THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Trump shocks world with proposal for US to ethnically cleanse, redevelop Gaza

Good morning all you wonderful people, and welcome to another chilly winter weekend.

Gone are the days when travel meant choosing between a handful of cookie-cutter hotel chains or taking your chances with random vacation rentals. Today’s savvy travelers are discovering that where you stay can be more than a place to rest your head. This week’s guide will introduce you to a new world of accommodation options that cater to your specific interests and travel style, transforming your travels from standardized experiences into bespoke stays.

LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

ECONOMY-

#1- Egypt’s non-oil private activity expanded at its highest rate in over four years in January, buoyed by a solid increase in output and sales volumes, according to S&P Global’s latest Purchasing Managers’ Index report. The headline reading rose to 50.7 from 48.1 in December, marking the second time the country's non-oil activity has hit the expansion territory since November 2020.

#2- Net foreign reserves inched up to USD 47.3 bn at the end of January 2025, marking a USD 156 mn increase from December, according to data from the Central Bank of Egypt. Net foreign reserves continued to increase month-on-month for the 29th consecutive month.

BANKING-

Net foreign assets in Egypt’s banking sector dropped to USD 5.23 bn in December, down from USD 5.96 bn in November, marking a monthly decline of 12.2%. The decline was driven by a widening deficit in the net foreign assets of commercial banks, which widened to USD 6.4 bn in December, compared to USD 5.8 bn in November.

CAPITAL MARKETS-

#1- Officials considering alternatives to a capital gains tax on EGX transactions: It looks increasingly likely that the long-awaited capital gains tax on EGX transactions may never come, a government source told EnterpriseAM. In its place, officials are now considering reinstating a 0.15% stamp tax on all EGX transactions as a simpler alternative to the capital gains tax, which has continued to be unenforced due to the absence of executive regulations.

EDUCATION-

Egypt responds to Trump’s USAID funding freeze: The Egyptian government has stepped up to support USAID scholarship students following Trump’s foreign aid freeze last week.

HOSPITALITY-

The luxury Autograph Collection Hotel to take over Mogamma: Cairo House Egypt inkedan agreement with Tourism Investment and Marriott International to turn the Mogamma building into an Autograph Collection Hotel.

MANUFACTURING-

Elsewedy Electric launched the Middle East’s largest telecom cables factory: EGX-listed manufacturer Elsewedy Electric opened a EGP 2 bn cable factory at its subsidiary Elsewedy Industrial Development’s Industrial zone in the Tenth of Ramadan, a move which further cements the country’s efforts to localize its telecommunications components. The 70k sqm factory stands as the largest of its kind in the region.

PHARMA-

Eva Pharma to produce mRNA vaccines: Eva Pharma signed an MoU with France’s DNA Script and Belgian Quantoom Biosciences to secure the transfer of critical technology necessary to manufacture mRNA vaccine, making Egypt the first Arab or African country slated to produce mRNA vaccines.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-

#1- Inflation data incoming: Capmas and the Central Bank of Egypt are expected to publish inflation data for January early on Monday, 10 February.

#2- We’ll officially know the ins and outs of the new social protection package “within days,” Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said during his weekly presser on Wednesday.

#3- We should learn the fate of the planned capital gains tax on EGX transactions next week: The House is expected to introduce a draft law scrapping the capital gains tax on EGX transactions and reinstating a stamp tax, with deputy chairman of the House of Representatives’ budget committee Yasser Omar telling Al Mal on Tuesday that the draft law was expected “within days.”

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

Newly inaugurated US president Donald Trump did not take a break from penning executive orders this week, with the president kicking things off by ordering 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% tariffs on Chinese goods, sending financial markets into a tailspin. However, North American leaders managed to reach last-minute agreements with Trump, postponing tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days, pending negotiations. Meanwhile, China retaliated by imposing tariffs on select US-made items and calling for a probe into Google.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi also spoke over thephone with US President Donald Trump Saturday, during which the two discussed the “critical importance of advancing the implementation of the first and second phases of the ceasefire agreement,” according to an Ittihadiya statement.

But just when we thought we’d seen the week’s biggest development — Trump unveiled plans to ethnically cleanse and redevelop Gaza under possible US occupation. During a joint presser with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump proposed that the US take over, develop, and own the Gaza Strip as part of a broader plan to turn it into “the Riviera of the Middle East.” Trump’s statements initially indicated that the enclave's Palestinian residents were to be permanently displaced from the strip, though subsequent statements from US officials suggested that such displacement might be temporary. The proposal drew immediate condemnation from across the Arab region and from key international allies of the US, with Egypt, Jordan,Saudi Arabia, Germany, and France among the countries rejecting the proposal.

