🗞️ LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

ECONOMY-

#1- Non-oil private sector activity jumped back into the green in November, breaking a nine month stretch in contraction territory, according to S&P Global’s latest Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) report. Pushing the headline figure up into the green for only the third time since November 2020 was an uptick in new orders and output amid easing cost pressures.

Growth is now at its quickest pace in five years, increasing 1.9 points from the month before to 51.1 and comfortably above the 50.0 threshold that separates growth from contraction. This bodes well for a “strong end to 2025,” said S&P Global Senior Economist David Owen. Based on historical correlations, this should translate into GDP growth of 5% y-o-y in the last quarter of the year, he added.

#2- An IMF delegation has landed in Egypt this week, and is expected to be busy meeting with officials until 12 December. Policymakers hope it will lead to a staff-level agreement between the two sides ahead of the reviews and tranches being given the green light from the IMF Executive Board later down the line. The two reviews are expected to see USD 2.7 bn channeled into state coffers, in addition to the first tranche from the Resilience and Sustainability Facility, which could add a further USD 274 mn in climate financing.

ENERGY-

The Madbouly government is preparing to introduce new electricity price hikes starting January, a senior government official told EnterpriseAM. The proposed price hikes are expected to range between 15–25%, depending on consumption brackets, in an effort to close the gap between production costs and its end price, our source told us. Since August last year, electricity price hikes have been put on hold, with the government prioritising lower inflation and subsequent rate cuts over cutting down its energy subsidy bill. But with the outlook on inflation more positive, the government is returning to its plan to bring down its energy bill, our source told us.

AUTOMOTIVE-

Representatives from global automobile manufacturing giant Volkswagen met with Industry Minister Kamel El Wazir on the company’s plans to manufacture vehicles locally, according to a statement. The plan would kick off with contract manufacturing at the Egyptian German Automotive Company plant, followed by construction of a fully integrated automotive factory in East Port Said. This isn’t the first we hear of this: Africa Managing Director Martina Biene told Bloomberg back in June that the company is “very interested in Egypt as a production hub.”

REAL ESTATE-

Yamal and Jood, Talaat Moustafa Group’s (TMG) newest overseas developments, were inaugurated and launched sales earlier this week, the EGX heavyweight said in a disclosure (pdf) to the bourse. The two developments in Oman span a collective 4.9 mn sqm west of Muscat and will offer around 15k residential and hotel units, which the developer thinks will bring in USD 4.7 bn in sales over the lifetime of the projects.

INVESTMENT-

The Madbouly government is preparing Egypt’s first full-scale nationwide local investment map to channel private-sector capital into projects across all governorates, three government sources told EnterpriseAM. The initiative will list untapped assets and projects in every governorate. It is hoped the electronic platform will broaden private-sector participation across local development plans, the sources said. Early opportunities include logistics hubs, cold-chain zones, poultry and agricultural projects, and other underutilized assets identified by local authorities.

Promising commercial and logistics zones — including state-owned land parcels in Mansoura, Kafr El Sheikh, and Gharbia — have already been shortlisted ahead of offering, one source told EnterpriseAM. Five Egyptian-foreign consortiums have submitted proposals for logistics and commercial developments in the Delta, which are now under government review as part of a broader strategy to expand private investment outside Greater Cairo.

NBFI-

The Financial Regulatory Authority has issued its first unified and comprehensive manual covering every service it provides across the non-bank financial system, according to a statement from the regulator. The authority positions the manual as a pillar of its strategy to enhance transparency, improve the business environment, and strengthen Egypt’s ability to attract domestic and foreign investment, and will update the document on a rolling basis to ensure alignment with global regulatory developments, inviting all market participants to use it as the official and sole reference for dealings with the regulator.

STARTUPS-

2026 set to bring good news for our startups and entrepreneurs: The Finance Ministry is currently working with the Central Bank of Egypt and other relevant ministries to launch a first-of-its-kind financing initiative worth EGP 10 bn to support startups, a government source told EnterpriseAM. The initiative aims to provide concessional funding to entrepreneurs through the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA) and the CBE, according to the source. The initiative will also provide technical assistance and simplified procedures related to registration, documentation, and utilities.

