LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

ECONOMY-

Gov’t readies new social protection package: The Madbouly government’s new social protection package that Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly teased at last week’s presser will contain increases in the minimum wage, tax thresholds, social protection coverage, and pensions, two government sources told EnterpriseAM. The package is expected to be approved by March or after receiving directives from the presidency, our sources said. The minimum wage hike has not yet been decided on, with our sources anticipating the government to raise the minimum wage by EGP 1k to EGP 7k, with adjustments for other income brackets. The Finance Ministry is looking into raising the personal income tax exemption threshold to EGP 65k — up from EGP 60k previously — while keeping other income brackets unchanged, our sources said.

INVESTMENT-

#1- Organi Group is eyeing USD 1 bn in automotive and tourism investments over the next five years, CEO Essam Organi said on Wednesday, with the big-ticket investment figure to be split evenly between the two sectors. The tourism sector’s allotted USD 500 mn will go towards adding 20k rooms to the group’s hotel portfolio, which currently stands at 4k rooms across 11 hotels in Egypt.

Organi’s comments came during the inauguration Auto Mobility’s new USD 100 mnassemblyplant for Chinese automaker Geely-branded vehicles, which was attended by much of the cabinet economic team.

#2- Spain’s Konecta announced USD 100 mn worth of Egypt expansion plans: Madrid-based business process outsourcing (BPO) firm Konecta announced this week that it would set up a regional HQ and invest USD 100 mn in Egypt over the coming three years under an MoU inked with the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA).

M&A-

#1- Arla Foods’ deadline for submitting a purchase offer for Domty was extended by 60working days starting 9 January, after the Financial Regulatory Authority greenlit Arla’s request. Denmark-based Arla said last October that it wants to acquire up to 100% of local cheesemaker Domty’s shares for an estimated EGP 8.9 bn, with plans to delist the company from the EGX post-acquisition.

#2- Raseedi acquired Kashat: Fintech startup Raseediacquired nano-credit outfit Kashat — as well as its subsidiary, nano-financial services provider Pharos Microfinance — for an undisclosed sum, in what the firm described as “an equity deal to broaden its product offerings and introduce instant loans” to its portfolio.

LEGISLATION-

#1- The House greenlit the government’s cash-based subsidy law: The House of Representatives gave the final sign-off to a government-drafted law that directs cash-5 based subsidies to citizens who fall below the poverty line and lack access to social ins. initiatives. The law stipulates forming the Takaful and Karama fund to distribute these payments.

MPs also approved a government-drafted bill to delay the tax on agricultural land by a year, effective 31 July 2024. The postponement aims to ease financial pressures on farmers and boost production.

#2- GAFI to draft a new Companies Act in line with changing investment climate: The General Authority for Investment and Freezones (GAFI) announced that it plans to prepare a revamped companies law to replace the Companies Act as part of efforts to keep up with developments in the investment arena and to provide a legislative framework that aligns with the increasing reliance on electronic documents. The authority is expected to put the draft legislation up for public consultation after Ramadan.

DEBT-

MAFI secured USD 180 mn for its agri-food industrial complex in Sadat City. The agro-industrial firm will receive USD 108 mn in long-term financing from a syndicate of local banks led by state-owned Banque Misr and including Suez Canal Bank and Al Baraka Bank, and USD 72 mn bridged by equity investments from regional investors. Beltone Investment Banking is MAFI’s sole financial advisor and lead financial coordinator for the agreement.

MOVES-

Hazem Helal (LinkedIn) was appointed CEO of O West, Makadi Heights, and Byoum by Orascom Development, the company announced in a statement on Wednesday. Helal steps into the role after serving as vice chairman of Al Ahly Sports Facilities Company, where he led the development of a new stadium and sports city.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

The biggest news by far this week was the long-awaited and much-welcome announcement that a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel had been reached. After 15 months of a brutal war and tens of thousands of Palestinians killed by Israel’s brutal assault on the enclave, Israel and Hamas agreed to an Egyptian, Qatari, and US mediated ceasefire on Wednesday, with the agreement set to come into effect on Sunday, 19 January.

