Good afternoon, friends. Today is the day that we welcomed Act Financial to the EGX and we should be getting news any day now that the recently approved USD 820 mn tranche from the IMF has landed in state coffers. We’re nearing the end of an already busy week for local business, economic, finance news, but the week is not yet finished and the news cycle shows few signs of cooling.
THE BIG STORY TODAY
Gov’t eyes USD 4 bn worth of hydropower projects: The Electricity Ministry plans to carry out USD 4 bn worth of hydroelectric power projects in collaboration with the private sector as part of its plan to diversify the country’s sources of electricity and transition to renewable energy, Al Arabiya reports, citing unnamed sources at the ministry. The government will reportedly seek out global hydropower companies and financiers to implement the projects.
A 2.4k MW pumped storage hydropower project is part of the game plan: Efforts are underway to kick off a 2.4k MW pumped storage hydropower project in Egypt’s mountainous Ataka region. The government had reportedly inked an MoU with a Chinese company over three years ago to implement the same project before it was pushed back due to financial and technical difficulties.
SOUND SMART: Pumped storage hydropower acts as a giant battery to store energy for the grid. It works by using surplus electricity to pump water uphill into a reservoir in periods of low demand or high supply, which is then released downhill through turbines to generate electricity when demand rises or supply falls. This way of storing energy means that energy networks relying on solar and wind power can keep the lights on even when the wind drops or the sun goes down.
THE BIG STORY ABROAD
The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is on the front page of every news outlet around the world, with the world’s business press pushing the major business stories of the day to second place. Hamas’s political chief Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in an airstrike early on Wednesday morning in the Iranian capital Tehran, Hamas and Iran both said in statements that blamed Israel for the attack. The attack came hours after Israel said it had killed a senior Hezbollah commander in an airstrike on Beirut, raising fears of an escalation in regional hostilities. Iran vows to retaliate: Iran declared three days of national mourning, with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatening Israel with a call to “avenge [Haniyeh’s] blood.” In the meantime, Hamas said in a statement that Haniyeh’s death would “take the battle to new dimensions and have major repercussions.”

We got word that the IMF’s recently approved USD 820 mn tranche should arrive in the “coming days,” Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk said in a statement following the Fund concluding its third review of our USD 8 bn loan program that described the decision as a “vote of confidence” in the government’s economic policies.

Burnt out? Maybe it’s time to ask for a demotion. It’s no secret that climbing the ladder means more responsibility and harder work. The task of managing a team (or several) has only gotten more complicated over the years — a study cited by the Wall Street Journal claims that in the last seven years, the number of people being overseen by their managers has tripled.
Unboss yourself. On a cursory level, the bigger your team, the more power you’re perceived to have. But it comes at a price. The more people you manage, the less technical work you do. You stop working with your hands — metaphorically speaking — and instead delegate the work you once enjoyed. For some, this is a dealbreaker.
Why would anyone want to give it up? Another study cited by the WSJ found that 40% of those polled said that their mental health took a nosedive after being promoted to a managerial or any other leadership role. Jenny Blake, once a team lead at Google, found that her job as an individual contributor was more impactful and fulfilling than as a manager.
How do you do that without losing your influence (or salary)? Turns out that companies may already be primed to reduce the size of middle management, and welcome your request to shift roles to something less directorial. “[Broach] the transition conversation by laying out your unique strengths and how they can better serve the company in a new role,” said Blake, “Don’t dwell on your distaste for managing people.” The way to keep your paycheck unaffected is to “stay in a role that is directly tied to revenue. Become an industry expert.”
Elon Musk breaks his own company’s policies with deepfake of Kamala Harris posted to X. The original post depicting the vice president of the United States was uploaded on X and labeled “Kamala Harris Campaign Ad PARODY.” However, Musk removed the reference to it being a parody and posted the video with the comment “This is amazing” alongside a laughing emoji.
The deepfake was altered from Harris’ recent campaign video, and manipulated to include statements like her having “four years under the tutelage of the ultimate deep state puppet, a wonderful mentor, Joe Biden” and being “the ultimate diversity hire.”
When is a joke not a joke?X’s policies mention that satire isn’t considered a violation as long as it does not “cause significant confusion about the authenticity of the media.” The original text added to the post was an attempt around the violations, according to The Verge, but Musk’s removal of the disclaimer was in contravention of his social media platform’s rules.
Musk seems to be dodging accountability, leaving CEO Linda Yaccarino to deal with thefallout. Musk only piped up when California Governor Gavin Newsom called the video out for illegality, posting a sarcastic response, saying that “parody is legal in America,” citing a fictitious “renowned world authority.”
This isn’t the first AI-related issue that the US presidential elections has faced. There have also been Joe Biden robo calls used to persuade people against voting. It’s gotten to the point where election officials are being trained against AI threats “to protect democracy” and the integrity of the elections.

If you’re on the hunt for the ultimate burger experience,The Burger Guy in NasrCity will take you there. This burger lover’s haven has some of the most uncommon flavors and combinations you definitely won’t find anywhere else.
All your favorite comfort food is there, but it would be a waste not to go out of your comfort zone of Buffalo Chicken and regular American burgers. What stood out to us the most were the Korean Burger, Special Swiss Melt, and Hawaiian Burger.
The Korean Burger is a game-changer. Imagine crispy fried chicken topped with sweet pickles, creamy mayonnaise, spicy gochujang, and a refreshing Korean coleslaw. Each bite hits all three flavor profiles of sweet, spicy, and savory. A solid 10/10.
It ain’t easy bein’ cheesy. The Special Swiss Melt covers the basics of a burger with its crisp lettuce, sweet pickles, and creamy mayonnaise. An added layer of caramelized onions, mushrooms kick it to the next level, but the pièce de résistance is the trio of American, Swiss, and blue cheese on top, covered in their signature TBG sauce. Chef kiss.
Pineapple on pizza has been a point of contention for decades — How about pineapple on a burger? The Hawaiian Burger is for our adventurous peeps who are always looking for something a little bit different. The real star of the show is the combo of the molasses teriyaki and grilled pineapple, adding a sweet and savory twist that makes this burger surprisingly addictive.
And if burgers aren’t your thing, The Burger Guy has you covered with a selection of tacos and hot dogs.
What’s the sitch on delivery? Residents of Heliopolis, Nasr City, and New Cairo are the lucky ones for now. You can order through their number on their page.

💡 UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-
If The Great Gatsby was a murder mystery, you’d get The Bishop and the Butterfly.Michael Wolraich, author, journalist and biographer, recounts the true murder of the Broadway Butterfly, a case that not only captivated the public, but also sparked investigations exposing rampant corruption within New York City and state leadership. Set in 1923, Vivian Gordon, a stage mother, is mixed up in New York City’s corrupt legal system, framed on vague charges of ” vagrancy.”
Despite protests of innocence, she is sentenced to two and a half years in the New York State Reformatory for Women. Her murder in 1931, after threatening to expose corruption, sparked investigations that shook the foundations of the city’s political establishment. Even with the revelations unearthed by the investigations, justice remained elusive, with Gordon’s killers escaping punishment.
Enter former judge Seabury. Wolraich suggests that the eventual success of the investigations was not solely due to Samuel Seabury ‘s principled leadership but also the timing of the investigation. By 1931, public discontent over rising crime and poverty fueled demands for accountability, making Seabury’s integrity a beacon of hope during the Depression era.