Despite the US administration’s slight backtracking, Israeli officials doubled down on Trump’s plan Thursday, with Israeli defense minister Israel Katz ordering occupation forces to prepare for what Israeli officials termed the “voluntary departure” of Gaza’s residents. This move drew quick condemnation, with the Egyptian foreign ministry saying that the Israeli statements “constitute a flagrant violation of international law and the rights of Palestinians” in a statement, adding that the Egyptian government “completely rejects any proposal that aims to liquidate the Palestinian cause by uprooting the Palestinian people or displacing them from their historical land, whether temporarily or permanently.”

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

The guide to better hotel bookings

Airbnb and Booking are the go-to giants in the accommodation world, but a new wave of smaller platforms offer a refreshing alternative.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But what if it is broken? In recent years, these default platforms have faced mounting criticism for their impact on housing markets and communities on a global scale. One of the primary concerns is how these platforms have inadvertently facilitated illegal subletting, with tenants renting out properties in violation of local regulations. This creates legal risks for all parties involved — meaning that lodgers may not really have any legitimate claims if anything were to befall them during a stay, which undermines trust in the sharing economy model.

Another significant issue is these platforms’ role in driving up local rental prices and contributing to housing shortages. As property owners realize that they can earn more from short-term tourists than long-term residents, many have converted traditional rental properties into full-time vacation rentals. This has particularly affected popular tourist destinations like Barcelona, Amsterdam, and New York, where entire neighborhoods have seen a dramatic reduction in available housing for local residents.

But you could also be getting the short end of the stick. Shady pricing and transparencypractices like hidden fees and dynamic pricing will surprise you at check out — whether on the site or at the property. You might also get a nasty shock at the listing, as guests frequently report discrepancies between photographs and reality, inaccurate amenity lists, or misleading location information. This has led to growing frustration among travelers who find themselves paying more than expected with less bang for their buck.

Enter the alternatives. Smaller websites are now offering carefully curated listings, from owner-run B&Bs to home swaps and rentals, and offering solutions to issues frequent travelers may be invested in.

At the Movies

David Fincher's ‘90s masterpiece

📽 Thirty years of the seven deadly sins: It’s officially been 30 years since the premier of the David Fincher’s Se7en, a film that left a significant mark on the ‘90s film industry with its star studded cast — including Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey — and its gripping storyline, which revolves around a serial killer who believes he can save society from its sins.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

The plot: William Somerset (Freeman) is a veteran police detective in a mysterious city filled with crime and corruption. During his last week of work — after making the choice to retire early — Somerset meets his replacement, young detective David Mills (Pitt), who moved from another state with his wife Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) to take on the new position. But before the veteran cop can retire, a gruesome crime occurs.

The victim is an obese man forced to keep eating until he dies — discovered in a room with the word "gluttony" written all over the walls. As strange crimes continue to unfold, the two detectives discover that they’re dealing with a serial killer named John Doe (Spacey), who targets victims representing the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and wrath.

This killer’s goal is to cleanse the dark city of its many sinners by leaving gruesome Dantean warnings to those that might commit a sin. Doe is determined to finish the job — regardless of how close the detectives get to catching him.

Years may have passed, but this movie still has the same impact it had the day it came out. The dark narrative and the captivating plot, which draws inspiration from Christian theology and Dante’s Divine Comedy, creates a unique cinematic experience — with an ending that leaves quite the mark on its viewers. The production company actually proposed a different ending that was rejected by Fincher and Pitt, who threatened to withdraw from the project if the ending was changed. This shocking finale, alongside strongly developed characters and a perfect soundtrack, make this film an absolute must-watch.

WHERE TO WATCH- Watch Se7en at VOX Cinemas in City Center Almaza, Mall of Egypt, or Alexandria, Premier IMAX Sheikh Zayed, Zawya, and Scene Cinema. You can also watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:58).

When vengeance calls, will the heart or mind respond?

📚 In the depths of rural Egypt, where traditions and customs weave their tight web around human destinies, echoes of oppression and injustice resound in The Curlew’s Call, one of the most prominent literary works by the dean of Arabic literature Taha Hussein. First published in 1934, the novel quickly became a staple on the literary scene, not only for its great storytelling but also for tackling social issues. Its impact was so long lasting that it was later revived in cinema through a film of the same name.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

The story: Amna lives with her older sister Hanadi and their mother Zahra in a small village. Forced to seek a fresh start following a family tragedy, they move to the city, where both girls take up domestic jobs for wealthy families — Hanadi for a young engineer of high status, and Amna for an officer’s family.

Innocent and naive, Hanadi falls for the engineer's manipulation — mistaking his words for love when in reality he is merely exploiting her. Succumbing to temptation, Hanadi is later killed by her own family in the name of honor. Amna later vows to seek revenge for her sister, and disguises herself to enter the engineer’s household as a servant. However, in the end it is not reason that has a final say, but her heart.

