🗞️ LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

ECONOMY-

#1- Inflation rose after four-month deceleration: Annual headline urban inflation rose by 0.8 percentage points in October to end the month at 12.5%, largely on the back of higher fuel and food and beverage prices, according to data from state statistics agency Capmas seen by EnterpriseAM. October’s reading marks the end of a four-month streak of easing price inflation.

#2- A mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to touch down in Cairo in the second half of the month to discuss — and hopefully greenlight — the combined fifth and sixth reviews of our USD 8 bn Extended Fund Facility program, an informed source told EnterpriseAM. The visit follows improvements in key economic indicators the fund had been looking for progress on.

TOURISM-

The grand opening momentum continued for the second week, peaking last Friday and Saturday when attendance surpassed the maximum capacity. The momentum carried over to the Giza Pyramids, which hit another record high last Friday with more than 35k tickets sold. Daily visitors to the museum currently average between 17k and 20k.

DON’T MISS our special series Unveiling the GEM, where we tell the story of the museum from its earliest conception to its grand realization.

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

Your guide to staying active in the winter

As we await the slow arrival of winter in Egypt, it’s hard not to give into the season’s biggest guilty pleasure: lazy days spent cozying up for warmth. While the cold can be hard to bear and the shorter days make our couches and beds all the more inviting, all it takes is a small nudge to get yourself up and moving in the chilly season — a season that comes as fast as it goes. This is your guide to help you ditch that couch and spend your winter more energetically.

MAKE THE MOST OUT OF EGYPT’S SUN (DAY TRIPS & OUTINGS)-

The sun is your best friend in winter, not just for its much-needed warmth, but for its power to increase serotonin levels, a natural remedy for those of us who struggle with seasonal depression and low motivation in the darker months. Psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal, who first identified the condition seasonal affective disorder (SAD), says daylight exposure is key to beating its symptoms. And what better way to do so than to bask in the glorious Egyptian sun?

#1- Skip the gym, take your workout outside: For the frequent gym-goers, switch up your routine by taking your workout outside — instead of heading to the stuffy enclosures of an indoor gym, get your workout done in fresh air, either at the nearest park or sporting club, or even from the comfort of a sunny balcony at home. Look for local group workout or yoga sessions to encourage you.

If you’re a runner, opt for the block around your house or the nearest park or outdoor running track. Studies show that running and walking outside makes for a better energy release, improves mental health, and strengthens your muscles. If you get your active hours in while the sun’s still out, you’ll feel much better about staying in when it’s gone early.

#2- Take a tour through Cairo’s historical gems: Cairo is a rich, lively city, and for many of us, its historical areas remain unexplored. If you’ve been looking to do some sightseeing, but the intense summer heat has made you reconsider, a sunny, mildly chilly morning offers the perfect weather to do so.

While the Pyramids and museums rightfully draw mns of visitors each year, the true heart of Cairo beats in its less visited corners. You can wander through the vibrant alleys of Khan El Khalili and Moez Street, or visit Darb 1718 and Cinema Radio while getting your daily steps in.

Don’t know the best spots to explore? Check out our guide to Cairo, or join one of Qahrawya’s famous walking tours across the many historical and cultural sites of our capital city.

#3- Shop at winter bazaars: Racks of fuzzy sweaters, winter coats, and scarves — an undeniably warm and cozy sight on a chilly morning. For those of us who thrive on a little retail therapy, the season brings no shortage of bazaars, especially around Christmas time. Head to a local bazaar on a free weekend like the upcoming winter Cairo Flea Market, KMT house’s Garage Sale, Bazarna’s Winter market, or even Arkan’s Famer’s Market and splurge on some cozy treasures or just take in the vibes and the pleasure of being out in the sun with friends.

#4- Plan a day of fun rides: While theme parks are often associated with summer fun, who says we can’t enjoy an adrenaline rush during the winter? Going on a few exhilarating rides is a sure way to warm yourself up and have some offbeat winter fun.

STAYING ACTIVE INDOORS-

While braving the weather and spending time outdoors is great for us all, some activities are simply better enjoyed indoors. Afterall, winter wouldn’t be winter without a little cozy downtime. There are some indoor pastimes that can keep you active and lift your mood without taking too much of your energy.

#1- Ski Egypt: Our winter can seem a little dull in comparison to other countries without an elegant blanket of snow. The closest we can get to this is the popular Ski Egypt. The indoor ski resort features a 22k-square-meter snow park and an indoor ski slope, for which they offer skiing and snowboarding lessons. The “icy utopia” is a perfect simulation of a textbook winter moment and a more budget-friendly way to hit the slopes.

#2- Get crafty: Not in the mood for sports but still want to feel productive? Artsy workshops are the way to go. Nothing screams winter more than slowing down and getting creative with your hands. El Ashry Studios and Darb 15 are two hotspots that offer unique hands-on workshops across a variety of crafts. If you’re into painting, BrushIt hosts group painting sessions for a fun and laidback escape with brush and canvas. Feeling a bit too lazy to commute? You can always get crafty at home with the help of a few online tutorials and makeshift supplies.

