AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

Among the biggest news driving headlines this week: Russia pulling out of the Black Sea grain pact. The move threatens to spark renewed volatility in global food prices, after the Kremlin pulled out, claiming that “the part of the Black Sea agreement that concerns Russia has not yet been fulfilled.”

El Niño has also captured a lot of attention: Global temperatures soaring to new records continued to make waves across the foreign press .

China’s 2Q growth figures were a big disappointment . The nation’s growth saw minimal improvement due to slowing exports, dwindling retail sales, and a challenged real-estate market. GDP grew at a meager 6.3%, while q-o-q growth clocked in at 0.8%. Unemployment rose to 21.3% in June, an increase from 20.8% in May. These factors suggest that policymakers will push to strengthen the economy to recover just six months after the covid-19 restrictions were removed.

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

The beginner’s guide to getting started with diving in Egypt

The Enterprise guide to Scuba Diving: Egypt is one of the world’s most sought after scuba diving destinations. Our 800 km Red Sea coast is home to thousands of marine animals, hundreds of the most resilient coral species worldwide and favorable weather conditions year round. The country’s reef tourism industry — which includes snorkeling and scuba diving — is the largest in the world, with revenues reaching USD 7 bn back in 2019, and a huge draw for tourists arriving at our airports every year.

There’s tons of places to go diving across Egypt — so we’re here to help you figure out how to get started and where to go. Let’s dive in.

FIRST THING’S FIRST- The prerequisites: In order to rent the necessary gear that allows you to breathe underwater or be granted permission to dive anywhere around the world, you are required to show proof of certification from an internationally recognized body like the Professional Association of Diving Instructors ( PADI) or Scuba Schools International ( SSI) . You need to be over 10 years old, a strong swimmer, not be pregnant and have no serious underlying health conditions in order to qualify for an open water course, according to PADI.

BUT- If you want to just dip your toes before going pro: You can start slow with a single exploratory dive before committing to a full-fledged Open Water course. These test runs, often referred to as a Discovery Dive or Try Scuba program, involve short dives in controlled settings, where you get the chance to experience what it's like to simply breathe underwater while under the close supervision of an instructor. These bite-sized programs would be the underwater equivalent of tandem skydiving and will run you about EGP 1.7 -3k.

FOR MORE SERIOUS BEGINNER DIVERS- Most people start out by enrolling in a standard Open Water Diver Certification Course at a PADI or SSI-certified dive center. Over the duration of the course, which takes between four days and a week to complete, you will learn about diving gear, safety procedures, how to communicate underwater, and a little about marine life.

Expect to start off by learning about the scientific and theoretical underpinnings of how diving works before moving on to practical training in a controlled environment like a pool or a shallow bay, according to the diving centers we’ve been to. Once your pool skills are solid, you spend four dives in the open seas where an instructor conducts an assessment of what you’ve learned so far. You should also be prepared to pass a written exam as part of your course.

You’ll get a taste of the underwater world during your certification process: By the end of the open water course you will have completed a total of five dives, and will be permitted to dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters. You’ll also have a functional grasp on how to safely descend into the depths of the sea and bring yourself back to the surface.

There is no shortage of places to get certified in Egypt: There are almost 300 dive centers registered with the Tourism Ministry-affiliated Chamber of Diving and Water Sports( CDWS) that offer gear rental and courses in almost every place where land touches water. While your decision on where to go for a course will depend on factors like budget, availability and convenience, here our some of the most highly recommended spots that most avid divers we know have raved about:

Camel Dive Club , f ounded in 1986, is one of the oldest dive centers t o open its doors in Sharm El Sheikh and is widely considered to be a South Sinai institution. They offer a wide range of SSI courses in a friendly and environmentally-conscious atmosphere. For a fully streamlined diving experience, stay at their well-maintained and wheelchair accessible lodge where the center is located. The Open Water course will run you about EUR 420 (EGP 14.6k) but the price can go down to EUR 385 (EGP 13.4k) if you book in advance. The best part? Easy access to Ras Mohammed dive sites, which is one of the most spectacular diving spots in the area.

Orca Dive Club started off as a solo dive center in Hurghada in the 90s. Today, they’ve expanded to seven locations including Safaga; El Gouna; and Shoni Bay, Moreen Beach and Wadi Lahmy in Marsa Alam. Their Soma Bay location is inside Breakers Lodge where you have access to their impressive house reef. As one of the larger diving outfits in the country, Orca offers both SSI and PADI certifications. Open Water courses at Orca will run you about EUR 429 (EGP 14.9k).

Red Sea Diving Safari is the dive center behind a network of Southern dive lodges in the Marsa Alam region. The Marsa Shagra resort, which is about 20 km north of Marsa Alam, is their most famous location, known for its high quality facilities and stunning house reef. PADI Open Water courses will run you about EGP 9.8k with Red Sea Diving Safari. Best part: You’re allowed to dive unguided (with a buddy) at their house reef once you are certified.

