THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Trump picks his team for term two

Good morning folks, and happy Friday. We hope you enjoy the autumnal weather as we settle into the weekend.

LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

PRIVATIZATION-

United Bank IPO could raise up to EGP 5.1 bn: Central Bank of Egypt-owned United Bank has set an indicative price range of EGP 12.70-15.60 per share for its upcoming IPO on the EGX, potentially raising between EGP 4.2-5.1 bn. This values the bank at up to EGP 17.2 bn. The final offer price will be determined through the bookbuilding process.

AND- 95% of the shares offered in the IPO (313.5 mn shares) will be allocated to institutional investors, while 5% (16.5 mn shares) will be allocated to retail investors.

ECONOMY-

Inflation continues inching up: Annual headline urban inflation rose 0.1 percentage point to 26.5% in October, extending its upward trajectory for a third consecutive month. The increase follows a modest 0.2 percentage point rise in September to 26.4%.

Inflation is yet to feel the pinch from rising fuel and education costs: While the mid-October fuel price hike of up to 17% and rising education costs were expected to weigh heavily on October’s inflation reading, their impact has largely been deferred. Education-related expenses will be reflected in February’s 2025 data — coinciding with second semester school fees — while the fuel basket adjustments do not appear to reflect the recent mid-October fuel price hikes.

LEGISLATION-

The “old rent” law could soon be revamped: The Supreme Constitutional Court ruled onSaturday the fixed rent for residential properties stipulated in the so-called “old rent” law as unconstitutional and called on lawmakers to amend the first two articles of the law before the legislative season comes to a close. The court argued that the fixed annual rent cap set at 7% of the land and building’s value at the time of licensing showed the law’s failure to take into account inflation is unfair and denies landlords rights afforded to them under the constitution.

The parliament’s housing committee had already prepared a preliminary report on the “old rent” laws, and it is scheduled to be presented at the upcoming general sessions, the House of Representatives said.

ENERGY-

#1- Another 5.2 GW worth of renewables are in the works: UAE’s Alcazar Energy and a consortium of Taqa Arabia and France’s Voltalia could establish a total of 5.2 GW worth of renewable energy projects in the country after inking two separate build-own-operate MoUs with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) on Thursday, according to a cabinet statement. Under the terms of the agreements, Alcazar Energy will initiate studies for a 2 GW wind power project, while the Taqa Arabia-Voltalia consortium will conduct studies for a hybrid project that produces 1.1 GW of wind energy and 2.1 GW of solar energy. The news comes as the government works to raise the share of renewables in its energy mix to 42% by 2030.

#2- Oil Ministry kicks off USD 530 mn sustainable aviation fuel project: The Oil Ministry launched the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Company, which will invest USD 530 mn to develop production facilities and integrate the facility with other petroleum companies in Alexandria governorate. The project aims to produce 120k tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and reduce carbon emissions by 400k tons a year, after production kicks off within the next few years.

#3- Qatar Energy acquires a 23% stake in North El Dabaa Block from Chevron: Qatar Energy inked an agreement with US oil and gas giant Chevron to acquire a 23% operational stake in the Mediterranean’s North El Dabaa Block. Chevron — the operator of the concession — will retain a 40% share, while oil and gas developer Woodside and the Egyptian state-owned Tharwa Petroleum hold 27% and 10% stakes, respectively. The company did not disclose the value of the transaction.

The company is already gearing up for new exploration works: “We look forward to the drilling of the first exploration well on this block,” the company’s CEO and Qatari Energy Minister Saad Sherida Al Kaabi said.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-

#1- Africa’s top auto aftermarket and feeder industries exhibition is coming to town: Cairo will host Autotech 2024, “the premier hub that brings together the biggest industry professionals in the automotive aftermarket and feeding industries,” on 17-19 November and welcome over 9k attendees and over 300 exhibiting companies. The event is also being billed as a chance to network with others in the sector, hold B2B meetings, and see leading figures in the industry speak. Check out the conference’s agenda and find the link to register on the event’s official website.

#2- It’s interest rate week: The Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee will meet on Thursday to review rates. The bank left interest rates unchanged during its last meeting in October, citing upside risks to the nation’s inflationary trajectory and stable economic growth.

Check out our full calendar on the web for a comprehensive listing of upcoming news events, national holidays and news triggers.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

The international news cycle was broadly led by US president-elect Donald Trump, who made several key appointments for his cabinet ahead of his second stint at the White House in January. The rundown:

  • Kristi Noem — Homeland Security;
  • Pete Hegseth — Department of Defense;
  • John Ratcliffe — CIA;
  • Mike Waltz — National Security Advisor;
  • Susie Wiles — Chief of Staff;
  • Elise Stefanik — US ambassador to the UN.

