WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Could we see a Banque du Caire stake sale in 1H 2025?

Good afternoon all you wonderful people, and happy Wednesday. Read on for all the latest on the Banque du Caire stake sale, the world’s most valuable companies in 2024, and solid recs to kick off the new year.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

The long-awaited Banque du Caire stake sale could soon be kicking into gear: Banque Misr is preparing to appoint an advisor for the offering of its subsidiary Banque du Caire, with the decision to come in a matter of days, a senior banking source told EnterpriseAM. The advisor will determine the structure of the sale, including allocations for public and private placements, with the offering expected to occur in 1H 2025 — earlier than the 2H kickoff we’d heard about previously.

Emirates NBD is reportedly eyeing a stake: Emirates NBD is reportedly considering the acquisition of a controlling stake in BdC, with informed sources telling Al Mal that the bank is currently in the final stages of due diligence with the acquisition expected to go through in 1Q 2025. Our source noted that multiple offers from investors and banks are currently under consideration, but refused to name any of the interested parties as all discussions remain in the early stages.

The sale has been a long time coming: Plans to list Banque du Caire have been floated — and repeatedly delayed — since 2018, with adverse market conditions often singled out as the culprit. Despite the stop-start nature of the privatization process, the government has continued to position BdC as a prime privatization target, with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly highlighting it last month as one of ten state-owned companies — alongside fellow banking sector stalwart Alexbank — as among those slated for stake sales in 2025.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The international headlines are a mixed bag today, with a number of stories vying for top billing. Wildfires in the Los Angeles area have forcedtens ofthousands to evacuate their homes in the affluent coastal neighborhood of Pacific Palisades and the Pasadena region in the latest fire-related disaster to afflict southern California. Over in South Korea, acting president Choi Sang-mok has encouraged security forces to pursue the arrest of impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol, who has barricaded himself within the presidential residence with the help of his personal security services. And closer to home, intensified Israeli strikes on Gaza killedat least22 today, as the US, Egypt, and Qatar continue last-ditch talks to secure a ceasefire prior to the inauguration of president-elect Donald Trump on 20 January.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

A deep dive into the most valuable brands of 2024

How did the world’s biggest brands fare in 2024? In a year marked by a tech-fueled stock market frenzy and geopolitical instability, global brands have spent much of 2024 recalibrating and adjusting to new realities. A new report by TradingPedia breaks down how the world’s largest brands fared during a tumultuous 2024, with important insights into what’s working — and what isn’t — in a shifting global economy.

Tech giants lead the pack: After a year of non-stop speculation over the time- and money-saving applications of AI, it’s not a surprise that tech companies top the list as the world’s most valuable brands. Apple has taken the top spot with an estimated valuation of USD 516.6 bn — a 73.6% increase from last year. This surge dethroned Amazon, which now ranks fourth with a value of USD 308.9 bn. Microsoft and Google have snagged the second and third spots with valuations of USD 340.4 bn and USD 333.4 bn respectively.

TikTok is the rising star, with the company’s USD 84.2 bn valuation — a USD 18.5 bn increase over 2023 — making it the most valuable Chinese brand on the list. TikTok isn’t the only Asian brand in the big leagues, though — Samsung is also a valuable contender, with a USD 99.4 bn valuation making it the world’s most valuable non-US brand.

Industry insights: Tech continues to lead as the world’s most valuable industry, accounting for 17.0% of the total value of the top 500 brands. Retail and banking follow with 11.8% shares apiece. Banking remains the largest sector by brand count, representing 14.2% of the top 500, with retail and tech following at 10.0% and 8.4% respectively.

Regionally, the US continues to reign supreme, boasting six of the top ten global brands — led by heavyweights like Apple, Microsoft, and Google. Chipmaker Nvidia dazzled with a 162.9% surge in value, marking it as the fastest-growing US brand. US brands make up over 50% of the top 500 and top 100 brands globally, the report notes.