Nestled in El Quseir’s Mangrove Bay Hotel, Ducks Diving is widely believed to be among the best in the country. Located about 40 km south of Hurghada and 130 km north of Marsa Alam since the 90s, their location is fairly unique when compared to where most other dive operators are clustered. They offer a variety of PADI, SSI and CMAS certifications at their facilities (which you can also find in Safaga, Marsa Alam and the Philippines). Open Water courses will run you about EGP 16.7k. You’re also allowed to dive unguided (with a buddy) at their house reef.

If you choose to go elsewhere, beware of scammers: If you decide to travel and figure it out on the fly, it's worth checking out CDWS’ blacklisted dive operators in Egypt before booking a course.

Once you’re certified, find a diving buddy: Elsewhere around the world you would technically be permitted to independently plan dives with any certified open water diver, but in Egypt most places require you to have a certified diving guide accompany you on your dives.

FOR ADVANCED DIVERS- if you’re a little more experienced, you can take your diving to the next level with advanced certifications. For Open Water divers who feel confident in their skillset, the next logical step would be to pursue an Advanced Open Water license – which can be found at most accredited dive centers offering Open Water courses. SSI and PADI both offer their own advanced certifications that allow you to deepen your knowledge about underwater navigation and expand the depth you are permitted to safely dive to 30 meters . This is also where you’ll be able to focus on specialized skills like improving your buoyancy or identifying marine life. Courses will run you about EGP 9-15k, depending on the center you choose .

PADI + SSI certifications have different prerequisites for advanced divers: The key difference to note here is that an SSI certification requires 24 logged dives before you can become eligible for advanced training, whereas PADI only requires the 4 dives completed with your Open Water certification.

Whichever certification you choose to get, there’s loads to see out there: From convenient shore dives in shallow bays to far flung shipwrecks, there’s something for everyone in the Red Sea. Stay tuned for a breakdown of our best diving spots across the country in part 2 of our guide next week.

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO THIS WEEKEND?

Oppenheimer is a stunning take on a historical epoch + Mistiqa Island is the perfect seaside Lebanese eatery

? AT THE MOVIES-

Early reviews of Oppenheimer have been calling it one of this century’s most important films and director Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus. While the movie’s appeal has been strongly tied with the release of Barbie on the same day, in an event many have been calling Barbenheimer, Barbie’s delay in Egypt hasn’t done much to take away from Oppenheimer’s turnout.

The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. He is the leading physicist in the Manhattan Project, which led to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the end of the Second World War in 1945. The film utilizes an ambitious ensemble cast that surprisingly does not distract from the content of the film. This features the talents of Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, and Josh Hartnett. Downey Jr., who delivers a surprising performance, showcases once again his acting chops beyond the MCU. This film is a dialogue-heavy character study that moves at a fast pace, so make sure you have your snacks and drinks ready, in advance, to minimize the risk of missing any scenes during trips to the concession stand, which will definitely leave you a bit confused.

Nolan takes a surprisingly strong political stance against almost perverse jingoism, highlighting the amorality of military ambition and the misuse of scientific brilliance. The urgency of the writing and editing of the film is almost dangerously engrossing — Nolan really surpasses his own standard of cinematographic excellence in Oppenheimer, perfecting the concept of “show, don’t tell.”

WHERE TO WATCH- You might want to hurry to grab tickets to this one. You can watch Oppenheimer in Vox Cinemas at City Center Almaza and Mall of Egypt, City Stars theaters, and Cairo Festival City.

That’s a wrap for the Insidious franchise. The Red Door is the fifth, and reportedly , final installment of Insidious, returning after a five-year hiatus since the last movie. Despite the negative reviews, the film has had the second-best opening weekend of the series. Set 10 years after Chapter 2, the film focuses on the strained relationship between the returning Josh and Dalton (who are father and son), which sucks them back into The Further — a dark realm, which they enter via astral projection. While they soul travel, their physical bodies are pretty much pawns for entities wanting to possess them.

The last installment delivers closure, but it often feels forced: Patrick Wilson, who plays Josh Lambert, takes over as director and does a surprisingly good job, keeping the visual tone of the previous installments consistent. While callbacks to the previous movies seem a little half-hearted (perhaps an obligatory homage), the scares in the first half literally put the jump in jumpscare. However, some of the non-horror elements felt out of place as Wilson obviously tries to humanize the series, which was at times successful but often jarring — like with scenes depicting family drama and Dalton at his university. All in all, while The Red Door doesn’t mar the franchise’s run, it fails to deliver the epic finale audiences expect. Instead, it’s more of a closure-oriented movie that ends on a practical, but unsatisfactory note.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch The Red Door in Vox theaters at City Center Almaza and Mall of Egypt and Cairo Festival City.