AND- Elon Musk and Roivant Sciences founder Vivek Ramaswamy are leading what Trump is calling the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk’s appointment comes after the Tesla CEO endorsed Trump’s presidency bid and ran a lottery pool for voters to encourage turnout.

Meanwhile, talks for an Israeli ceasefire in Lebanon are “making progress,” despite Qatar recently saying that separate talks for a ceasefire in Palestine have stalled. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has pointed to Russia as a potential part of enforcing the ceasefire in Lebanon by mitigating the flow of weapons to Hezbollah through Syria.

The BTC rallied to a record high of USD 93k on Thursday, with the crypto industry seeing Trump’s election — including him securing all seven swing states — as a positive outcome that will see digital currencies facing less hostile policy.

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

Cozy up for winter

Winter is setting in, but that’s no excuse not to escape the daily grind and cozy up somewhere (not too far) away from home. Instead of ending up where everyone else is, you may want to consider these boutique-style lodges and secluded villas that feel worlds away from the city buzz. Feel the need to chase the sun? You might want to dabble a little south of our hemisphere.

GO LOCAL-

#1- WATERSIDE LOFT: This cozy loft is the perfect escape for two, with its own private pool, serene garden, and a crackling indoor fireplace for winter nights.

LOCATION: Just a 100 km away from Cairo, you’ll find this lodge in Fayoum.

PRICES: The price varies depending on whether you book through their Instagram page or Airbnb profile. If you were to book through their Instagram page, prices start from USD 198 for day uses or one night, USD 168 for two nights or more, reaching up to USD 144 per night if you were to book for a week — and a 20% off to boot. The price listed on Airbnb starts from EGP 10.2k per night.

ACTIVITIES: You can go stargazing, try out your hand at pottery in the charming Tunis Village, check out desert camping, sandboard on the desert dunes, and more.

#2- LAC MOERIS GLAMP: Glamping (glamorous camping) is booming across the MENA region, and unlike the typical crowded camps, the Lac Moeris Glamp atmosphere is serene, with only the soft sounds of lake and the occasional calls of diverse birdlife filling the air.

LOCATION: Lac Moeris Glamp is located by Lake Qarun in Fayoum.

PRICES:Weekday rates start from EGP 3k for a single room and go up to EGP 4.5k for a triple room — each of their five lodging options have either a direct or partial lake view, so either way you’re waking and sleeping to a serene body of water. Weekends see prices on all rooms rise by EGP 500, with a minimum stay of two nights required.

ACTIVITIES: The place offers peace and quiet for those who want to decompress from the bustling noise of the city. Activities you can take up to fill the days are pottery workshops using the camp’s own wheel and kiln, horseback riding through the natural landscape, or unwinding on private lake cruises.

#3- SHAMOFS ORGANIC FARM: If you’re craving a serene farm-like escape, Shamofs offers a peaceful retreat among lush palm trees.

LOCATION: The farm is located in Siwa.

PRICES:With six unique rooms — some single, some double — and shared bathrooms, prices settle around EGP 2-2.5k depending on the dates. You can either book with them through their Instagram page — which will deduct online fees — or through Airbnb.

ACTIVITIES: Relax by the indoor fireplace in a cozy greenhouse or take a dip in the natural swimming pool, surrounded by tranquil garden views. Outdoor seating areas invite you to savor the quiet, while the fully equipped, communal kitchen is there for any home-cooked meals you want to whip up. If you want to tackle a stroll and pick up some handicrafts, Siwa’s main market is 15 mins away.

#4- MATARMA BEACH RESIDENCE: Matarma offers a quieter, more mindful retreat, where simplicity complements the landscape and invites relaxation. Plus, if you have a dog, they’re welcome to join in on the getaway, adding to the resort’s charm and sense of home.

LOCATION: The beach residence sits at the end of Ras Sedr.

PRICES:Mid-week rates start from EGP 2.9k for a single superior studio and go up to EGP 11.5k for a quadruple deluxe bungalow — offering five lodging options tailored for solo travelers or families. Weekend stays will incur an additional EGP 300 per room, per night — for more info, check their price list for the rest of the year.

ACTIVITIES: You’ll have no need to leave the residence — they provide a range of activities from yoga sessions to art workshops and even open air film screenings under the stars. If you happen to find some free time amidst the activities, take a trip to The Pharaohs Bath or Moses Springs where it’s said that its sulfur water springs treat many diseases — there are other spots to visit too for the history buffs.

#5- HOUSEBOAT 65: This floating home is closest to home, with its charming 1920s wooden architecture, you’ll wake up to views of the Nile greeting you.

LOCATION: In the heart of Cairo, moored on the waters of Zamalek.

