ardant) on her deathbed, after being estranged for 20 years due to their unstable relationship.

In her trip from Switzerland to Cairo then to Alexandria, Sue faces the ghosts of her past, both figuratively and literally — memories, people, and feelings. Through these ghosts, she is able to find answers to a lot of questions she had throughout her life.

What we loved: The cast offers an authentic and moving performance. Complemented by nostalgic soundtracks featuring Abdelhalim Hafez, Nagat Al Saghira, and Dalida, the film is a genuinely dramatic experience. Back to Alexandria was able to offer a poetic experience that embodies the complex relationship between a mother and a daughter overwhelmed by anger and repression in a captivating symphony that grasps the audience with empathy, sorrow, and affection.

WHERE TO WATCH- The movie is an Arabic-French production and is available in English subtitles at Zawya, Downtown Cairo. You can check out the showings here, and watch the trailer here (runtime: 1:30).

Two friends from the past rekindle causing their fate to change forever. In the thrilling framework of The Wasp, actors Naomie Harris and Natalie Dormer meet in a film centered around anger and revenge.

The plot: The story revolves around Heather (Harris), who is certain that her husband Simon (Dominic Allburn) is being unfaithful. She decides to reconnect with Carla (Dormer), her school friend who she hadn’t spoken to in ages to convince her to conspire for revenge in exchange for a large sum of money. Little did Carla know that this was all a trap that will change her life forever.

All the scenes being filmed in the same location, an example of chamber piece cinema, can be seen as cinematographic artistry for some, but may be dull for others. Even though Harris and Dormer both gave impressive performances, they fell victim to poor writing that followed the “tricking the audience” narrative, according to Variety.

WHERE TO WATCH: You can catch the movie at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Almaza and Mall of Egypt, Zawya, Cairo Festival City cinema, Point 90 cinema, and Cima Arkan. Watch the trailer here (runtime: 2:10).

📚 FROM THE BOOKSTORE-

The Midnight Feast is an atmospheric psychological thriller set against the backdrop of the Dorset coast. Francesca Meadows has turned her inherited property into a luxurious eco-retreat, much to the disdain of the local villagers. What begins as a lavish summer solstice celebration in The Midnight Feast spirals into a tangled web of dark secrets, local resentment, and eerie pagan rituals.

A house fire and a body discovered at the bottom of a cliff. Francesca, the entitled host, prepares for her event while the locals conspire against her. Foley masterfully toggles between past and present, revealing the events leading up to and following the feast through multiple narrators, each with their own hidden motives. Layers of mystery unfold as old diary entries from 2010 expose the origins of the characters’ grudges. Tensions rise with every twist, blending luxury and folk horror into an unsettling narrative.

With its Hitchcockian influences and darkly intriguing cast of characters, the novel rewards patience, and though it starts slow, the payoff is a riveting, pulse-pounding conclusion.

You can find it at Diwan or Amazon.

🍴 HOT AND FRESH OUT OF THE KITCHEN-

Be transported to the seaside without leaving the city. You may have already heard of Clams and Claws and their signature Seafood Bag. You choose your shellfish, choose your sauce, and shake for a personalized and delicious dish. Many similar restaurants have popped up, but this is an homage to the OG.

The menu guides you through a step-by-step process that allows you to personalize your bag. We opted for a combination of large shrimp, squid, and imported mussels, though choices like crab, octopus, and lobster were also tempting (Note: some of the seafood options are priced depending on the day).

Once you’ve chosen your seafood, the next step is selecting your sauce. The garlic butter sauce was a perfect match for the fresh seafood, enhancing the flavors without overpowering them. For those inclined towards heat, there’s a spice scale ranging from non-spicy to mild, medium, and an extreme option fittingly named “I can’t feel my mouth.”

There’s a combo option for an extra treat. It adds corn or baked potatoes that soak up the savory juices of the seafood and sauce — a decision that proved to be utterly delicious.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Clams and Claws has branches in Tagamoa, Almaza, Maadi and Arkan.

💵 Per person: EGP 700-1k.

🪑 Outdoor seating: Yes.

🍺 Alcohol: No.

🦽 Accessibility friendly: Yes.