Elsewhere around the globe, Germany’s Deutsche Telekom placed ninth in the rankings with a valuation of USD 73.3 bn, while China’s ICBC came in tenth at USD 71.8 bn. UK’s Shell shone as Britain’s most valuable brand, with a valuation of USD 50.3 bn.

Several big brands had a less fantastic 2024: Tesla and Walmart saw declines, with Tesla’s value dropping by 12.0% y-o-y and Walmart’s by 14.9% y-o-y.

The F in Facebook stands for free speech (and false information). Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced yesterday that changes to Facebook’s content moderation policies mean that the company will no longer be fact-checking information posted on the social media site.

The job of discerning facts from misinformation and AI slop now falls to Facebook users. Instead of a sophisticated program certified by international fact-checking networks, the site will now rely on user-generated community notes similar to those on X to flag false information. According to Zuckerberg, this is a bid to “restore free expression” in the face of external forces pushing the company to “censor more and more.”

Instagram and Threads will also be seeing these changes implemented, leaving bns of users reliant on others to moderate the accuracy of the information posted across several corners of the internet. This feature will debut in the US first in the coming months before being phased in worldwide over the course of the year.

What do experts have to say about it? “It’s going to hurt Meta’s users first,” says director of the International Fact-Checking Network Angie Drobnic Holan. “The [previous] program worked well at reducing the virality of hoax content and conspiracy theories [...] most people do not want to have to wade through a bunch of misinformation, fact checking everything for themselves.”

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A suspended detective gets in over his head

? A series that gets off on the wrong arm. Bad Monkey is a series adapted from Carl Hiaasen's novel set in the sunny Florida Keys. Creator Bill Lawrence’s talent for writing memorable characters and witty conversations shines in this quirky adaptation.

It starts with a strange incident that kicks off an odd chain of events: The story begins when a honeymooner fishing off the Florida Keys hooks a severed arm instead of a marlin. Enter Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a suspended police detective who’s trying to enjoy his time away from the force. Yancy is tasked with transporting the mysterious arm to Miami, where he crosses paths with medical examiner Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez). Sparks immediately fly — but not romantically.

As Yancy digs deeper into the arm’s origins, he quickly gets mixed up in a mess of personal and professional problems, including a missing persons case, an unhappy affair, and a series of shady deals. As he searches for answers, Yancy uncovers more secrets and ends up clashing with almost everyone around him.

There’s a lot to take in: Among the characters are Neville Stafford (Ronald Peet), a Bahamian fisherman trying to protect his land from a resort developer, and Bonnie Witt (Michelle Monaghan), the married woman Yancy is seeing who may or may not have ulterior motives. The show mixes dark humor and mystery well, with Captain Fitzgerald’s (Tom Nowicki) narration keeping the plot on track. While constant narration can be annoying, here it helps connect the different storylines without being too much.

Despite the slow pace the series is a fun ride full of quirky characters, strange plots, and dark comedy. The twists keep things unpredictable, but with Lawrence in charge, it stays funny and focused.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the series on Apple TV+ or watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:52).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

A taste of Oklahoma

? Get a taste of Oklahoma’s culinary roots. Nosh replicates the essence of Oklahoma’s flavors and uses them to elevate their burgers with every juicy bite. From the smashed beef patties to the crispy chicken topped with fresh ingredients, this is our idea of textbook comfort food.

Their tagline — quick bites, big delights — is quite accurate. The Bacon Bomb Burger was a stand out. Picture an Oklahoma-style smash burger with its crispy edges, topped with rich red cheddar, fresh lettuce, pickles, and crispy bacon. There’s also some chipotle mayo on there adding just the right touch of smokiness.

But don’t stop there. The chicken option that wowed us featured some hot garlic honey butter fried chicken — a perfect mix of sweet and savory — complemented by crunchy coleslaw, pickles, and a touch of sriracha mayo. It’s a bold combination, and it makes sense why they named it The Signature. This was one good sandwich.

Of course, no burger is complete without the right sidekick. Nosh offers crinkle fries that can be ordered just as they are or topped with chicken, burger, or truffle.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Find Nosh at West Mark in 6th of October. Delivery is available for Sheikh Zayed residents through Talabat.