? FROM THE BOOKSTORE-

When is a guest not a guest? Emma Cline leaves you to both ask and answer this question for yourself in The Guest as you follow Alex, a failed actress, and currently, an escort, deeply in debt and deeply in trouble. Kicked out of her apartment by her roommates for failing to pay rent, no longer wanted by her clients, and on the run from a dangerous man who is very, very angry with her, she finds herself… swimming in the Hamptons.

Simon, a man 30 years her senior, has invited her to spend the summer with him… just as she’d planned for him to. Despite deceiving the ultra-rich Hamptonions, Alex commits a faux pas at a party, embarrassing Simon, and is promptly given a one-way ticket back to the city. Instead of facing the realities waiting for her there, she decides to grift her way through the summer, and all we can do is watch as her mistakes pile up, heading towards disaster.

The book is the perfect summer read, presenting a compelling antihero who oscillates between being welcome and unwelcome both in the Hamptons and in many other nuanced ways, making a thriller out of a girl just trying to get by.

WHERE TO GET IT- You can find a copy of The Guest for EGP 315 at Cherry Blossom Books, though it’s currently out of stock. It’s also available for USD 13.99 on Kindle, USD 24.99 for a paperback on Amazon, or USD 18. 59 for a hardback.

? HOT AND FRESH OUT OF THE KITCHEN-

Mistiqa Island Lebanese treats have arrived in Sahel. If you want to have a stunning view of the sea, head to the Lebanese eatery in La Vista Bay for a satisfying meal and calming vista. The golden hour promises a gentle sea breeze and marvelous azur blue waters as your view.

The grilled quail and Shish Tawook are two top dishes, perfectly marinated to make the delicate poultry much more flavorful. Their mouth watering hot mezzes include soujouk, kobeba, cheesy sambousak, stuffed vine leaves, and crispy mombar. For dessert, if you're into fruits, you can enjoy chilly slices of watermelons, colorful fruit mix platters, and frosty ice cream scoops.

If you’re more of a breakfast person, don’t miss their hearty breakfasts, which are served between 10am and 2pm. Their menu has foul with a variety of toppings, falafel, omelets, white cheese and tomato mix, and feteer meshaltet, which you should order a day before. Make sure you give them a call to reserve a table for their 80-90s party on Thursday.

PASS THE CONTROLLER

Street Fighter is back

Six years after the disappointing Street Fighter 5, Capcom makes a spectacular comeback. Street Fighter 6 is everything Street Fighter 5 wasn’t — fun, reliable, and multifaceted. It’s not often that developers manage to revamp a video game while keeping the spirit of the original intact, but Capcom did just that, showing that there’s a good reason the Street Fighter franchise is still going strong after its inception in 1987.

The franchise’s original gameplay mechanics are thankfully reinstated, relying on the trademarked Drive Gauge, which was designed to encourage player creativity by giving them the freedom to experiment with different techniques and combos. This familiar mechanism makes the new additions to the game easy to pick up. The first of these additions is Extreme Battle, a kind of party mode that allows players to fight with special rules and gimmicks, quickly becoming a player favorite.

Other additions include a real-time commentary system accompanying your fights. This gives the game a more competition-like feeling, especially if you’re playing against a friend. One of the biggest changes to the game is World Tour, a revamped version of Story Mode, where players can travel around the semi-open-world of Street Fighter using a created character and interact with the 18 characters in the playable roster and even become their disciple. The plot itself is lacking a bit, but it’s so fun that you won’t mind. There is also a GTA element to World Tour — that allows you to fight anyone on the street — that many gamers are sure to enjo y.

⌛ Hours of gameplay: 58 hours

? Price: USD 59.99 but you can try out a demo without charge before you commit

? Platforms: Playstation, Steam, Xbox

WHAT TO LISTEN TO

Start with This can get you out of your creative rut

Start With This : This interactive podcast for aspiring writers invites listeners to take part in an engaging creative process that aims to take you out of your creative rut. Episodes typically follow a consume/create pattern where listeners are led to watch or listen to a given work of art before using it as a springboard to write a creative piece that they then share within the podcast’s virtual community to both give and receive feedback. The show has a 4.7 review on Chartable with listeners hailing it as “ a constant source of creative inspiration.”

“It’s much harder to like something than to dislike something”: In an episode titled “ How to Like,” podcast co-host Jeffrey Cranor begins by reminding us that it is much easier to be a harsh critic than it is to be open to the world. To cement this idea, Cranor and his co-host, Joseph Fink — who, together, happen to be the creative forces behind the Night Vale podcast and novel — give listeners two assignments: “Consume” an episode of the ¡ Uy Que Horror ! Podcast before writing, or “creating, a rave review about something far from perfect they recently read, watched, or heard. The point being to find the positive qualities that are invariably found in every creative endeavor — no matter how small.