#3- Get your inspiration at local art galleries: For the more passive art lovers among us, there’s always the leisure of walking through an art gallery. Put on your most aesthetic outfit and head to one of Cairo’s abundant art galleries. When the season brings cloudy skies, less sun, and shorter days, engaging in the colorful and vivid world of art is the perfect way to restore your creative spark.

#4- Stay warm with a dose of arcade nostalgia: Arcades are where you and your friends and/or family can get your adrenaline kick without having to deal with cold weather. It’s a fun way to spend time with your friends in a digital play world instead of doing it on your couch alone. Boom Room, Magic Galaxy, Ground Control, Xtreme Land, and Cosmo City are some of the many arcade spots you and your loved ones can enjoy together.

EMBRACE THE SEASON: CULTURAL EVENTS-

The winter season might bring a chill to the air, but it also brings joyful festivities and an unmistakable magical spirit. Every time winter comes around, Cairo fills up with events that capture its quiet charm and feel all the more warm against the chill.

#1- Classical warmth at the Cairo Opera House: A quintessential winter affair is a classic one — and it doesn’t get more classic than The Cairo Opera House. If you’re a lover of grandeur paired with the sound of strings, spending an evening watching one of the historic venue’s famous ballet shows or orchestral performance is perfect for you. It’s also a fun excuse to put on your fanciest winter outfit and escape from the day-to-day mundanity.

#2- Keep your energy up with a live show: If the extravagant atmosphere is not your cup of tea, catching live shows by local bands and artists is another relaxing way to spend a chilly evening. You can stay on the lookout for Cairo Jazz Club’s new year and Christmas specials, as well as seasonal shows at Room Art Space and El Sawy CultureWheel.

FOR YOUR HOME THEATRE

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein dissects humanity

🍿 Who is the true monster in this story? That is the question Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 adaptation of Mary Shelley’s gothic classic Frankenstein asks and answers. Del Toro’s Frankenstein offers a fresh, new take on the timeless tale of the fanatical surgeon and his monstrous creation.

This is a story on what it means to be human — It is no horror, but a tragedy. While the film itself relishes in all things gore, with several sequences — particularly ones pertaining to human dissection — proving a little difficult to watch, it is a surprisingly emotional melodrama, supplemented by award-worthy performances from Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as his monster, and Mia Goth, whose role as Elizabeth is redefined in the adaptation.

The cold north is unforgiving, and so is Frankenstein’s monster. The film begins with a royal Danish ship on a wild goose chase for the North Pole when they find a dying Victor… and a colossal humanoid creature on a murderous rampage to get him. When the monster is temporarily stopped in his tracks, Victor begins confessing his sins — and the story of the monster’s creation — to the ship’s captain (Lars Mikkelsen), before the monster finds his way back to him again. It is then that the audience is let in on Victor’s backstory — his abusive father, his obsession with medicine, and his life-long goal to become godlike.

We witness Victor’s spiral into lunacy, the heart-breaking creation of his monster, and Victor’s subsequent attempt to destroy him. As the monster once more finds his way onto the ship, the film then shifts into the monster’s story, offering a perspective hitherto unexplored by most adaptations. Having lost all hope in this shallow half-life, he hunts down Victor, of whom he makes a singular demand, and is once again failed by his creator.

The film’s grim, cold mood, alongside stellar cinematography, make for an experience that is sure to leave its mark on one’s mind. Having received a limited run in select theatres in October, the film was released globally on Netflix earlier this month — a move we initially found mind-boggling, but soon made sense as we came to the realization that this was a film meant to be watched in solitude, lights dimmed, and snacks held close to one’s chest.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can stream Frankenstein on Netflix. Watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:23).

Your genocide is too inconvenient for me

📚 On 25 October, 2023, only weeks following the events of 7 October which would see over 69k — documented — Palestinians murdered by the Israeli occupation forces in what has since been finally deemed an abhorrent genocide, Canadian-Egyptian novelist and journalist Omar El Akkad, who famously penned American War and What Strange Paradise, took to X, writing: “One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.”

In February 2025, El Akkad would publish a non-fiction book under this very title, shortened to One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This. Across 200-pages, neatly divided into 10 chapters, each dissecting a sociopolitical aspect of the genocide and how it has been presented to the masses, El Akkad poignantly delivers an analytical masterpiece, bubbling with personal ache and generational scars.

Yet, this is not a book on just Gaza. While the ongoing genocide is indeed the most prominent catalyst of the book, with El Akkad going to great lengths to chronicle its atrocities and the ensuing nonchalance exhibited by the world’s populace, the book is, at its core, a chronicle of a people not allowed to be human — immigrants, Palestinians, residents of the global south. It is because of this dehumanization, El Akkad argues, encouraged by journalists’ words and world leaders’ speeches, that the world may feel excused to turn a blind eye until it’s safe to look.

