WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: SFE + B Investments launch a new pharma company in partnership with El Ezaby + Khazna and Benya Group plan USD 250 mn data center

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It may just be the knowledge that it’s the first full workweek in recent memory, but we’re finding it hard to believe that it’s only Monday, especially as the news cycle here at home picks up pace.

We’re only one week away from meeting with some of you at the Enterprise Exports and FDI Forum, taking place at the Four Seasons at the Nile Plaza on Monday, 15 May.

We’re proud to announce that our friend Abdallah Sallam, CEO, Madinet Masr, is joining us for the forum. Are you? Abdullah Sallam is going to be speaking on the new industries Egypt can leapfrog into and claim a global spot. He is joined on stage for that discussion by Mostafa Bedeir, CEO of Giza Seeds and Herbs, and Nadia El-Tawil, investment officer at Africinvest who will discuss what are the export-based businesses of the future that can be a magnet for FDI.

They’re not the only ones: Among the top execs, bankers, and development finance folks speaking at the conference are: Tarek Kamel, CEO of Nestle Egypt; Omar Elsahy, general manager of Amazon Egypt, Khaled Morsy, CEO of DB Schenker Egypt; Mark Wylie, CEO, Beyti; Shady William, managing director of IDG; Mohamed Talaat Khalifa, CEO of Concrete; Hossam Sallab, CEO and vice-chairman of Sallab Group and Royal Ceramica; Kareem Abou Ghaly, chairman and CEO of Pasta Regina; Tarek Hosny, head of investments and projects at Fertiglobe; Helmy Ghazi, deputy CEO of HSBC Egypt; Nada El Ahwal, CSO of Transmar; Hassan Massoud, associate director and head of private equity (Southern Mediterranean), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD); Hossam Abou Moussa, partner at APIS; Yassir Zouaoui, partner at McKinsey; and Mohamed El Gebely, Team Leader at USAID Trade.

Topics and live interviews will include:

  • Why exports and FDI are the way forward and what lessons have worked from around the world;
  • How to attract foreign partners and figure out what they are looking for;
  • What lessons can we draw from white goods, fertilizers, and garments exporters who have increased our exports;
  • What are the fundamentals to creating an export and / or FDI strategy;
  • What it takes to secure a place in a multinational’s supply chain.
  • How industrial clusters could expedite exports, FDI and possibly be an avenue for SME development;

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

The linguistics of being tired + Gen Z is all about the side hustles

“Fatigue” vs. “fatigability: The importance of language in understanding and treating patients with neurological conditions: There’s a difference between fatigue — defined as individuals’ subjective feeling of weariness or exhaustion — and “fatigability” — the objective decrease in a person’s performance over time, according to a study (pdf) published earlier this year in the Journal of Neuroscience. The study found that the subjective perception of fatigue, not the objective level of physical exertion, is correlated with motor skills: As perceived fatigue increases, motor skills actually improve, and vice versa.That is, participants who reported being more tired during the first test, performed better in the second one.

What does this mean? Mental and motor fatigue cannot be lumped together, chiefly because they are “managed” by different parts of the human brain — and they can often “compete for cerebellar resources,” the study, carried out by Johns Hopkins University researchers, shows. While the findings are limited, they offer insight into how the body regulates itself when tired: Better motor control when experiencing more fatigue could mean that the body is defending itself against potential harm or threats.

50 shades of tired and how to overcome them. Researchers say that when experiencing fatigue, it is recommended to avoid certain activities like learning new information and instead engaging in “pacing” strategies — or ways to conserve your energy — and simply taking a break.

The side hustle: Gen Z proves it’s not a lazy generation: Around 40% of Gen Z workers are taking on more than one job, as they look to increase their income streams and work on more passion projects, a survey by Kantar found. A combination of hybrid working, generational shifts, and an uncertain economy have the younger generation hungry for a more fulfilling career, according to the BBC.

It’s not just about money, though: While Gen Z employees are currently at the beginning of their professional careers — which means their career paths are far from set in stone, and their income levels are likely at the lower end of the spectrum — many young workers are taking on side jobs as a means of personal growth and skills development, the BBC notes. “Passion projects mean those at the beginning of their careers can explore and test interests and ideas beyond the dominant pathway of their career trajectory – they serve as a way for young people to find value,” a Carnegie Mellon University assistant teaching professor said.

The changing world of work is more accommodating: Work structures have seen several changes over the past few years, which include employers becoming increasingly accepting of their workers' side hustles and the benefits they bring — including employees acquiring experiences and deepening skills set to reinvest in their daily jobs.

? UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

The CompletePersepolis by Marjane Satrapi: A rebellious teenager tells the story of Iran’s upheaval and her experience as a young immigrant in the West. Divided into two parts and set between post-Islamic Revolution Iran and France, this funny graphic novel starts from Satrapi’s youth as a child of Marxist parents studying in a French private school in Tehran. Through the visually appealing medium, Satrapi gives us a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the citizens living in the Islamic country. From the marches that led to the overthrow of the Shah, the trickling loss of power to the Islamic regime, to the restrictions on private life that Iranian citizens continue to grapple with today. Look for her experience of the Iran-Iraq war, her uncle that eventually finds himself in the clutches of the regime, her efforts to smuggle Michael Jackson’s latest tape (remember those?) to her final act of rebellion at school that forces her parents to sent her to study in the West to protect her from arrest. The beauty of the novel is its juxtaposition of her life growing up as she tries to normalize her experience as a child alongside the political turmoil overturning her country, and eventually shows the obstacles she faced as an immigrant.