DEBT-

The Finance Ministry sold EGP 5.5 bn worth of local sovereign sukuk in its third issuance under the country’s first-ever local sukuk offering, according to official data. The three-year, EGP 4 bn ijara issuance — a leasing-based Islamic security — attracted an order book of EGP 8.2 bn from 28 bidders. The auction is one of three planned for December, with a combined value of EGP 14 bn.

REMEMBER- The strong demand follows the second sukuk issuance in mid-November, which drew bids worth nearly 11x the offering size, prompting the ministry to expand its December issuance schedule. The sukuk program aims to raise a total of EGP 200 bn by June 2026.

🌍 AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

Five hours of talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US negotiators failed to produce a breakthrough on a Ukraine peace agreement, a Kremlin aide announced on Wednesday. Russian foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as “very useful, constructive, and highly substantive,” but said a compromise was not reached. Geopolitical analysts suggest Russia has little incentive to rush negotiations, believing that Putin wants to prolong diplomatic engagement while continuing to bomb Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and make incremental battlefield gains. (CNBC | CNN | NYT)

CLOSER TO HOME- A new investigation by CNN found evidence of Israeli military bulldozers mishandling bodies of Palestinians killed near the Zikim crossing. Satellite imagery now confirms what Palestinians have been reporting for years — Israel is dumping the bodies of civilians killed while seeking aid into shallow unmarked graves, which could violate international law, according to legal experts. (CNN)

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally requested a presidential pardon from President Isaac Herzog in his ongoing corruption trial, citing the “public interest” in ending the case. In his letter to the president, Netanyahu said the trial has become a source of “deep public division” and that ending it would help restore national unity. The move marks a reversal for Netanyahu, who has long denied the charges and vowed to prove his innocence. Herzog confirmed receiving the request and said it would be reviewed carefully. MEANWHILE- Privacy concerns are on the rise in India after smartphone manufacturers were ordered to pre-load phones with a state-run cybersecurity app. The decision gives smartphone makers some 90 days to ensure the app, Sanchar Saathi, is installed. The app’s privacy policy dictates that it would have access to phone logs, text logs, media, and cameras. Apple has reportedly opposed the decision, and does not intend to preload the app on iPhones, Reuters reports, citing three sources with knowledge of the matter. (Reuters | Financial Times | BBC | Reuters)

AND- Over 1.2k people have been reported dead following flooding and landslides across South and Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. Some one mn people have been left homeless in Indonesia following the landslides, and are currently living in temporary shelters. (Guardian | CNN | BBC | ABC News)

AND IN BUSINESS NEWS- HSBC has appointed Brendan Nelson as chairman, making his interim role permanent seven months after launching a search to replace former chair Mark Tucker. The decision came just a day after CEO Georges Elhedery said Nelson was not seeking the position permanently. Nelson joined the bank’s board in September 2023 and has been serving as interim chair since October. He will continue to chair the Group Audit Committee until HSBC releases its 2025 results in February, after which a successor will be announced. (Reuters | Wall Street Journal | Financial Times)

ALSO- OpenAI has acquired a stake in Thrive Holdings, a private equity firm set up by top OpenAI backer Thrive Capital, in a new agreement that deepens the AI company’s ties with its investors and partners. The arrangement gives OpenAI a “meaningful” share in Thrive Holdings — which acquires and modernizes service firms like accounting and IT providers using AI. We’re all homebodies at heart — whether you choose to admit it or not — which is why a wholesome homey gift never disappoints. Whether someone’s a true home hermit or just a home decor enthusiast, here are a few quick and gratifying gift ideas.

#1- ON A BUDGET: One thing a homebody needs is a favorite mug — and maybe some over elaborate tableware. Winter is (tentatively) here, which calls for a new mug to put to use for morning coffees and a lot of hot cocoa, and a handmade mug from Ellie Home could do the trick. If you’re looking for a more sizable present, you can opt for their earthenware sets. If your giftee happens to be a coffee addict, a bag of specialty coffee roast would be a great addition to a thoughtful mug. Popular and loved specialty coffee roasters like Brown Nose, Dancing Goat, and Breadfast offer a variety of blends and flavors.

PRICE: From EGP 185 to EGP 2k.