Throughout the book’s length, El Akkad archives stories told time and again — of immigrants randomly selected for secondary screenings, of a father reassuring his children that the police officer wishes him no harm, of a people destined only with departures, and never with returns. El Akkad bares his past on paper, writing of a childhood spent between borders and countries, his father’s struggles as a first generation Egyptian immigrant, and the negative space in which the lives of those not fortunate enough to be born into privilege exist.

This is a book that transcends description. With the rigor of a journalist, the storytelling of a novelist, and the soul of a man with nothing to lose, El Akkad pieces together an important, timely, and riveting read. It is a political dissection of the ongoing war on humanity, and also one man’s letter of defeat — his realization that the west, which he had for so long glorified, is but a mere sham.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find a physical copy of One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This at Diwan. You can also find the eBook on Amazon.

Hot and Fresh Out of the Kitchen

The old and the new find their balance at Mazeej Balad

🍴 Where do you go in Cairo when you crave authenticity, to gaze upon a skyline that has, for years, remained unchanged? Maadi, Zamalek, Garden City — all destinations that fit the bill, but what if the experience you’re craving is one that is a little more over the top (quite literally)? We’d urge you to make the trip to the Mazeej Balad Rooftop. The crowning jewel of a newly-minted Michelin Key luxury boutique hotel thrives on the balance between history and modernity.

The rooftop, clad in an amalgamation of trinkets and eccentricities tying several centuries, cultures, and design languages together, is a microcosm of 20th century Cairo, offering a 360-degree view of its heart. With an eccentric spatial design featuring mosaics, intricate water features, gothic-style chandeliers, and myriad other elements drawn from scores of different eras, the rooftop proves the perfect palate cleanser, the first appetizer of many to come.

In the spirit of honoring that balance, Mazeej Balad’s menu presents familiar Egyptian classics, envisioned through a global culinary lens that seeks to accentuate, rather than replace. The rooftop offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as light snacks to be enjoyed by the bar.

We treated ourselves to a day-long experience, starting off with Mazeej’s signature oriental tray, a filling, flavorsome start, comprising customizable eggs, ful, falafel, fried eggplants, a tomato cheese dip, a fresh salad, and halawa. To end the meal on a sweet note, we had the orange blossom and pistachio pancakes, an odd-yet-oddly-complementary explosion of flavor, topped with sweet orange purèe, caramelised pistachio, and Mastika ice cream

We were advised to try the truffle cheese tomato dip, and heeded the call. Incredibly aromatic and unlike any dip of the truffle variety we had tried before, Mazeej’s signature side proved a stroke of genius. Were you to visit soon, this is the one dish we’d insist you try.

For lunch, we ended up ordering the koshari arancini (essentially fried bites of the Egyptian national dish), beef kobeiba, and a lamb shank with vermicelli. The arancini surprisingly held themselves together, and packed a flavorsome punch. The kobeiba was well-seasoned, and the portion was just right with five large pieces.

It was the lamb shank that ultimately stole the show, proving that there are fewer pleasures in life than watching slow-cooked lamb fall off the bone. The meat was tender and earthy, and the bed of vermicelli on which it was laid was soft with butter and spice.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You’ll find Mazeej Balad at 11 Mahmoud Bassiouny, Downtown Cairo. The rooftop is open daily from 10am to 1am. Reservations can be made through this link.

WHAT TO LISTEN TO

Wanted dead or alive

👂 Real Outlaws is a Noiser production that follows the footsteps of history’s most notorious criminals, from Billy the Kid to the Kray twins and Bonnie and Clyde. The podcast explores whether these figures were charismatic antiheroes or bloodthirsty villains (or maybe a bit of both), examining the true stories behind the myths by consulting leading experts and traveling back to a time when rogues and bandits followed a code of their own.

Put ‘em up: The podcast dedicates three episodes to Billy the Kid, hosted by Danny Marshall and featuring insights from historian Michael Wallis, author of Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride, and traces his journey from his early days surviving the slums of New York, to becoming a legend in the American West.

From a kid to The Kid. The first episode focuses on how justice and fortune proved to be fickle forces in the unforgiving saloons and dust bowl towns of New Mexico. The second shifts to Lincoln County, where Billy finds temporary peace before being caught up in a bloody turf war that forces him to choose sides, showing how the line between outlaw and lawful citizen blurred in the Wild West. The final installment follows Billy’s heated gunfights and desperate jailbreaks as his legend grows and law enforcement closes in.

The series pulls all the stops you’d expect from a Noiser podcast, making full use of the company’s signature production quality and historical expertise. While the show’s quality is indisputable, some listeners may find the narrator’s delivery over-the-top at some points, especially when handling different accents. But the podcast excels at humanizing Billy while maintaining historical grounding, examining how circumstances and systemic injustice shaped an outlaw rather than simply celebrating or condemning him.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Real Outlaws is available on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Storytel | Deezer.