According to the plan, the ceasefire will begin with a six-week first phase that will include a gradual Israeli troop withdrawal from central Gaza, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to northern areas. Hamas will release hostages over the course of the phase, with at least three released each week and all living hostages freed before the return of remains. Next, the two parties will move on to the yet-to-be-finalized second and third phases of the agreement, which will focus on securing a permanent truce and full Israeli withdrawal in the second phase and facilitating Gaza’s reconstruction in the third phase.

However, questions about whether the ceasefire would actually take effect began to crop up Thursday, as Israeli strikes continued to pound Gaza into the afternoon. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who has long played the role of spoiler in ceasefire negotiations, began the day claiming that Hamas had gone back on several key tenets of the agreement, with the PM threatening to put off convening Israel’s cabinet until Hamas had “accepted all elements of the agreement.”. Netenyahu’s office later announced that the cabinet will meet today to give final approval to the ceasefire and hostages release agreement. Netanyahu remains under pressure from two of his coalition parties to scuttle the agreement, with several lawmakers threatening to resign if the ceasefire goes through.

Elsewhere in the world, South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested by security forces after over a month of tense political uncertainty in the nation following Yoon’s brief declaration of martial law in early December. US president Joe Biden, meanwhile, bid farewell to the White House in an Oval Office speech Wednesday, where he warned of an emerging tech-industrial complex that has brought an “avalanche of misinformation and disinformation, enabling the abuse of power.”

At the Movies

Saving Rambo

📽 Oh Rambo, what have you done to us? In his debut, writer and director Khaled Mansour really outdid himself. Finding an Exit for Mr. Rambo — referred to simply as Rambo — is his first ever feature film, and it was quite captivating.

Good dog: Hassan (Essam Omar) is a calm, hardworking, security guard who lives in a working-class neighborhood with his mother Altaf (Samaa Ibrahem), and his dog Rambo. Their simple life becomes complicated after a dispute erupts over their house and their neighbor, Karem (Ahmed Bahaa from Sharmoofers) tries to push them to vacate their home to expand his workshop. The events escalate and Karem starts a fight with Hassan, which results in Rambo attacking him to protect his owner.

This is where Hassan’s journey to find a safe place for Rambo away from Karem’s potential retaliation begins. This becomes a journey of self-discovery where he meets his ex-partner Asmaa (Rakeen Saad) — who is now engaged to another man — and his uncle Fathi (Hassan El Adl) — who reminds him of his absent father — reinforcing a recurring feeling of everything being stolen from him.

What makes this film brilliant is its attention to detail. Although the story is dark and depicts an oppressed protagonist, there are also glimmers of positivity that the director captures using the performances. The use of colors, imagery, music, and locations fit perfectly with the characters’ emotional state. There are also some political, social and philosophical easter eggs for the viewers to notice, punctuated by a Mohamed Mounir song about generations and their share of defeats.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can find the movie at VOX Cinemas at City Center Almaza and Mall of Egypt, Cima Arkan, Cairo Festival City, Citystars cinemas, Zawya, and Point90. You can also watch on YouTube (runtime: 1:48)

Keanu Reeves’ latest project grapples with immortality

📚 From Hollywood charisma to penning stories, Keanu Reeves can do it all. His latest project, The Book of Elsewhere — written alongside author China Miéville — offers another welcome addition to the celebrated actor’s oeuvre. This novel pairs the action-driven roots of Reeves’ BRZKR comic series with Miéville’s distinctive storytelling — generating an engaging narrative that mixes existential dread with a search for meaning.

At the heart of the plot is Unute, a man who has been alive for 80k years. Born from lightning and prayers, Unute saw civilizations rise and fall, dying multiple times only to be reborn again. While he’s been both loved as a god and feared as a demon, Unute himself doesn’t buy into either designation. Fast forward to the 21st century, and he’s stuck working for the US Army Special Forces, who see his violent episodes as a tactical advantage.