The book’s narrative blends tenderness and sorrow, where Hussein presents a tale of a rural girl forced into a journey of displacement — ultimately facing a harsh, unforgiving society. Amna does not willingly embark on a journey for justice in a world where men hold dominance over women’s fates — but is rather forced into it. The novel explores how justice is not only about revenge, revealing the internal struggle between the heart and the mind, between forgiveness and retribution.

WHERE TO FIND IT- The English version can be found at Bibliothek and Diwan. The Arabic version is available at Al Shorouk, Diwan, Neel wa Furat, and Al Masriah AlLubnaniah. A free digital version is also available on the Hindawi Foundation website.

Hot and Fresh Out of the Kitchen

Italian cuisine with an American twist

🍴 Jimmy’s Pizzeria brings Italian tradition and American flavors together. At Jimmy's, you get the best of both worlds — a slice of Italy with a dash of American flamboyance. Whether you're craving genuine Italian flavors or wanting to try bold combinations, Jimmy’s Pizzeria serves you an experience that bridges the best of both worlds at its locations at Zayed Promenade, El Malahy, District 5 and Lake District Mivida.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

What we tried: While Jimmy’s offers modern favorites like BBQ chicken and chicken ranch, we stuck to the classic authentic Italian options — particularly the Tonno Verde (though we opted for a Rojo) and the Napoletana. The Tonno Rojo was topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, tuna, olives, jalapeños, and oregano, while the Napoletana featured the salty flavors of anchovies and capers, with mozzarella to finish things off.

The Napoletana was hands down the better of the two, with traditional flavors that hit all the right notes on our palate. The crust had that perfect balance of chewy and crispy, and the tomato sauce was rich and tangy, just like it should be. The anchovies brought the salty depth, while the mozzarella added a nice creamy finish. It was simple, but exactly what you want from a pizza — straightforward, bold, and packed with flavor. Want an extra kick? Ask for some chilli flakes sprinkled on top.

The Tonno Rojo was decent, but it felt like it was missing something. The tuna and onions were good, and the crust held up fine, but it could’ve used a little extra something — maybe some chili flakes or a drizzle of chili oil to add some heat. Overall, it was solid, but didn’t quite stand out like the Napoletana did.

But if you’re not all about pizza, Jimmy’s American influence shines through their appetizers. Think chicken wings, strips, coleslaw, and even mozzarella donuts — a cheesy concoction we think is worth trying. And If you’re going for full-on Italian vibes, the cheesy garlic bread is a must.

PASS THE CONTROLLER

Embrace evil

🎮 Are you sick of being the hero? The Dark Queen of Mortholme is a brilliantly subversive take on the Soulslike genre that asks what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a hero’s endless resurrections. As the titular Dark Queen, you’re not just powerful, you’re almost comically overpowered, with multiple forms — yes, you get to flex the dreaded final boss second form — and disproportionate HP. But these advantages set up the game’s most compelling psychological element.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

It’s lonely at the top. The genius of the game lies in how it transforms the familiar Soulslike loop into something more emotionally complex. Each time the AI-controlled hero — he’s no regular NPC — returns, they learn and adapt to your patterns, much like a real player would in games like Elden Ring or Dark Souls. The hero’s persistence creates a fascinating dynamic where you, the villain, begin to develop an unexpected emotional connection to your would-be destroyer.

The game communicates character development through subtle mechanical changes. The death animations evolve over time, from cruel to almost respectful, reflecting the Dark Queen’s changing relationship with her adversary. Meanwhile, the hero remains trapped in their cycle of death and improvement, unaware of the impact they have on their seemingly immortal opponent.

The combat system is more nuanced than you may realize at first. While you possess overwhelming power, the game introduces interesting tactical choices: do you reveal all your moves, knowing the AI will learn from them? Or do you hold back, limiting the hero’s ability to adapt, but potentially making your encounters less interesting? These decisions add a strategic depth to what could have been a simple power fantasy.

The short runs work particularly well in this context, creating tight narrative arcs that encourage multiple playthroughs to explore different relationship dynamics and endings. While there are occasional technical hiccups with hitbox registration, they rarely detract from the overall experience.

WHAT TO LISTEN TO

Your outfit is saying more than you thought

👂 Let your outfit do the talking. Articles of Interest takes a deep dive into how fashion shapes identity, with host Avery Trufelman departing from the assumption that whether we like it or not, we are all always speaking with our clothes.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

Trufelman unpacks the social, historical, and political significance of clothing, revealing how fashion can be used as a tool for self-expression and a reflection of cultural identity. She also looks at the legal regulations, societal expectations, and consumer trends around clothing to explain how fashion choices are often dictated by forces beyond personal taste.

Each episode sees Trufelman choose a familiar contemporary fashion trend that the listeners may never have given much thought and then relate it to historical events. Take the absence of pockets in women’s clothing — turns out, it’s caused by a long-standing gender divide. Hawaiian shirts? It’s a tale that revolves around colonialism. Every episode leaves the listener with a little reminder that our clothes have stories to tell.