#2- SWEET SPOT: Aromas and fragrances are a home’s signature touch. If your fellow homebody isn’t tapped into the world of scents yet, this is your chance to let them in. Palosanto offers incense sticks, natural candles, herb smudge sticks, and even kits and gift baskets. A good smell needs clean, fresh air, and Xiaomi’s Smart Air Purifier is the perfect gift for that, and a sure way to guarantee a complete olfactory experience of pleasure.

PRICE: Palosanto’s products range from EGP 200 to EGP 4k. Xiaomi’s Air Purifier goes for 21k.

#3- ALL-IN: A furnishing freshening up — It’s easy to get tired of your surroundings. A small addition to a space — a new stylish floor lamp, a whimsical pillow, an artistically patterned rug, or some fun wall art — can make a big difference. A rug from INCA & Co would make the perfect gift for someone wanting to cozy up their living space. Their rugs are a standout, coming tufted, kilim, and hand-knotted, but their out-of-the-box, chic lamps would also be perfect lighting remodels. Some funk home accessories from Whisper the Brand could also spruce their space up.

PRICE: From EGP 750 to EGP 23k.

At the Movies

A franchise that lost its magic

🎥 Want to see a magic trick? Nine years following its second installment, the Now You See Me franchise is back on the big screen with its highly-anticipated third film: Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, we’re once more introduced to The Four Horsemen of the magical apocalypse. This time though, they’re welcoming three new young magicians into their ranks.

So, what’s the trick? Charlie (Justice Smith), June (Ariana Greenblatt), and Bosco (Dominic Sessa), are three average teenagers with not-so-average aspirations. To them, The Four Horsemen are heroes, idols, and muses. Taking a page out of their book, the three teenagers stage magic shows, rob rich people, and redistribute their riches in a Robin Hood-esque manner. After the curtain falls on one of their shows, the trio returns home to find J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) waiting for them.

The Eye — the ancient society of skilled magicians — has a task for them. Atlas, Jack (Dave Franco), Merritt (Woody Harrelson), and Henley (Isla Fisher) — whose absence was notable in the second installment — join forces with the newcomers to confront Veronica Vanderburg (Rosamund Pike), one of the richest and most powerful women in the diamond trade.

We saw through this particular magic trick. Despite an entertaining premise and a somewhat cohesive plot, we felt as though the franchise had lost its spark. The cast looked exhausted, and performances — Harrelson’s and Eisenberg's in particular — were underwhelming. While we did enjoy the appearance of nearly every single star in the franchise, including Morgan Freeman and Mark Ruffalo, we still couldn’t help but feel that the film had lost its mojo.

Out with the old, in with the new? Perhaps the inclusion of the three young magicians sets forth a new era for the franchise, which gives us hope for its future. Despite its shortcomings — and our reservations — we wouldn’t say that the film was bad. Now You See Me: Now You Don’t remains an entertaining watch for those among us with a penchant for magical heists (and financial equity).

WHERE TO WATCH- You can catch the film at Vox Cinemas at City Center Almaza, Mall of Egypt, and Mall of Alexandria. The film is also screening at City Stars Cinema, D5 and CFCM’s Scene Cinema, Cima Arkan, and P90 Cinema. Watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:24).

Revisiting Classics: Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre

📚 Scores of literary works have risen (and fallen) through the ranks of the most pivotal reads. But few have managed to deftly remain relevant for centuries, and one such novel is Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 gothic masterpiece, Jane Eyre. The novel was initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell — many women of that time took to publishing under male pseudonyms to overcome societal prejudices that limited their professional and intellectual credibility. A year later, for its third edition, Jane Eyre was republished under its rightful author’s name, but only after the novel had amassed great success.

The novel — one of the first to be narrated in first person — unfolds through the eyes of the young titular character as she reaches adulthood, and with it, its troubles. The novel begins with Jane living with her uncle’s family — abusive, prejudiced, and ostracizing. As time passes and conditions worsen, an apothecary suggests to the family that Jane be sent off to school, a decision convenient for both the abuser and the abused, as it offered Jane an escape. Yet conditions at the school were not any better, and Jane’s miserable life carried on as it was.