The story kicks into gear with a series of strange moments: The brief reanimation of a soldier, the appearance of an immortal Indonesian deer-pig, and the rise of a mysterious self-help group. As Unute and his military handlers investigate these bizarre events, the lines between ally and enemy blur, leaving him to wrestle with his immortality.

The book leans into familiar tropes but is itself a rare hybrid: Blending ancient warriors, ultraviolence, and moral ambiguity, the novel offers those who want a deep exploration of immortality and meaning a welcome treat.

You can find it at Cherry Blossom Books.

Hot and Fresh Out of the Kitchen

Spice, zest, and all things Thai

🍴 If you’re craving authentic Thai flavors, you’re in for a treat at Tom Yam. This spot in Heliopolis pays homage to Thailand’s vibrant cuisine, offering a menu that showcases the bold, balanced flavors that define the country’s culinary tradition — from the zesty kick of lemongrass to the comforting heat of chili peppers.

We kicked off our meal with the Tom Yum soup. Even though Cairo’s sweltering summer heat might make you second-guess ordering a soup, the Tom Yum here is worth every spoonful. We had it with shrimp, and it was the perfect blend of sour, spicy, and savory, with a subtle tang of lemongrass and a spicy kick. It wasn’t overpowering — just enough to warm our bellies and leave us reaching for more.

If you’re a fan of fried goodness, you’ll love the fried shrimp cakes. These little guys were a crispy delight, with a perfect golden crust and a tender, flavorful filling.

The dim sum shrimp came next, and they were just as impressive. The dumplings were plump and generously filled with tender shrimp, wrapped in a delicate, slightly chewy dough. The dipping sauce provided a great balance, adding a hint of saltiness that enhanced the natural sweetness of the shrimp.

But the star of the evening was the Pad Thai. This classic dish was executed flawlessly – the noodles were perfectly chewy, and the shrimp were cooked just right. Tossed in a umami-rich sauce with a hint of sweetness, it was everything you’d want in a Pad Thai.

We were just scratching the surface of the menu; Tom Yam also offers a variety of sushi, stir-fries, fried rice, and more Thai specialties that are worth exploring.

They do deliver, but only to New Cairo and areas around Heliopolis. You can call their number on their Instagram page to order or reach them through Talabat.

PASS THE CONTROLLER

A Severance-esque corporate nightmare in 1986

🎮 Time to clock in. Things Too Ugly is an atmospheric narrative puzzle game set in 1986, placing you in the role of a Risk Assessment Data Processor at the mysterious TEREBRO INC. As a night shift worker armed with period-appropriate technology, your task is to dig through corporate archives while uncovering what appears to be an increasingly unsettling company history. The perfect lead-up to the second season of Severance, don’t you think?

The core gameplay revolves around document analysis and puzzle-solving, featuring a variety of challenges that include mathematical problems, logic puzzles, and language-based mysteries. Players can interact with their environment primarily through an antiquated computer terminal and a radio system used to communicate with their supervisor. The inclusion of tools like GPS and an encoder device suggests that the players will need to employ multiple vintage technologies to piece together a full narrative.

While not explicitly marketed as a horror game, Things Too Ugly seems designed to create a growing sense of unease as players delve deeper into TEREBRO’s archives, enhanced by fully voiced characters and what promises to be a branching narrative where player choices may ultimately determine the fate of the company’s reputation. We don’t want to jump the shark, but so far, it seems to be a promising title for players who enjoy investigative gameplay, narrative-driven experiences, and puzzle-solving in an atmospheric retro-corporate setting.

A refreshing break from the chaos of traditional media

👂 Normal people, normal takes, real conversations. Hosted by Mary Katharine Ham and Karol Markowicz, two veterans of political commentary, this show focuses on issues that truly matter — giving you a refreshing break from the chaos of traditional media.