PRICES:Whether you’re here for a short stay or looking for a day escape, it offers both multiple and day use options to unwind. However, the prices are on the hefty side — it’s best to split it with a group. The day-use option will set you back from USD 194 up to USD 338 for two people depending on the room you pick — and an extra USD 40 per extra person. You will have to shell out up to EGP 25.5k per night for their 2BR apartment room.

HOP ON A PLANE AND GO INTERNATIONAL-

#2- RAS AL KHAIMAH: Looking for the perfect place to soak up some vitamin D during the winter? Whether you’re after a luxury spa retreat or adrenaline-inducing adventures in nature, UAE’s northern gem is a year-round destination. Naturally, a UAE visa is required for entry.

#3- SALALAH: This Oman city is known for its lush landscapes and unique microclimate. Our winter is when the city truly shines with mild temperatures and clear skies. The perfect time for beach strolls along Mughsayl Beach, exploring the historic Al Baleed Archaeological Park, or trekking the scenic Dhofar mountains without the sweltering heat. Again, an Oman visa is needed for entry.

At the Movies

A timeless tale of love and friendship

? A friendship that blossoms into romance is truly the magic of love in El Hawa Sultan. Director and writer Heba Yousry has captivated the audience with her latest film, a touching romantic drama that’s become a box office success and garnered praise from industry insiders in the less than two weeks since its opening. It takes us back to that warm, nostalgic ambiance familiar to fans of Yousry’s popular series Sabe’ Gar.

The story: Sara (Menna Shalaby) is a young woman with a simple job at a school, where she dreams of a peaceful life away from her past and her strained relationship with her father. Her best friend is Ali (Ahmed Dawood), also her childhood neighbor and confidant, who shares her easygoing nature, sense of humor, and love for Bahaa Sultan. Their friendship gradually transforms into a romance that they don't initially acknowledge — until circumstances in both of their lives push them to reconsider.

Realistic and relatable romantic films have a unique charm these days, especially as action-packed blockbusters dominate the big screen. This film’s heartfelt narrative and familiarity brings our quotidian emotional lives into focus: love, disappointment, and jealousy — feelings we’ve all experienced in one way or another.

The story’s pacing was just right, pairing well with elements of the film like its scenic shots of Heliopolis and the songs that are synced throughout the story. At over two hours long, the film’s length might be one downside, but we found it worthwhile from start to finish.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the film at VOX Cinemas City Centre Almaza, Mall of Egypt, Alexandria, City Stars, Point 90, Zamalek, Cairo Festival City, Cima Arkan, and Zawya Cinemas. Or you can catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:47).

The 2024 Booker Prize winner

? This year’s Booker Prize winner is a poetic exploration of Earth and humanity. Samantha Harvey’s Orbital is a meditation on the human experience, set against the backdrop of space. This slim novel follows a single day on the International Space Station, where six astronauts have to orbit the Earth sixteen times. It details their thoughts and reflections, intertwining them with descriptions of the stunning imagery of our planet from above.

Harvey’s style is both lyrical and precise, capturing the awe and wonder of space exploration while ruminating on profound questions of existence. The astronauts experience love, loss, and are struck with the unbelievable fragility of our home planet. Their conversations are both mundane and philosophical, and offer a glimpse into the human condition stripped of earthly distractions, and amplified by the endlessness of the cosmos.

While some readers may find the pacing slow, or the focus on introspection a bit too meditative, Orbital’s beauty lies in its ability to evoke a sense of tranquility and contemplation in the face of existential horror. Harvey’s masterful use of language transports the reader into the (sometimes claustrophobic) confines of the ISS, offering a thought-provoking perspective on our world and our place within it.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find Orbital, as well other nominated novels that made it into the Booker Prize shortlist in Diwan.

Hot and Fresh Out of the Kitchen

A meal with an unbeatable view

Khufu’s Bistro blends luxurious interiors with an unbeatable view of the Pyramids of Giza. The restaurant is surrounded by glass walls that provide an uninterrupted gaze of our ancient heritage — though guests who prefer an open-air experience can enjoy the same iconic view on the restaurant’s outdoor balcony.

The food has its highs and lows. The charcoal chicken is a definite highlight — grilled to tender perfection and served with sriracha mayo and cilantro on skewers. This dish feels both flavorful and refined, with spices that enhance rather than overpower the chicken. It’s easy to eat, but seemed more like a starter than a main dish, given the portion size and lack of side dishes.

Unfortunately, the ravioli didn’t live up to expectations. Stuffed with beef brisket and served with beef jus and roumi cheese foam, it was disappointingly salty and overwhelmingly spiced, which overshadowed the individual flavors. With only four or five pieces, the portion size was also underwhelming.

While the presentation and ambiance are top-tier, diners may leave feeling like the meal didn’t entirely justify the cost. Khufu's is undoubtedly a must-visit for the atmosphere and iconic view, but the food didn't quite hit the mark.