After several years at school, as both student and later teacher, Jane decides to take matters into her own hands, seeking life as a governess — a path that would eventually lead her to Thornfield Hall and her employer-turned-lover Edward Rochester. All goes well until Jane begins to uncover some dangerous secrets. Jane’s innermost thoughts continue to remain relevant today for women throughout the world. She writes of a desire for freedom, critiques gender-biased social structures, and champions autonomy. Despite some products of the time, it remains one of the earliest feminist works in literature.

Some 178 years since Jane Eyre saw the light of day, it remains a celebrated literary work. As far as classics are concerned, this one is an easy read, perfect for those who have been looking to lose yourself in a classic.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can grab a paperback copy from Diwan, The Anglo-EgyptianBookshop, and Al Masriah Al Lubnaniah. You can read the e-book at no charge on the InternetArchive.

Hot and Fresh Out of the Kitchen

Egyptian grills by the Nile — what more could you ask for?

🍴 There are many pleasures to be experienced in life. Seaside dining is one, and – if you’re lucky enough to be born in Om El Donia — Egyptian grills are another. El Mohamady, the Mansoura-born oriental grill heavyweight that has earned the love and patronage of West Cairenes and East Cairenes alike, offers a brand new experience that doubles down on its signature hospitality.

Situated smack on the Nile corniche, El Mohamady’s Maadi branch comes with a stunning view of the water. You can choose outdoor dining by the corniche, or indoors — where you’ll still enjoy the view through the floor to ceiling windows. Clad in dark hues accented by dim lighting, Maadi’s El Mohamady may have disguised itself as a fine-dining destination, but it’s just the right place to roll up your sleeves, get comfortable, and dive into your dish.

El Mohamady’s menu still boasts its iconic signatures. Our afternoon at El Mohamady Maadi saw us ordering fattoush, molokhia, kobeba, mombar, stuffed vine leaves, and an assortment of cold dips — tommeya, baba ghanoug, and morta. For the main event, we went for a large grill mix and a Turkish grill mix, with a pair of mint lemonades on the side to ease us through the feast.

Here’s the thing about El Mohamady — and something we should have seen coming: It’s very easy to over-order. The Nile-side eatery’s portions are quite generous, and we found ourselves biting off more than we could chew (though in the moment, we couldn’t have been happier). The appetizers all hit the nail right on the head, with the kobeba and the fattoush in particular standing out. If we were to get critical, we’d say the stuffed vine leaves could be skipped, though they weren’t without their merits either.

Do in life what you will, just don’t miss out on El Mohamady’s Turkish grill mix. The regular grill mix was a hit, with the meat tender and the khalta rice flavorsome but light. But it was the Turkish grill mix that undoubtedly proved itself the main of the evening. With just the right amount of spice, the meats, alongside the mixed-nut rice, the fresh tomato sauce, and spiced vegetables, made for a deeply fulfilling meal — one we could not keep away from, despite having filled our stomachs to the brim.

PRO TIP: We’d recommend making a reservation by calling 19964, as it tends to get very crowded. The Maadi branch is also equipped with two private dining rooms perfect for large groups.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You’ll find El Mohammady’s newly-inaugurated branch on the NileCorniche in Maadi.

Saddle up, we’ve got a business war to fight

👂 A war of a different sort: Business Wars (Horoub El A‘maal) narrates the intense competitions between major corporations. The podcast’s episodes are neatly organized into seasons, each usually dedicated to a single story, and have 15 seasons under their belt. This Arabic-language podcast is an adaptation of an English podcast of the same name, brought to life by Al Jazeera Network and Wondery.

Business Wars covers fierce commercial conflicts throughout the business world. Topics are presented in a documentary-esque format, with a voiceover narrator providing a detailed account of the history of the conflicts at hand, which are then critically and objectively analyzed, drawing lessons and insights from the successes and failures of the corporations under the spotlights.

The brand war that changed an entire industry: The podcast’s most prominent season examines the long-lasting battle between Coca Cola and Pepsi. One of the most famous brand wars in history, it takes listeners all the way back to the late 1800s and the launch of the promotional campaigns that had some serious global repercussions — and at times, triggered waves of public scrutiny. The hosts discuss how competition between two soda brands soon turned into a symbolic battle over American identity and cultural presence, doing an incredible job at dissecting market dynamics, brand power, and marketing warfare.
